Hope you are feeling better now. Always err on the side of caution. Horses are always unpredictable. Even the quietest one can freak out. You did a great job! Thanks for sharing.
Had a super broke mare that suddenly and completely lost her mind on a routine trail ride down our road. Got off and lead her home. Two days later, a momma bear and cubs showed up on our pasture trail cam. Took the mare 6 months to get over it. Never any shame to get off a scared horse. They aren't faking it.
Ouch! Hope your foot recovers quickly. Thanks for sharing this. Charlie, you’re a good boy❤ Great reminder that even the BEST horses & riders have off days.
When horses tell you clearly they are upset, believe them and try to find out why. Not sure how doing the same thing, just riding more would change his mind about spooking. Very nice that the horse was being ridden in a halter, so kudos for that.
Just saw a wonderful video by Warwick Schiller that perfectly explains why the horse continued to spook. After the first spook, the horse never returned to a calm state, but continued to hold that worry. Next spook, more worry, etc. To ride safely, we must have a way to help the worried horse return to a calm state before moving on. So even when the rider got off, the horse was still worried.
@@slunt3123 Yes! I really like Warwick Schiller. Another horseman/teacher I follow refers to having some practiced things to go to as 'recovery strategies'. This short is one example: th-cam.com/users/shortsQtZcq1TsSbU
"Just one of those days" We still appreciate you showing it. Sometimes things go unexpectedly and its important to know how to handle it. Was very interesting to see and of course very sorry about your foot. Feel better Its too late now but I do wear steel tipped shoes and boots around the horses. It wont always help and you should not let it make you careless but they have saved a few toes from spooks.
I was riding my husband's big complacent friesian horse near a ripe maize field when Guinea fowls flew out of the field. He totally spooked, my stirrup slipped out, lost my balance and fell and he galloped home helter skelter leaving me behind. He is difficult now when trying to get him to go on an outride and we are just riding him in the ring now.
Thanks for sharing great video! So sorry it's so swollen. Maybe the full flower moon? I noticed my horses tend to act up and be more scared during the full moons. Just wanted to throw it out there. Great riding and recoveries!
He lacks confidence, just needs patience and a lot of quiet riding out.Good for you persevering with him.Hope you have your phone with you in case of accidents.
He defo feels bad, He’s like sorry mum, I didn’t mean it. Hope he feels better soon and can get better with his nerves. Glad you are safe though and you don’t have any more serious injuries.
I appreciate your bravery, it’s a good thing you’re young. Some days they are spooky, some days they are not, even when you ride close to home. Sounds, smells that pop up. At least you don’t have a lot of trees around to make it even worse. 🙂
Oh man I hope your foot gets better! I ride alone a lot too but I never go without my dogs bc it seems like when I don't bring them my mare gets a lot more nervous bc its just us two. When I bring the dogs I think she feels some sense of protection or feeling of not being alone so she usually doesn't spook or get real nervous. She carries her head lower and seems more relaxed than if i dont bring the dogs Maybe you could try that ❤
You need to find a Way to get him connected to you - it was like he was on his own and that is bad for a horse - look up Ryan Rose he has some very good advice on how to carm down a horse and reconnect getting their attention back on You so they Can relax - The leadership you had on The Ground you want that to transfer to The saddel😊
Wonder if there was some sort of predator around that had him on edge & hyper alert & reactive? If he has seen or smelled a predator in the past day or two that might explain why he was so spooky.
That's what I was wondering too. It is Spring, and we have been seeing more wildlife on our rides. Usually, we just see deer, but we do have coyotes, wolves and bears in my area.
Hope your foot recovers quickly and no serious harm was done to it. I wonder if he's smiling other animals or something?? Today, at my lesson "October" (my introvert, very sensitive mare) was spooking because of the wind and I lost my stirrup almost doing a digger too. It would be interesting to find out if there is something he might be smelling.
Once I learned some natural horsemanship I could ride my crazy mare in a rope halter, and I never went back to a bit or mechanical hackamore . It’s a process of teaching them to be responsive to pressure.
@@horsetraining101 Thanks for replying. I guess I'm just thinking about situations when a horse panics and starts to bolt, or quite simply decides to use it's own will and ignore your instructions. If you haven't got the reins attached one on each side, you're really limiting your options in a bad situation. Sometimes you need to be able to physically turn their head.
You can see his mind was on everything else and not you. Glad it didn't end up worse than what it did. I had a mare who was the perfect ride until we rode down streets with letterboxes, to her they just kept jumping out at her, all I could do was hang on and laugh😂. Those were the good ol days. 🐎
This happens with my young filly ... She so super quiet then bam! When my horses get what I call ‘watchy‘ I have to make a decision am I staying on or walking Recently she really reacted to horses in a paddock we had just rode past on way back she spotted them and was beside herself flitting about so I got off Hope your foot heals 🤗🤗
You look like you were doing the right things keeping him moving and all. The only thing I might suggest is to start turning him left and right, serpentine patterns then figure eights. Get him to think that he needs to pay attention to you. That said, I don’t want to armchair quarterback you because I wasn’t riding him.
That's what I was thinking because of his craned neck. I myself do not have a left eye to see from and I'm always having to maneuver my neck to see things. Hope your foot feels better soon. 😞
It’s a windy day. Horses are often more spooky on windy days. The windier it gets the worst they get. is there wildlife for the area? That could be an issue also.
You sure a bear or cougar or wolf 🐺 is not in the area seriously they smell them and gear pharmones before you come across predators horses are prey animals it like riding a 1200 pound jack rabbit 🐇 🐰 on defense ⚠️ alert mode great job mom n dad riding him cowgirl up thoughts n prayers 🙏 ✝️
Wtf is wrong with you? All horses don't need to to go the glue factory if they have problems. You know how to fix problems? Training! Groundwork and communication can go a long way for a horse dude.

Good point. Wouldn’t be surprised if that horse caught the scent of something.

she did pay attention to him and got off and walked home, unfortunately he accidently stepped on her foot !! not his fault.
@@dawncamp303 Yes! It does tell me, though, that she was leading him too close.

I liked that you rode in the ropehalter! I maybe saw that he filled up his "worry cup", without "resetting"? Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I heartily second both connection and Ryan Rose! Excellent horseman and teacher of both horses and people.
Every day on my Arabians 😂
Just wondering why you would ride a reactive horse like him without a bridle or at minimum a hackamore.
You only had a halter on??
You think a pain bit would have helped?
The worry is sad...
Have days like this, too! Hope foot heals up well

It definitely could be something he is smelling, we do have a big creek nearby and we do have coyotes, wolves, and bears in this area.
My horse when I was a teen would spook at something white of any size. She went at a 45° angle on me while we were loping bareback.
Please can you tell me about the halter Charlie is wearing? It doesn't look as if you have any steering power with it. Thank you.

I bought this halter from Amazon, the brand is Knotty Girlz and it's actually one of my favorite halters.

The lead rope was tied into loop reins. Sorry the camera didn't show that.
My ride yesterday went like that, my whole body is pretty sore today as some of the spooks were a full body jarring 😅
You handled that well!! 👍
Thank you!

😬
Well wishes for the foot. Poor Charlie having his nerves rattled. Just one of those days I’m sure you’d rather not repeat.
Maybe unfamiliar wild animals near. I don't know if you have bears or mountain lions, but if my horse acted like that, I'd get the heck out of there!
Try to ride with someone with a horse that doesn't spook. Your horse will learn there's nothing to be afraid of.

Where are you? This is beautiful country!
I live in Washington State, a few miles from the Canadian Border. Yes, it is beautiful, especially in the Spring!
He is not ready for a trail, more ground work maybe get his yeys looked at.
Blinker hood
That would just mask (quite literally) the problem and it would come out some other way.
He is not having fun.
You got to break them before you make them.
You can never really count on a horse trained by force and fear.
My horse acts like that too. Very reactive. I can never ride her in the woods because if I did it would be a disaster 😅

No bit???
many people ride bitless with just as much control
Didn’t he have a bit in his mouth? I think you’d have better control with one if you did !
Get him some blinders. If that doesn't work, time for the glue factory.

I pray you don't have any animals.
