I agree completely: they had to demonstrate why the Magnificent Seven (Groot and Drax count as two each) couldn't just overpower him. I don't know how people could consider that scene to be "padding". They repeatedly show him threatening people with that anti-mutiny stick so that it won't be completely out of the blue when he finally uses it. It seemed like a perfectly well constructed sequence of scenes to me.
+1 Loved this movie! That Yondu scene made sense - otherwise, we'd all think that the angry blue dude's bark is worse than his bite but now we know why he's powerful and we know he's deadly. Also, if this movie was any less than 2 hours, I'd feel a bit 'ripped off' I'm glad we got a full 2 hours of FUN.
These people are nitpicking at this movie with their own opinions. This is by far the best Marvel movie, the best superhero movie, and the best space movie ever. No questions. Plain and simple
This had to be one of the best movies I have ever seen. At least it was one of my favorite. I left the theater thinking I would instantly watch it again. It was a blast like I haven't seen in a long time.
There is no way that this film felt too long or drawn out. It was the perfect length. I knew very little about GotG before this but I loved it! Quill, rocket and groot were amazing. Even Batista was good.
I enjoyed this more than Avengers... I will say.. especially because I know what these leads to.... Avengers + GOTG Vs. Thanos.... People getting killed.. Infinity Gauntlet time.... GOTG 2 and Avengers 3 is gonna be EPIC!!!
I was a massive Dan Abnett fan so I bought all the Annihilation, Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy comics as they were coming out, it's weird seeing a niche comic that only sold 20 thousand per issue becoming this big thnng.
I had a lot of fun with this movie! In comparison to the other Marvel films, this one felt a lot fuller to me, like I had a grasp of the whole universe. Nice review!
The Yondu arrow scene, besides Chekhov's gunning the arrow, sets up Yondu as (a) someone you have to worry about (IE, Starlord needs to worry about backstabbing him), and also it sets him up as somewhat of a hero - he risked his life rather than betraying his friend. This pays off in the end when he opens the orb at the end, as you know he probably knew all along and went with it anyway.
GotG was a hoot, and I value a well-rounded, technically sensational, colorful and entertaining movie highly. Great summer movie. Great pop-corn movie. Great space movie. Great re-watch movie. . . . We are Groot!
Guardians is all about aesthetic and it winks at us so so much, often in a few ways, breaking the fourth wall. ITS SO MUCH FUN !!! and the surprising emotion that this movie can be in contrast to all of the fun and zany-ness on screen tho i would support seeing this in regular 2D the 3D was okay-ish and mostly distracting, because the action sequences are easier to follow without the glasses .
I feel like The Avengers is really overrated. I didn't find it to be that amazing. I loved that they showed what the Hulk was capable of. But other than that, I didn't find it to be that awesome. I dunno, maybe I'm just crazy......
"I liked Super/I hated Super" is probably the most concise review of that movie to date. I liked it even with all its messiness but it's not a film that goes out of its way to please anyone. One of the most divisive superhero comedies I've seen.
I liked Super overall. This was the movie with Dwight and Kitty pride right? It was low budget and not perfect. But there was good story and good acting. All things considered. I saw it on Netflix. So I got my monies worth. I probably wouldn't have seen it in theaters, but a rental would have been fine.
I'm with Christy. I thought Super was great, a very different kind of superhero story featuring two of my favorite people. The Taxi Driver allusions were an interesting bonus.
The special effects were good, the jokes were funny, the "oldies" inspired sound track was awesome, and the cast were all basically great for their roles. I laughed out loud through pretty much the whole movie, as did everyone else in the theater where I saw it.My only real complaint was with some of the writing. They were so busy making jokes while breezing over important plot elements in some scenes that I had a hard time following what was going on.
the yondu scene was important. Its establishes that he was not to be F with and Quill knows this that is why he has to fake giving him the orb. plus its a nod he was a member of the guardians in the old books
If you want to go with a Star Wars analogy, Gamora is the best Luke analogue as the immensely powerful child of a powerful evil in the galaxy forced to choose between the darker and lighter sides of her nature.
The minute Matt Atchity started talking about Yondu's scene against a bunch of bad guy's I stopped listening. It was an Homage to his character from the 1970's Guardians of the Galaxy. And it was kind of made fun of prior, the scene showed how dangerous he could be. His character is very significant in the film and in the guardians universe.
This movie is drawing comparisons to Star Wars more than any superhero movie. I agree that I'm the last person who wants to see more crap like Daredevil/Green Lantern shoved at us, but if they can find ways to get funding to make different kinds of movies by using Marvel characters...do it.
Kevin Hoffmann And yet if you look at Star Wars, it borrows a lot from other sources. So is it really fair to compare Guardians to Star Wars just because we have these Joseph Campbell archetypes in a sci-fi setting, knocking it down a peg?
My point is that it's not fair to prejudge this as a typical superhero movie. The Hero's Journey is an archetype because it works, and I think it's absolutely fair to compare two stories that use it in a similar setting. I haven't seen Guardians yet, so I'm not ready to make that comparison myself.
Cable Television is making up for the gap in variety 30-50 million dollar Films Hollywood no longer makes. It more nuanced, provocative and more time to develop characters.
the scene, with yandu taking out all those thugs was important because it stresses out the point that he is a powerful guy and why starlord is afraid of him
@5:40..."Overpraise this movie". Well, if Hollywired would remember how to write and edit we might not be so flabbergasted by a fun popcorn movie. Hell, it was plan fun and (oh my) entertaining. They remembered why we go to the movies and didn't insult us.
Yeah I kinda feel a little firefly in it too. Probably why it's good. Ragtag group of renegade guys who are generally good at their core. Lots of comedy.
I thought it was a good and graphically beautiful movie, but I didn't love it like everybody else... Story is too cliche and I didn't feel attached to any of the characters. I find darker movies like the Batman Nolan trilogy and even Captain America 2, with the Bucky situation, more enjoyable.
The scene where Yondu kills everyone with his telepathic arrow thing, the only thing going through my mind was "Ohh, this scene is for all the dumb simpletons who watch movies."
The scene was supposed to show where his intimidation was, if the scene wasn't there you'd be bitching that Quill handed over the stone for no reason. The scene showed that he can take down massive amounts of people with ease.
Honour Rische That's the simpletons part. You can infer by the way the characters acted around Yondu, that the arrow was bad news for whomever it was pointed.
MobiusCoin but up til that point he didn't get to use it. Fans of the original comics wouldn't have been happy if his skills with his weapon was teased upon but never shown. I don't know why you're complaining. The scene was maybe 45 seconds long while other pointless things took forever. Like the pink girl cleaning and the collector talking for like three minutes about how she needs to clean better. That scene was unnecessary.
Alanso talking about the clumsy first 15 mins of the Avengers..hmm..I could never get through it myself, I would tune out after watching 5 minutes of it thinking myself, what the hell is going on here. Might check it out again then.
I think these number ratings are silly. Its only logical when its a percentage figure, like RT. They should just give the movie a thumbs up or down. See it or not.
Christy's comparisons to the Star Wars characters is pretty flimsy. Starlord is much more Han Solo than Luke, only like Luke in that he is an Orphan and he is the protagonist. Almost every other character trait he is most like Han. Gamorra is nothing like Leia except they are both chicks and tough. Groot is very Chewbacka, and then yeah in relation to Groot Rocket is the Han Solo (translates for him and pilots the ship) but like I said Star Lord is much closer to Han then Rocket. And then there is no R2-D2 or C3-PO or Obi Wan.
Yeah, this is the furthest thing from a superhero movie. It's more like your typical space opera/space western/bunch of misfits being awesome. It's one of my favorite tropes. Also, a lot of people have never read GOTG comics, including Marvel fanboys. And I love it because it's not serious, and dark, and up itself. It feels like Iron Man I again. I prefer it to any superhero movie in the last 10 years.
These guys are not qualified to talk about movies because they dont even understand the kind of movies they are watching!!!! GOTG is a COMIC BOOK MOVIE and as well as The Avengers. what do they expect other than action. I mean, I would understand if the action was bad. But tge action in both movies was spectacular and original so they cannot complain about how long the sequence is.
loved this movie. Going to say this best but best MARVEL movie to date. The humor/action was well put together. Rocket stole the show, and GROOTTTTTTT..
I'm glad Ben wasn't a part of the review. I love the guy when he talks about stuff he does know about, but he's shown a pretty disrespectful view on superhero films/alot of scifi&fantasy.
This looks pretty good but it does look like all the other recent marvel movies: They're not bad, in fact for the most part they're good......but tonally they're all the same [basically aping Firefly/Serenity dialogue & characterization], they're all too long and full of themselves and they all have such a similar look that I have to admit that I'm starting to have trouble telling them apart....... is that just me? :)
I have never seen one of your film reviews in which Christy did not moan about the length of the film. Really need to swap her out for a better reviewer with somewhat of a normal attention span.
I really dont understand why people like this movie. It tries to be funny but it just isnt. Its not like i dont get the jokes either. I get them. They just arnt funny. The best part of this movie is surprisingly the wrestler Batista's character. His taking everything literally shtick has been done before but it is mildly amusing. I walked out after about an hour and a half. I give it a 3 only because of the music and the green chick is hot.
Saw this last night. It's a really funny movie, and I cracked up almost the entire time. But the narrative's a real mess, and the connections between characters (that forced love connection, blerrrhggh) are half-hearted and rushed.
Without the Yohndu scene we would not have know why everyone feared him. It elevated him from just a plain alien to a guy who can take out an army.

Also, if this movie was any less than 2 hours, I'd feel a bit 'ripped off' I'm glad we got a full 2 hours of FUN.
Liesmith They probably consider it padding because they don't think Yohndu will be a big part of anything else.
totally agree. I really love the movie version of him. His weapon is more badass than the bow and arrow he uses in the books
I'm Mary Poppins Y'all!!
Just came back from watching it and it was a fucking blast. Easily the funnest movie of the summer; may not be the next Star Wars but its damn close.
All snark, no malark
Certainly better than the prequel trilogy.
***** No one ever thinks something's gonna' be special till it's got a good few years behind it.
Agreed.
Ritchie Chavez
Wow, it's kinda surprising to not see Alonso go straight up snob on this movie like how he's been doing with others recently
He still kinda does. No one is saying this is the best comic book movie ever, but everyone can agree it is a very fun movie to watch.
Just saw this last night and dame that was the most enjoyable movie of the year for me. 9.5
Howard the duck
asianfireflie They keep your laughing for the beginning to the ending. First action adventure movie to do that ever for me.
I just saw the movie. It`s amazing. First Marvel movie I`ve really enjoyed.
>.>
Surprisingly, I loved the emotional aspects of each of the characters. I liked this movie more than Avengers
hate people are comparing this to star wars. this is good star wars is NOT. old people are funny lol
I don't think it's possible to "overpraise" something. If you love it that much, you're justified in giving it praise.
I was a massive Dan Abnett fan so I bought all the Annihilation, Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy comics as they were coming out, it's weird seeing a niche comic that only sold 20 thousand per issue becoming this big thnng.
I didn't want this movie to end, so that's the biggest indicate that to me, it was awesome.
How can you take someone who didn't like "Super" seriously? You can't.
I had a lot of fun with this movie! In comparison to the other Marvel films, this one felt a lot fuller to me, like I had a grasp of the whole universe. Nice review!
This movie made me laugh like crazy, and cry on two separate occasions. It's amazing, and I'm already planning to go see it a second time.
I don't know what it is about this movie but I am in love with it. I laughed i cried i was blown away.
Brandon Bowditch yep youre crazy bro. Lol. The movie easily tops the entire Dark Knight franchise
Can you explain to me how that one little movie tops the entire Dark Knight franchise??
Brandon Bowditch
magic
One of the first reviews where I actually agree with most of your opinions. ..excellent review as always ..have a good day
Slither is fucking awesome!
Yes, yes it was. Sci-fi *slash* horror geeks wet dream. Total fun.
I own the dvd. It solidified my crush on Betsy.
"I liked Super/I hated Super" is probably the most concise review of that movie to date. I liked it even with all its messiness but it's not a film that goes out of its way to please anyone. One of the most divisive superhero comedies I've seen.
It's a 10. You're welcome.
I hear you Alanso I hated 'Super" as well
I liked Super overall.
It wasn't great, but you have to give points to a movie where the superhero's catchphrase is "Shut up, crime."
From the trailers I thought I would only be able to think of Bradley Cooper when Rocket talked. After the movie I realized I hadn't noticed it once.
All of these people gave Cap 2 a higher score than this... Are you fucking kidding me?
Cap 2 is better.
The special effects were good, the jokes were funny, the "oldies" inspired sound track was awesome, and the cast were all basically great for their roles. How does Star Lords cassette player still work after all those years in space, where is he finding AA batteries?
That spoiler alert thing is awesome, thank you very much editor/s!
the yandu scene is very very important ... if that scene wasn't in the cut, you wouldn't even know why peter quill would be cautious / afraid of him.
You can totally notice it's Bradley Cooper voicing to Rocket
They're never going to stop pushing out this capeshit, huh?
This movie is drawing comparisons to Star Wars more than any superhero movie. I agree that I'm the last person who wants to see more crap like Daredevil/Green Lantern shoved at us, but if they can find ways to get funding to make different kinds of movies by using Marvel characters...do it.

Cable Television is making up for the gap in variety 30-50 million dollar Films Hollywood no longer makes. It more nuanced, provocative and more time to develop characters.
The last three superhero films have been a fantasy film (Thor 2), a spy thriller (Captain America 2) and a space caper film (Guardians of the Galaxy).
Not a Marvel/Comic book/Super hero fan at all, but this movie was a lot of fun.
Star Lord is Han Solo... Rocket is Rocket.
"Aint no thing like me, cept me"
Whoa, wasn't prepared for that spoiler alert.
These guys must always order the extra large tub of popcorn.
How come 'cartoony' violence is okay for young kids, but any kind of sex, cartoony or not, is unacceptable?
the scene, with yandu taking out all those thugs was important because it stresses out the point that he is a powerful guy and why starlord is afraid of him
Guardians was easily the most fun movie I have seen in years. Oh. And best soundtrack incorporation ever. Yes, better than Resevoir Dogs.
Over rated, just like at least half of the Marvel movies.
@5:40..."Overpraise this movie". Well, if Hollywired would remember how to write and edit we might not be so flabbergasted by a fun popcorn movie. Hell, it was plan fun and (oh my) entertaining. They remembered why we go to the movies and didn't insult us.
Just saw it. Awesome movie, had me laughing all the way through, and I barely laugh out loud during movies!
Omg I so freaking love this movie ! One of my favorites parts is in 1:08
the movie was fricken awesome!!!!!!!!!!
I still think that it is the best Marvel film to date. I would much rather see more of this rather than another Hulk/Thor/Captain America
I actually do find this movie better than the avengers.
Yeah I kinda feel a little firefly in it too. Probably why it's good. Ragtag group of renegade guys who are generally good at their core. Lots of comedy.

iron man funny? funny to laugh at how anyone could like that "movie" lol
WRONG!!!!!he also says "we are groot"
love this one! my music!
thanks for the spoiler alert
So wrong when history is told, we will be a Classic, Fantastic film, a lot of people like me know already
I really liked Super as well, I wouldn't say I loved it but I enjoyed it a great deal.
The scene where Yondu kills everyone with his telepathic arrow thing, the only thing going through my mind was "Ohh, this scene is for all the dumb simpletons who watch movies."
I agree that was my lest favourite scene in the movie.I think it was a complete waste of time.
The scene was supposed to show where his intimidation was, if the scene wasn't there you'd be bitching that Quill handed over the stone for no reason. The scene showed that he can take down massive amounts of people with ease.

Honour Rische Whats the trope called? Someone's shotgun? If the movie teases you with a certain weapon, its gonna be used in the movie sometime.
Super and Slither were both awesome!
I found it really cheesy
Man, I've seen so many of these reviews that I've learned to discern in advance when Alonso likes a movie or not. He's eyes kind of twinkle lol
Alanso talking about the clumsy first 15 mins of the Avengers..hmm..I could never get through it myself, I would tune out after watching 5 minutes of it thinking myself, what the hell is going on here. Might check it out again then.
Oh..... Bens not there...... where is he....... at an audition...... lol
These guys are the worst nerds at movie reviews
I know this is done tongue in cheek, but what is the difference between a 7.9 movie and an 8 movie?
0.1
I think these number ratings are silly. Its only logical when its a percentage figure, like RT. They should just give the movie a thumbs up or down. See it or not.
at least it's better than 7.8%
Guernicaman spot on comment
***** I'd say 8 is very good. 9.5 and above is truly great.
If an 8 is truly great to you, what is a 9?
Christy's comparisons to the Star Wars characters is pretty flimsy. Starlord is much more Han Solo than Luke, only like Luke in that he is an Orphan and he is the protagonist. Almost every other character trait he is most like Han.
Gamorra is nothing like Leia except they are both chicks and tough. Yeah, this is the furthest thing from a superhero movie. It's more like your typical space opera/space western/bunch of misfits being awesome. It's one of my favorite tropes. I had a real fun time watching this movie. There hasn't been a great sci-fi flick since Star Trek.
No way is this the next Star Wars. I really enjoyed this film, but there is no 'next Star Wars' because we're getting a new Star Wars in 2015.
might be a good chance of a guardians cameo in an upcoming avengers
These guys are not qualified to talk about movies because they dont even understand the kind of movies they are watching!!!! GOTG is a COMIC BOOK MOVIE and as well as The Avengers. what do they expect other than action. I mean, I would understand if the action was bad. But tge action in both movies was spectacular and original so they cannot complain about how long the sequence is.
loved this movie. Going to say this best but best MARVEL movie to date. The humor/action was well put together. Rocket stole the show, and GROOTTTTTTT..
Yes but will it make a billion dollars.
Michael P. Shipley no it won't because it's not the well known franchise.. It'll do well via words of mouth hopefully.
its awesomeee. never overwhelming. funny all the time. if you have a problem with it you have no soul
Awesome, you guys found a new subscriber :)
Boring movie.
Christy gives everything a 7.5
Christy with the Nola shirt! Awesome! Wonder what ties she has to New Orleans.
I'm glad Ben wasn't a part of the review. I love the guy when he talks about stuff he does know about, but he's shown a pretty disrespectful view on superhero films/alot of scifi&fantasy.
Some people should cover their feet at all times...........Christy is one of those people.
STOOOOP FIRE CHRISTY. HOW CAN YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT ACTION MOVIES HAVING MUCH ACTION
This looks pretty good but it does look like all the other recent marvel movies:
They're not bad, in fact for the most part they're good......but tonally they're all the same [basically aping Firefly/Serenity dialogue & characterization], they're all too long and full of themselves and they all have such a similar look that I have to admit that I'm starting to have trouble telling them apart.......
is that just me?
:)
I have never seen one of your film reviews in which Christy did not moan about the length of the film. Really need to swap her out for a better reviewer with somewhat of a normal attention span.
This sounds like an apologist review for Transformers. Every single word
I love you for the Spoiler Alert
Thanks for the spoiler alert.

Yes their was a lot of violence in this movie, but also their bad language...compare with the other Marvel movies.
Guardians raped Iron man 3 and Thor 2. Probs not as good as cap action wise but I loooooved it so so much
I love you ***** Have my babies!!
Which one?
Geoff Goodwin All of 'em. Let's Russian Roulette this shit!
I am GROOOT...
Where the hell has Ben been?
9.1/10 from me.
Over rated! Like more than half of these constant Marvel releases...
nah
Saw this last night. It's a really funny movie, and I cracked up almost the entire time. But the narrative's a real mess, and the connections between characters (that forced love connection, blerrrhggh) are half-hearted and rushed.
