I’m not sure it’s truly that astounding to guess what 1981 holds when you’re in 1979 and working with technology. Music videos were essentially invented in the 60s, and playing them as promotional tools was happening in the mid-70s. Not to knock the song, it’s a great one, and Trevor Horn is an incredibly impressive MFer. But it wasn’t like a prescient telling of the future, it was an observational documentation of the past and (then) present.
New Wave got its start in the late 70s. Gary Numan's first stuff came out in 78 or 79, and it's at least as synthpop-sounding as this. In fact most of what we think of as early 80s started in the late 70s, Van Halen I came out in 78.
So sassy, stylish and inventive. 80's songs were all so unique with their own original melodies. Today the music is trash, nothing new, nothing inventive.
