    We have built your stands, aquariums, and other various items that you have covered. All a complete success. You have saved us so much money, and we have been able to build these products to tailor to our needs; instead of what a manufacturer believes we need. On behalf of the The Reef Spot, we thank you. Keep up the awesome tutorial videos and most of all enjoy the satisfaction of knowing your helping others!

    im a stained glass artist and i suggest after using the glass cutter tool, tap the glass a few times to make the crack deeper. this prevents your glass from breaking in unwanted places.

    Bro 12 years later I'm still coming back to this to emergency rebuild my 125. I was scared I would need to buy a new one after I came home to day to ~15 gallons of water on the basement floor, but your calm demeanor and straight forward approach always give me the confidence to DIY. I resealed this aquarium 8 years ago with the help of one of your (then new) videos and now I'm making use of your disassembly video and this build video. Love ya Joey

    Man brother, I know this is an old video but you have come such a long way since this video and its awesome. Im going back to some of your older videos because Im going to be turning my Big Wooden Entertainment stand into a large Paludarium. I only need one piece of glass for the front portion that will hold the water feature, Ill have a divider with dual sliding panes for the top half. Your home made filtration videos are really saving my butt. As well as the video explaining the Pond Armor. Great Content as always

    Home Depot sells all types of thickness Plexi glass and Reg clear glass sheets. If you are sanding glass please wet the sandpaper and sand wet so you don’t breath in the dust... breathing in ANY glass dust can causes permanent lung scaring that can get worse and worse over time as the glass dust never comes out. like fiberglass does. Also an idea...Black silicone is an option. It’s what Imagitarium uses on some of their tanks which looks cleaner, sharper and never stains. I wonder if a round Plexi tank can be made with Plexi glass sheets. Anyone try yet?

    • @elslick
      @elslick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can but you need the right type of oven to heat and shape the glass. Would be pretty difficult to do on yourself but what one person can do another can do so why not.

    Great video, but having been a glass cutter for years it was painful to watch sometimes, you need to hold the glass cutter like a pen, dip it in mineral oil and apply consistent pressure (just try to use the weight of your arm) and movement. You still did a good job though, some really good tips too. I'm thinking of doing a fishtank up my stairs so this helped, thank you 👍

    Your videos are very helpful. If I were to build a 40"X18"18" (LXWXH) rimless and braceless tank with glass thickness of 3/8" - 1/2", would it be possible and still safe?

    • @dramoth64
      @dramoth64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I would go with anything from 8mm (1/3") to 12mm (~1/2") glass just to be safe. 6mm is too thin for that length. If you've never made a tank before, I would practice first on making smaller tanks just to get used to it before moving up to the heavier glass.

What I meant was when you 1st starting getting interested in building tanks.I was referring to when you were just a kid and curious about it (if you even were... IDK, it was just an idea) You might have started building these things when you weren't a kid. My dad started his hobby of building all kinds of stuff when he was like 7. lol he built a little house/shack in the backyard w/ electric all by himself. He has also blown shit up too.

    Be me - building an aquarium while listening to guns n roses - welcome to the jungle (I am very hype and aggressively applying the silicone) As I'm dancing around and singing, I run out of silicone. Headed to the store to get more, and I remember I need a micro pizza cutter. Fast Forward... Back from store. Forgot to get silicone. Time to put this micro pizza cutter to use I guess. Trip over my 100 roles of electrical tape on the ground and slice into the almost finished tank with my micro pizza cutter, slicing the tank in two perfect halves. I'm still singing guns n roses as this happens, but not so aggressively anymore.

  • @phcoh
    @phcoh 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tip, before you use the glass cutter have a little white spirit handy dab a cotton ball / small piece of sponge and run the white spirit along where your going to cut, then use the glass cutter, you will find the glass breaks much easier and at a near 90 deg to the face, the light oil runs into the crack the cutter makes keeping it a few microns open,nice straight edge is easier sealed, soapy water and rinse will clean it up fine before you silicone. (used to work in glass factory)

    • @thekingofdiy

      +Joshua Heitmann Phonebook, google.... call around! Sheets of glass isn't something you order online and have shipped to you. Imagine the shipping costs and chances of it breaking! Call glass shops in the area. Window places. windshield places, etc.. Ask around. Just regular glass. (they will call it plate glass or float glass) .I just buy from a local shop. or take old tanks apart. or hit craigslist up for used glass.

I Don't know if they have any of those stores in Canada But I live in the U.S trying to find a cheaper way of making a glass Tank for my Bearded dragon. :P I want to have it sealed though incase I ever want to increase size of my beardies tank and use old one for Fish :P

  • @ILTK

    Joey, you're a champ dude. I'm building a shrimp setup with 20 10 gallon tanks. This saved me a ton of money so far. I got a local glass guy to cut the glass, still waaaay cheaper.. like ridiculously much cheaper than buying all those tanks.
    If anyone's scared of trying this, don't be, it's actually pretty easy, esp. if the tanks are small.
    After getting some practice doing the small tanks, I'm pretty confident I can do something larger = No more buying massively expensive tanks.

    Don't you need some sort of frame to keep the glass panels together? .. that's a lot of weight in there!

    • @thekingofdiy
      @thekingofdiy  10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A top brace can be added for support, but the silicone is what holds every glass tank together. You might be referring to the black trim on tanks you see? If so, that does not offer any support in most cases unless it has a center support.
