    No talking, just walking. Exploring the English Countryside. Walking around York's City walls
    York's city walls were originally built by the Romans in 71 AD, and have been rebuilt and extended over the centuries. The walls are nearly 3 miles long, and include four main gates and 39 towers. During medieval times, the walls were improved with additional gates and fortifications, and served as a means of defence for the city. In the 19th century, the walls were restored and made accessible to the public as a popular walking route. The walls also played a role in the Siege of York during the English Civil War, and sustained damage during World War II bombings. Today, they remain a popular tourist attraction and symbol of the city's rich history.

    About Dave's Walks
    Hi there, I‘m Dave! I've lived in the English Countryside all my life, and I love it! I enjoy walking, and couldn’t help but notice just how beautiful the UK can be away from the cities. I found myself inspired and decided to get some camera equipment and make some walking videos so I can share my walks of the beautiful countryside with everyone!
    I mainly focus on small towns, villages, picturesque landscapes, rolling hills and mountains, forests and canals, all along the coastlines in England, Scotland, Wales, and who knows maybe one day further afar!
    I upload every Sunday 11.45am GMT (3.45am PST) (6.45am EST) (5.15pm IST) (9.15pm ACST)

    One of the most beautiful city centres in England. I was there in August and found myself wandering around on the top of those walls. And York Minster is spectacular. It looks so good in this video. Pin sharp photography. Beautiful job. Thanks.

    My young daughter and l had a flat very close to the Minster in the late 90's she had a friend whose' father worked at the Minster and they lived in one of the large houses , their garden ran right up to these walls and they would enjoy playing there when l dropped her off and collected her l would go into the garden stand and look and think how lucky we both were at that moment in time .l never once took it for granted .Good memories.

    There's a lotta history in those walls. Every brick, building, walk way that has a secret of things that have happened that humans will never know. The beginnings. Just a ¼ of knowledge man wouldn't understand. WHY, WHEN and who. Thank you for sharing this. I'll never be able to visit here. But your videos are 👍 💯% 🇺🇲

    You Brits certainly know how to preserve and showcase your cultural heritage. In a well planned and evolving city even the newer buildings will become part of that heritage eventually. Your walk illustrated it perfectly. Thanks for a nicely thought through and produced video.
    Loved how the chap busking outside York Cathedral was playing traditional music rather than murdering contemporary hits with a raucous amplifier. It all added to the atmosphere.

    Thank you so much for sharing. What a beautiful town and so full of history. My husband’s niece lives in Chippenham, I’m not sure where that’s located but I would love to see York. Pretty much all of England. She invited us to visit her and her family but we both need the right timing from our jobs, to be able to visit her, when we do it’ll be for two weeks and we’ll stay at her home since she has an extra bedroom for us. Saves on money for a hotel lol.. Cheers from Southern California and a have a great and blessed 2024! 😁

      York is in the north of England and more than two hundred miles from Chippenham I think. You could get there by train in about four hours but it would take longer to drive and either way I suggest you would have to stay a night or two to make the trip worthwhile.

    Hi Dave, which of your videos would better represent the "modern" neighborhood?

    • @DavesWalks
      @DavesWalks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a hard one. I focus on mostly old villages that often date back centuries. Even the towns I visit, whilst they become modernised over time, still date back by centuries. I do have some videos where I have briefly explored reasonably newish houses. Try the Tattershall village video, and perhaps the Starkholmes village video.

    • @clairenoon4070
      @clairenoon4070 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There isn't really such a thing as a 'modern neighbourhood' in the UK. By definition, almost all villages, towns and cities have a mix of old and newer.
      The nearest you could get is either a new housing development in an existing village, town or city, or what's known as a 'New Town' - mostly built from the 1950s to 1990s. But there aren't many new towns compared to the tens of thousands of 'normal' towns.
      You'd even need to be careful about the term New Town. My brother lives in an area of Edinburgh called New Town. It's actually Georgian (c. late 1700s), but it was the new part of town when it was called New Town!

    • @kingofracism
      @kingofracism 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A place like Milton Keynes would be good to showcase a more modern town. I've never been there but if you look at it on Google maps the whole layout and design of the town is quite different compared to other cities and towns

      But if you're thinking of modern buildings, tall ones and the like, then London is your best bet. London has a few clusters of tall and modern buildings

      I didn't get to try any of the pubs on my visit to the wall so I am afraid not. I'd like to think if your in the city centre then you can't go wrong with any of them.

    If you are not going to include a description of were you are, you need to include a shot of the street sign before you shoot each section. Without this or a map showing the route you have followed it becomes meaningless.

      I agree with you, which is why in the description of all my videos there has always been a google map route of my entire walk, a what3words grid reference to the start of the walk including mileage/km and even how many steps the walk took me 😄 Merry Christmas 🎄🎁

    6 digit phone number?

      that's the local extension, UK landlines also have a 5 digit regional prefix that everyone just kind of assumes you know. York's is 01904. I think if you're calling another number in the same region you just need the 6 digits.
