I'm from Australia and grew up with no exposure to baseball. I discovered that I enjoyed it when I was 18 and instantly became obsessed. I know it makes absolutely no sense but I feel a genuine nostalgia listening to old broadcasts like this, even though they were decades before I was born
I'm not embarrassed to say that every time I listen to or watch (on video) Mickey Mantle hit that dramatic HR in the bottom of the 9th inning I still get goosebumps. It doesn't get any better than that.

Story has it that Mantle had been watching Schultz' knuckleball from the dugout and told teammate Elston Howard, "we're going home in a minute"...and then BOOOM...The Mick called it beautifully
I was sitting in the bleachers on that chilly day drinking a hot chocolate with my dad when The Mick hit it in the upper deck. Broke the World Series home run record held by The Babe.
This HR by Mantle did NOTHING to affect the outcome of this World Series. Yankee fans constantly talk about it like it broke the back of the Cardinals or something. . .IT DIDN'T. . .The very next day Ken Boyer of the Cardinals blasted a Grand Slam that won Game 4 and was the real "turning point" of that Series. Tim McCarver belted a 3-run HR in Game 5 to win that one and the Cardinals went on to win the Series in Game 7 with Bob (World Series MVP) Gibson throwing a complete game victory on 2 DAYS rest. . .Mantle's HR had NO effect on that World Series. . .NONE!
@@BluesImprov are you a Cardinals fan? Couldn't tell. My favorite team was the '68 Tigers. Mickey Lolich shutting out his opponent for 8.2 innings in game 7, on 2 DAYS REST. Now that was a TURNING POINT. I just can't remember who the Tigers played.
It would be his 12Th World Series. His next one would come in 1976. Note-Sheppard announced the lineup one time then remained silent until a subsitution. He began announcing each batter at a time in 1967. "Number 1, Bobby Richardson. Second Base...Number 1," Then next time he came up... "The second baseman....Bobby Richardson."

I love both teams. Yankees were picked by the experts to win, but it is clear that by '64 the Yankees were a shell of their former selves. They were on borrowed time. St. Louis was the better team in this series. If Gibson had not entered the series on extremely short rest, the Cardinals might have taken fewer than seven games to wrap it up.
I considered the Yankees to be the better team. They out-homered the Redbirds 10-5 and blew another one as they did in 1960. If you are talking Ifs then the Yankees would have won if Whitey Ford did not hurt his arm in game 1 and Pedro Ramos, their best reliever in September, was allowed to pitch.
@@stevenmessner2014 We will agree to disagree. The Yankee Dynasty was on fumes by this time. It showed next season in 1965 and continued through the rest of the decade. The Cardinals appeared in two more series in the next four seasons.
Yes, the Cardinals did win the pennant in 67 & 68 but with a totally different infield than in 64. No Bill White, no Dick Groat and no Ken Boyer in 67 & 68. But they did have that pitching, Bob Gibson, et.al.
@@stevenmessner2014 Reading the book October 1964 by David Halberstam made me realize this was true. I wonder what happened to Ford's arm since he still pitched well seasons after. I really recommend this book to baseball fans. Bob Gibson was amazing in his 1964, 1967, and 1968 world series games. Cards fan from STL.
Also, the teams radio network guys did not start doing regional broadcasts of the playoffs and World Series until much later. Individual teams could let their radio affiliates carry the games, but the only feed available was the national radio network feed. However, both CBS Radio and NBC Radio would use a member of the radio crew from the visiting team on most occasions (Hence the use of Harry Caray here).

Jim Smith No. This is NBC Radio's coverage with Curt Gowdy & Harry Caray. Jack Buck didn't do the World Series until 1968.
