    In Pearl, the prequel to X we jump back several decades following a much younger Pearl. She lives a lonely life tending to the farm and caring for her ill father, while dreaming of being a dancer on the big screen. Her dreams begin to take over her reality causing her temptations and repressions collide with dangerous results. We're breaking down the story, including everything we learn about Pearls character, how it connects to X, and explaining the ending.

Noticing things that I wasn't even thinking about like the property Pearl lives at, and how she never leaves there like she wanted to. I believe Howard actually stayed because he has now become a casualty of war. It does something to someone, and I believe the only thing Howard held on too, during the tour was his wife back at home. He held that optimism until he arrived home. While he was in shock...at first....he saw Pearl as nothing more than his wife
    ..who needed help. And help her he did.

    • @helovebarbee
      @helovebarbee ปีที่แล้ว +90

      How did he help her ?? As you can see in the next movie he too is sick. They are both serial killers who never got themselves help. Only continued to cover up the murders and add more. Pearl never changed, in fact, got worse.

    • @derronware9320
      @derronware9320 ปีที่แล้ว +160

      @Helovebarbee Correct! Howard has now been damaged and decided to "Help" his wife. It may not have been the correct approach, but he did help her nevertheless. Their relationship sort of reminds me of the TV Series Dexter. Dexter's father, Harry, though he was helping his son as well(giving him some self-righteous code for killing people) but Harry much like Howard, only enabled their loved ones because they could see past their sickness. Howard, I believe, was so far gone after the war that seeing his wife in that manner sent him into a protective state where he will do whatever it takes to keep him wife. Even the unthinkable.

That he can make this okay.
      Just... get rid of the bodies, hold his wife, and no one ever needs to know. He doesn't have context but he knows "she NEEDS him" and he made vows before God to be there for her forever. From there? Damning by a thousand little choices. Each sinking them both worse and worse into that madness. Like a slow rot over the process of decades.

    I always thought mitzy didn’t get the part and Pearl was just so deranged at that point that she projected what the judges said to her onto mitzy. I wonder if a "Howard" movie would work. You’ve never been on a farm, have you? Even that life is idealized here. Farms are brutal, and cruel. Animal cruelty abounds, farm laborers are paid almost nothing and treated like shit, and you are in the middle of nowhere, enduring brutal winters and scorching summers. Having land and a owned home is a dream…farm life is not, as someone who experienced it, I can say with authority, there is only a certain kind of cruel person that enjoys “farm life.” You wouldn’t believe how many farmers I know that are pedos or wife beaters. They use the farm to hide, and it works. Seriously, it’s strange how people idealize it, when in fact, it’s hell.
      Also should note, I’ve witnessed elder abuse too. 🤦‍♀️ I wish people didn’t look at farm life as something better, when it’s weirdly close to the hell in Pearl.

    After rewatching Pearl I think that each character’s death reflects how they made her feel:
    Her mother: destroyed every happy thought she had (literally with fire once), constantly knocked her down, deprived her of food. I think that’s why it took longer for her to die so that Pearl had a chance to do everything to her that had been done to Pearl.
    Her father: she felt smothered by taking care of him 24/7
    Projectionist: he broke her heart
    Mitsy: Pearl felt stabbed in the back over the audition
    This might be reaching 😂 but hey, it’s what we like to do here.

    I like this movie because it really demonstrates a very real fear, espcially nowadays. The fear of being unremarkable. The whole time Pearl is in her own head and has this image of herself, being a star. Her infatuation with being special really makes her lose touch with reality and its not until she is confronted with her true self, that is she ultimately is unremarkable, is when she breaks in sanity. Love this idea and i think touches base this fear that is so prominent in people today.

    To be honest, my interpretation (because tdt be more interesting and less predictable) was that Mitzy DIDN'T get the part, and was being honest there. But she saw that Pearl wasnt gonna let it go, and out of fear, just played into Pearls delusion like yeah ur so right sorry - anything to get out of there faster. I thought the same. Sadly, the writing is not so good after Pearl's monologue. Did Mitzy ignore distressed Peal and went to audition or did she got straight away to comfort her? The latter seems more likely given how empathetic she is. That would give her a perfect defensive response to Pearl's claims. After all, Pearl was too caught up in her own failure to pay atention what happened afterwards anyway. Then she trips. Why? I know she's dressed fancily but it was for dancing audition, shouldn't her shoes be more comfortable and safer than your average heels? That part was my only disappintment in the movie, I hoped Mitzy would put up more of a fight.

    FYI a “Dear John letter” isn’t a letter home from a soldier, it’s a break up letter and the “John” is usually the recipient. A snuff film, technically, is a film where a real death or murder is committed specifically to be filmed, rather than incidentally or in order to terrorize the audience. The part about God being generous to some but not to others, I also relate to. Lastly, the smiling at the end portraying her trying to mask her true feelings but not being able to keep up the facade any longer. I feel like this whole thing really takes parts from peoples experiences with mental illness, obviously excluding the theme of murdering other people. I would always fantasise about things to escape the horrible reality I was in as a child. I thought “if” I could do this or that then everything would change for me and my life would be perfect. Coming to the realisation that that would never happen and basically that I had been dealt a set of shit cards in life, lead me to having a breakdown. When she 1st sits down at the table before pearls monolog she goes to tell her she got the part but pearl cuts her off.
    2# The Projectionist is real.
    In movies when a character is a figment of imagination from the mind of another character they will always be in shot together, you will never see the "figment" separated from the person imagining them, showing a "figment" outside of the persons mind will never be done for the viewer, in the projectionists last scene as the croc is about to eat him pearl has already left, she is not there, so showing US the projectionist would be ONLY for the viewer, not the mind that is imagining it, ( It is a rule in movies regarding this ) example : Fight club, you will never see Brad pitt's "Tyler durden" alone, in his own scenes, his scenes are always with Edward Norton as he is the one who is imagining him.

Or even had that single film frame given to her to lose? Too many "real world" things that can't be explained if he were just a fantasy. The moral of the story is that not everything goes out the way you want it to be. Pearl thought that by being with Howard, she would leave the farm and live a wealthy life but instead Howard went to live with her much to her dismay. She never thought of the possibility that her plan would go sideways. It also goes further when she arrives to the audition packed and ready with a confident face that the judges would choose her but they didn't as they wanted someone younger and blonde which is something Pearl never considered thinking about. Pearl is a good definition of being a psychopath as she has a lot of outbursts and her plans being very fragile and short ended rather than long term and smart. Her actions are nothing more than a 10 year old throwing a tantrum on not getting what she wanted despite being a GROWN WOMAN. She is capable of love to an extent as in her confession, she never loved Howard and only loved the idea of him being "perfect, wealthy, and handsome" and she does love her parents to an extent but her Dad is very questionable as she felt more sadness of killing him than her mother. So to put it all together, the movie is a very dark twisted take on the Wizard of Oz and Pearl is not meant to be sympathetic and is dangerously insane as her ego is the size of Texas and the only person she ever loved and cared about is herself.

    • @phaggott
      @phaggott ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would disagree in so far as Pearl does seem afflicted but maybe not psycho, well psycho but maybe not psychopathic
      I think of that Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield movie, never let me go
      no need to get into spoilers but to me, when you see characters share in the camaraderie, feel, love, jealousy, hope, sham, pride (nomoho)
      It becomes hard to categorize them as unfeeling
      And I think it makes them more terrifying, like she says, she is missing *something* everyone else has but that something is not obvious
      You raised a few good points and maybe that's the thing, maybe she is missing many components
      -maybe- she is completely and irrevocably broken (spoiler alert)

    can we also talk about just how historically accurate this can be? woman really tried to live out their dreams during war time but had to take care of their families or work. some women felt so lonely waiting on their husbands and dealing with the pressure of keeping a household together that they went into psychosis. now i don’t really know if it drove people to murder, which i wouldn’t doubt, but im sure if some people weren’t mentally stable they might have. it kind gives a shutter island vibe but the X series is far more darker. also the scene of rejection “please ima star” heartbreaking.

    I think Pearl crushing the alligator egg signifies that Pearl isn't capable of being nurturing, and from the way she took care of her father, she is a danger to anyone she is given responsibility over, and will not hesitate to murder them if she feels they are becoming too much of a burden on her. She even admitted to "Howard" (actually Mitsy) that she was happy when she miscarried their child because she could not bear the idea of creating new life from herself and then being forced to care for that life given her murderous tendencies. This may explain why after six decades after Pearl takes place, she and Howard never had any children that we know of. Its likely that Pearl's carelessness, compounded by her fragile and unstable mental state made her an unfit mother, which turned out to be lethal for any children she and Howard may of had.

    At 4:36, a reference to "Dear John letters" is made, but incorrectly. A "Dear John" letter is typically from a soldier's wife or romantic partner, usually when deployed or at war, essentially dissolving the relationship. By calling these letters written while at war "Dear John letters", it sends the complete opposite message from what was intended. This really confused me, so I did a Google search to confirm my thoughts, and it seems at least Wikipedia agrees with me. Letters written during war are not the same thing as "Dear John" letters. Then again at 11:01 another incorrect term is used, this time "snuff film", which is a term used to refer to a film supposedly showing the homicide of somebody. The channel seems to confuse this with pornography, which again is NOT a snuff film. I have no idea why this one video's script is so sloppy when most others are tightly written and entertaining.

    • @AllfatherBlack

    • @daniell1483
      @daniell1483 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@AllfatherBlack That is what I said. "Snuff film" = filming a homicide. Pornography = adult film. He even goes on to later explicitly identify the blurred video as an "adult film", making it pretty clear that the video blurred out is pornographic in nature, which is NOT a snuff film. So yeah, not sure why, but the channel confused its terms more than once, which was extremely confusing to me and apparently others as well. It makes the whole video seem to be of inferior quality than the channel normally produces and could easily confuse anybody who speaks English as a second language or, hell, just regular English-speaking people. Words matter, and just blatantly using them incorrectly (seemingly intentionally so) bugs me.
