  • Joshua Nkomo is one of the fathers of African nationalism, and stands alongside Africa's greatest fighters against colonialism, and injustice. He is right up there with the greatest of them.
He was the epitome of courage. Joshua Nkomo was affectionately known as Father Zimbabwe for the role he played in Zimbabwe’s liberation from Colonial rule.
"Father Zimbabwe", spearheaded Zimbabwe's struggle for black majority rule from the 1950s onwards. In the 1980s he also faced persecution from Robert Mugabe’s government and he was labelled as an enemy of the state.

Great video, but there were never problems between shona and ndebele after independence rather political differences between Zanu and Zapu.

Father zimbabwe would have united zimbabwe like Nelson Mandela did in South Africa. Instead a power hungry tribalist Robert Mugabe brought division to the nation and his predecessors continue his legacy. RIP big josh

      Hi! Bush War enthusiast here.
While in theory there was only a political difference between the two, in practice ZANU represented the interests of the Shona and ZAPU the interests of the Matabele. This was because Nkomo of ZAPU was Matabele, and Mugabe of ZANU a Shona. Tribal differences were not intended, but emerged naturally due to the engrained sense of tribalism.
I know it’s been two years, but there will be others.

@@jamesgordonphiri362 That's mighty optimistic of you! Sadly, human nature is also to band together in clans-- and British colonialism exacerbated differences between tribes further, rendering them more pronounced and therefore creating the system of 'tribes as a political party' you see across Africa today. I never said they weren't human, either!

His role as VP was not symbolic at all. He was the executive vice president of the party and government. There was no doubt that he was the father of the nation, this was acknowledged by the gvt and president. We all know how obstinate RGM could be, but on Nkomo he made every effort to reconcile and show respect. We all loved Mudhala Wethu.

@Ross Rhodie The economy of Zimbabwe is battered because of western sanctions. The Shonas and Ndebeles have a generational vendetta till this day. The Shonas hate Ndebeles immensely. To say there was never any problem between Shonas and Ndebeles is an utter lie. @Ross Rhodie The white regime never intended to share Zimbabwe's wealth with it's black natives equally, they wanted everything for themselves like they are doing in South Africa today.

There was no serious problem in the early nationalist movement. The problems were created by British inteeligence which organised the ZANU split in 1963 through the Capricorn Africa Society founded by David Stirling. In the early 1950s Benjamin Burombo, a Shona led the people of Bulawayo while Charles Mzingeli, an Ndebele led the people of Salisbury.

Wishful thinking is not history. Its a big lie to say there was no problem between the Shona and Ndebele. These two tribes didn't see eye to eye before and after the arrival of British settlers. The Shonas were deemed inferior by the Ndebele, raided from time to time, having their cattle and women stolen. Even those of Shona and Venda blood who were absorbed in Mzilikazi's Kingdom were treated as third class citizens. The British actually saved the Shona from further humiliation and displacement by the Ndebele. Both tribes were hampered by severe illiteracy, unlike the Basotho who were led by the educated and diplomatic King Moshoeshoe. King Moshoeshoe was wise enough to seek the protection of the British from the Zulu. The Shona/Ndebele rivalry started long back in the 1900s during Mfecane with the arrival of Mzilikazi. Lets stop lying and tell history as it is.

He was not tricked, he was forced into submission. He narrowly escaped assassination, he had to sacrifice his life and ambition to make sure Zim survived independence. Something like what happened in Rwanda was about to happen in Zim. He was given no choice.
