    This is the cleanest and easiest to follow TH-cam instructional I've seen in a long while. Is the practice and connector the same with 6A? In 10G applications (max run ~80 ft) does using 7 S/FTP have any advantage over 6A STP?

    • @LibertyAVSolutions
      @LibertyAVSolutions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Hello Al, thank you for the positive feedback. Yes, the procedure is the same, just much less shielding to work with. Cat7 used in RJ45 links does have advantages over Cat6A, especially reducing internal and external cross talk issues. As an example in HDBaseT - a foil shielded Cat6A (F/UTP) has about 14 bit errors per billion at 4K30 at the full 100m run. A Cat7 used in the same application is less than 1 bit error. This will apply in networking, there will be less cross talk and relational bit errors and less re-query for lost packets.

    It is perfectly explained. But I have a doubt.
    I do not have cooper tape and it is quite expensive for just making two terminations. I saw some videos that utilise the foil of one twisted pair. Would that be the best solution? I think that it should be bent by the half leaving the blue part hidden and wrapped around the strands. Or is it better not to twists the strands to cover more surface on the connection?
    Thank you in advanced.

    • @LibertyAVSolutions
      @LibertyAVSolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Jordi! Our method shown is a best-practices method, but there are other methods. If you review the instruction sheet, it also shows the wrapping of the drain wire around the jacket. With Cat7, you would use the braid shield instead, form a long enough drain wire out of braid shield strands (at least 20 strands to net the right wire size/copper cross-sectional area) and follow the instruction on the connector sheet at this link: www.occfiber.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Cat6A_Shielded_FTP_Instructions.pdf

    Great video, clear instruction. I read that on shielded cables with ground one should only ground one end of a patch cable, especially if a short run. Can you clarify? Your vid only showed one end of the build.

    • @LibertyAVSolutions
      @LibertyAVSolutions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Dan -
      In a properly grounded environment, both sides should have the shield attached to ground. However in some instances where a ground differential is known to exist, then the ground can be “Lifted” on the RX side. There are also cables available with non-contiguous shielding, basically offering shielded performance without connecting grounds on either side. These can also be utilized in situations where ground differentials exist. Ground differentials are common in the commercial environment because of multiple ground points required in large structures. Any sort of shielded copper extension (LAN, HDBaseT, USB) may run awry of ground issues when crossing these points.

      It all depends on the installation environment. Regarding drains, landing one end only provides RFI [radio frequency] protection, and landing both ends provides EMI [electromagnetic] protections. Generally, RFI protections seems to be the most useful. In those instances, do not land drain at end device - troublehooting takes longer the more you have to run around. What happens with one end open is the shielding acts as an antenna, diverting radio induced power to ground, reducing noise in the system.

    So is it the case that the foil around each wire pair is just trimmed off, and not connected to anything?
    Only a few strands of the outer braid are used as a drain wire?
    Just trying to figure out how each part of the shielding is supposed to be properly terminated.
    For most connectors, the copper tape over the end of the jacket would end up partly covered by the plug, and partly exposed?

    • @LibertyAVSolutions
      @LibertyAVSolutions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your question! Here is Ralph's answer:
      "The cable construction of both Cat7 and Cat8 is what we call S/FTP. That is an overall braid shield with each pair foil shielded. All foil shields are facing out and in contact with the braid and drain if the cable has one. In this construction there are no isolated shields, all share a common ground/return path.
      The existence of a drain wire in standard foil shielded cables is the tool to connect the ground path; in these cables, that braid shield functions as the tool to connect. The use of some strands to make a drain wire is a common practice, just ensure you have enough to generate a 26 AWG drain wire (about 20 or so strands).
      Copper tape is the avenue to ensure plug shield connection to the cable shield. The copper tape should be under the plug and it usually protrudes. That is OK. That particular connector does not have an external boot but you could use a small piece of shrink tubing if you wanted to dress it out and cover the copper. You could also use a ½ inch width copper tape to have a lesser exposed amount."

      Thank you for commenting! While there are some additional details to Cat7, you are correct, there are fiber terminations that make fiber terminations easier and faster than any RJ45 termination.

But it also have a drain wire inside the foil.....how would i terminate that kind of cable?.....Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me.

    • @LibertyAVSolutions
      @LibertyAVSolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is an SF/UTP cable similar to our LLINX-HD cable. If it has a drain wire you can trim off the outer braid and foil and then fold the drain over the jacket and apply the copper tape over the drain wire to complete the shield contact.

    could u show how to ground the wires?i have heard in cat 7 it should be grounded to reap the benfits of its shielding

    • @LibertyAVSolutions
      @LibertyAVSolutions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Kirby!
      While we don’t have a video for this just yet, we can give you an overview of what this would entail:
      When you put the connector on the cable correctly, the shield is automatically connected to the shell of the connector. You need to ensure you use shielded jacks in a properly bonded environment, meaning the patch panel is shielded and grounded. The shielding needs to have a drain point in the circuit, usually this is back at the rack.
      For direct equipment hookup, the shell of the connector receptacle is connected to chassis ground when plugged in. This is the drain point. If there is no drain point, static potential can build up and discharge, damaging equipment. Both sides do not need to be connected, the side closest to the signal origin is the connected side.
      Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
