All the Group B rally cars were something very special and an amazing feat of engineering. Even today, building something as rugged and ridiculously fast as these cars were would be an amazing achievement. Let alone over 20 years ago! Not to mention the people who actually drove these monsters...

the S1's 5 cylinder engine sounds like a V10! Great noise! Should have included footage of the Audi Quattros as they were the rivals for the 037. Imprudent spectators (like the guy who stands right in front of the speeding S1 to take pictures) made Group B disappear.
The first rally quattro was just a quattro modified for rally. from 1983 the Group B evolutions of the quattro where used: the A1 and A2. After that the sport quattro was used called S1 and the final version, the one with the big wings, is called S1 E2 :D
According to Wikipedia, The Audi Quattro S1 has a 2110 cc turbo straight-5 making 450 PS. The Lancia Delta S4, like you said, has the 1759 CC turbo-supercharged 4 cylinder engine.
guys, these two as well as the other GR.B cars are all great and best in there own ways, dont 4get that by todays standards the S1 would not even be in the same group as the rest due to there configuration, that fact that a dissavantaged S1 could be made to go as quick as the rest, just shades the audi as the best car in my humble opinion, long live the grandaddy of them all

Lombardi (btw the creator of RSV4 Aprilia engine) is a f....in genius! he was 30 years ahead of everyone .. In the 1986 they were already testing a new evolution of engine, people look for on google " triflux engine" , it's a very modern configuration of turbo engine
The Delta S4 is a very impressive race car, but i think that the peugeot205 T16 was better in the handling department. It was shown in european rallycross, especially with matti alamaki who drove both cars.
The car that they wanted to put on s-group was called ECV (experimental Composite Vehicle) and it had 600 hps but I cannot tell for certain how much there truly were... and I know that the group-s was limited to "only" 300 hps
guys...:)reading your posts, you seem both to be right, but mayve you didn't found the rught way to tell it:)the extra weight gives extra stability on straigths, but increases the moment of inertia on a turn.yes, with +300kg, you get more grip,but,due to bigger inertia, you'll end up with less handling on sharp turns than a -300kg chassis. plus, it's harder to accelerate 1200kg with the same engine as it is for 900kg,aslo it takes longer to break the extra weight.
Ah and don't forget to look for also " Lancia ecv1 and ecv2" the evolutions of S4 , built with composite materials and with 800 hp engine power ,triflux engine of course, enjoy it!
I read somewhere that in the S4 they had something like 490 horsepowers... there were at least that 450hps.. and in this banned S-group car they had something like 600 hps And audi build twin-turbo version of S1 with more than 1000 hps

Delta S4 was clearly faster than Audi S1, S4 won the first two rallyes it entered and it had quicker stage times on rallies when competed to S1. Actually Peugeot 205 T16 was also faster than Audi S1. Peugeot won the 1986 championship on the fact it was more reliable than Lancia and Lancia also lost it's star driver Henri Toivonen in fatal crash at Corsica so the team was demoralized and I suspect that after that Alen and Biasion never felt confident enough to push the Delta to it's true limit.
I think Audi was the slowest car ever. It got very slow. How could he compete? How do the Germans think this? When the lancia and the audi are on a video, and the two are already offensive to the Italian engineers! I think it's like a joke!
The S4 was not an evolution of anything, they only called it the delta after the already existing delta series for marketing purposes, but it was nothing like any car they made before or since, it was definitely nothing like the 037. It merely replaced the 037 for competition in group b.

2nd. issue:handling. Centrifugal force = mass x speed / curve radius; Friction= massx friction coeff x 9.81. try to figure it out, what means better handling by calculating how centrifugal force increases directly with mass, and friction increases only with a fraction of a mass...m x u x g= m x v /r. i really wonder why in F1 they add wings, to add downforce, when, according to your theory, they should fill the cars with helium :)

I love all of the group B cars its really hard to say wich group B car tahts the best but my favourite is the audi if i must pick only one. the 037 and the audi was much like the reverse of each other and the delta s4 like a mid one. The 037 was way more reliable than the audi and could turn faster in tight corner because it was shorter, lighter only RWD.
u seem to 4get that the S1 had major heating probs, and lead a few rallies b4 succumbing to reliabity issues, and infact lead the S4 and T16 in 1985 RAC driven by Hannu, also Walter also lead in the S1 in monte carlo b4 tyre issues lost him plenty of time the 86 S1 was quicker the the T16 in san remo both on gravell and tarmac.
Friction=mass x gravity acceleration(9.81)x friction coeff (u=0.3...0.8 depending of the surfaces in contact). how did you come to the conclusion that more weight means less grip ? :) take a 9th grade science book, you'll be surprised of what you'll find there. also, friction coeff is the same for same materials, no matter the masses involved.
How very little you know about rally sport to make a statement like that, The 037 was no match for the S1 (maybe on tarmac) the late S1were very much a match for the s4 and t16 and as a matter of fact STILL holds the 0-60 time. The Audi was dogged by overheating, but lead 3-4 rallies b4 going out with problems. Please only make comments when you have, and understand the basic priciples of a sport. Dont polute this area with garbage.
so let's talk about the highest evolution cars. all of these 3 shown cars are amazing, also the mg metro 6r4. but the delta s4 and the 205 t16 e2 were rallycars in their owm division. the audi sport quattro e2 was maybe the best show-car but it was less fast, then peugeot and lancia. problem was the frontengine and because of that the understeering, the audi was to close to a normal street car, the handling was poor. the peugeot and lancia were pure mid-engined racecars, only built to win.

Lancia Squadra Corse and Cesare Fiorio was the best team in the world rally for over 20 years. don't confuse, Ferrari only give a engine for the stratos in mid '70s (and this was completly re-works by Lancia). And btw Please don't confuse true legends in Rally like Lancias with other "cold-box"...

The 037 was actually only car with rwd ever to win the quattro s1, driven by ofc Markku Alen and Henri Toivonen.

It is B-class Rally, only 200 is enough for production. So S4 was a production car. Only 200 made.
