Thank you so much for a very informative tutorial on understanding jump rings and how you should do them. This is truly one of the best tuts I have found on the internet for this particular item.

It's difficult to close 12 gauge brass jump rings without damaging them. Most anyone would hold the pliers too tightly causing flat marks on the jump rings or too loosely causing the rings to slip and get scratched. The only thing that has helped me greatly is to use clear plastic tubing - a small piece slid over each jaw of the pliers using the tubing as a sort-of insulator between the pliers and the brass jump rings. It's not ideal, but it works. The tubing I use is a little stiffer and a bit larger than aquarium airline tubing.

HI there!! I am struggling to get my 20 gauge 4mm jump rings to close tightly- the chain that I use just slips right through the jump ring with a light tug! Any tips/suggestions? :(

You need to make either the gauge bigger for that size or use the 20 gauge with a smaller mm size. 20 gauge is a very thin wire size generally with 20 gauge I make 3mm sized jump rings. The best thing to note is the bigger size your jump rings are the thicker your gauge wire needs to be.

Thank you, but how do you close the rings that are open with a gap - say for when you're making earrings and you have to bend it down to close it? Do you squish them together or put pliers inside and pull it closed? I can easily close jump rings, just not sure exactly how to close the ring when attaching to an earring.

I've always been taught that you should have your dominant hand come toward you makes it easier to attach another ring to it. And as far as grip you have to be careful that your tools don't Mar the jump rings they could catch on your clothes.

I don't think it matters which way you open the ring, the most comfortable for the user and the ability to get it closed flush is most important. Also, I find that a tight grip where the ring doesn't slid around in the plier jaws is less marring than too loose a grip. Finding the sweet spot takes practice.
