Using 2 hands when making a case with a spinning rod is a lot easier as you indicated! I grew up using a spinning rod and I still use these exclusively. Great video and thanks for the tips Randy!

I grew up using common classic 'affordable' Zebco 202 reals with short handle (what I call pistol grip) rods, so I've always casted 1 handed until the last 2 or so years. After retiring at age 60, I finally got myself some nicer rods & reals & am retraining myself. For accurate casting under & between overhanging trees/brush with a spinning setup, I still fall back on a 1 handed side arm cast using my whole arm, staring at where I want the bait to land, & visualizing the entry, but I will try following your professional advice in my retraining. 😊

I think I was born with a spinning rod in my hand so most of this came naturally. There is less wear and tear with the two hand cast. Some times as circumstances would have I might skip one handed but mostly is two handed. Practice builds muscle memory and at 68 I still do so nearly everyday. I've got a pond 100 yards wide & 200 yards long I like to practice at near the house but also use my yard or a park all nearby. I use an old bait without hooks to cast. My cast are always well placed as I use targets for placement. It'll help greatly! It's just me and a couple golfers out there, them with their irons and a ball. For pitching & flipping I use an old frosting can. Good luck!

I fish casting setups 90% of the time but i can see what i am doing wrong with my spinning setup. One handed with little control. Thanks for another great video as always, Randy.

I started fishing at 9 year old boy with a 7foot spinning combo. I use sidearm casting. Overhand I didn't get any distance. Four years ago I started using a baitcaster 7foot

I need to work on my pitching skills using a spinning setup. I'm really good with a baitcaster, spinning leaves a lot to be desired. Back when I was a kid, I used my whole body to cast. My dad told me to pretend that I had a newspaper folded under my arm and to only use my wrist. I can still here him say, "don't drop my newspaper." Same thing when fly fishing.

Randy why do you reel left hand with spinning gear but not your baitcasters?

You're right, it's almost always better to use 2 hands when you cast a spinning rod.

If you truly want to learn how to use a spinning rod, find a shallow, 2-3 ft deep, rocky, moderately fast moving stream with plenty of rocks breaking the surface. In other words a limestone trout stream. Use a 6'-61/2' light action rod with a 100-200 size reel spooled with 6-8 lb. braid and learn to cast 1/16 to 1/8 spinners at the protruding rocks until you can drop the lure into the riffles behind them without getting hung up on the bottom. You will learn to cast over hand and side armed but with ONE HAND You will learn how to feather the line with the other hand and immediately engage the reel or you will loose a bucket load of $3-4 lures. You will also learn that the two handed overhand cast is for bass anglers standing on the bow of a boat using a rod that is two big to cast with one hand. Watch the bass pros on the internet and see how many times they are using a spinning rod for anything other than throwing jerk baits and drop shot rigs out into the middle of the lake.

I’m guilty of using my whole body especially as the day goes on and my technique just disappears. Gotta remind myself to slow down.

No. Put the line under the tip of your thumb. To release it, just roll your thumb back.
