  • In this video I'm going to draw a cute tiger cub. Doing highly detailed work with graphite pencil is very time consuming and this picture took about a month to complete.

For me it was the sharp pencils - quite a surprise! As always, may thanks Jamie for another inspiring video.

      Hi Mike,
Most of it was still done with blunt pencils but the odd sharp one for some of the very fine detail.
The thing that I did do differently this time was that I discovered from filming that it's very difficult as the camera is always in the way so I used an old video camera in front of the picture when doing the whiskers to blow the picture up on a monitor as this allowed me to get very clean lines around the whiskers. This is definitely not a quicker method but it definitely prevents alot of eye strain when working on areas lile this. Surprisingly, everything that I'm using to create these pictures is over 2 years old and that includes every single pencil.
      Thanks again,
      Jamie

Watching you with your dart and blending stump to apply texture is like therapy. Your technique is perfection. As always, I love watching you work Jamie.

Hi, Jamie. What a beautiful and inspirational drawing. I was trying to see what you did differently. I didn't see you using your etching technique on this one. Maybe I missed it. I also don't remember seeing you using the electric eraser. I have one and haven't used it yet. I am concerned that it may be too aggressive. Using the blending stump to base in the fur pattern and main features is a wonderful technique, too. I am sure it is easier to erase and shape things that way before you go all in. In any case, I enjoy all your videos and they make me want to draw more and get better. Thank you for taking the time to share your wonderful work with us! :)

It's still done the same as all the other pictures with the texture indented. It's difficult to spot but when I was working around the whiskers I actually used an old video camera to zoom in to them and then I worked on the picture looking at the monitor. You can see the video camera briefly as well as the monitor in the lower left hand side of the screen. This is a bit strange to get used to as you're working on the picture but actually looking at what you are doing on a screen. This isn't any quicker but it massively reduces eye strain allowing me to work for longer.
The electric eraser is a great tool. I would suggesst using it on a piece of scrap paper to deliberately see how much it takes to damage the surface. I did use it in this picture to re-establish some of the fine highlights in the eyes and I also used it to clean out some of the whiskers. The 2 papers that I use are the St Cuthbert's Saunders Waterford 300 g and the Arches Aquarell 356g both Hot Press. The St Cuthbert's is tough and it does take a lot to feather the surface. The Arches is even tougher and will take an unbelievable amount of abuse and that is what this picture was done on. The downside with this paper is that it's very difficult to work but it does give a beautiful result.
Yes, the blending stump is perfect for building up the picture and it is so easy to erase and make changes and alterations.
Thank you again so much for taking the time to watch and comment.
      Jamie
