    I was 11 years old when this aired and stayed up late to watch it. We wanted to see Wally Cox who was such a close family friend that he was like my uncle. Wally spent the night with us that night and me, my parents and Wally all watched this together. (Wally no longer had a NYC residence so he sometimes stayed with us when he was in New York.) I never thought I would ever get to see it again. Wally was every bit as gentle a man in real life as he seemed on Television. But he detested bullies and that fool Jimmy Dean thought he could score points by pushing Wally around and ended up like pig grease on the studio floor. So many people made that mistake with Wally. They confused him with the character he played, Mr. Peepers. Bravo Cox! But he died far too young. My father's eulogy for him, published in the NY Times, ended this way: "One magic morning I found him [Wally] gazing out the window at an extraordinary sunrise. 'What a beautiful day,' I said. 'Thank you.' He said. Thank YOU Wally. But it should have lasted longer." RIP Wally. Sui Generis.

      Oh Wally was a tough, wiry guy. He is the only person I have ever known who could build a house on his own: carpentry, wiring, electric, plumbing, you name it. So yes, he could have but he wouldn't have. He was pretty close to a pacifist. Violence was for physical self-defense only.

    These two guys knew one another. It was all a game.
    Jimmy Dean was a self made man, but generous as well. He helped to establish Jim Henson and turned down a 40% share of his production company because he believed Henson deserved the benefits from all his work.

    It's remarkable that Cavett had Mr. Burgess on his show as frequently as he did, and the amount of time allotted to him was very generous given the pressures and constraints of the talk show format. Thank you for uploading.

      @@jubalcalif9100 Mr. Cavett was a much more serious and better interviewer than Johnny or Merv.
      But in the early days and into the 70's, Johnny would have authors and intellectuals on, often close to the end of the program; and though Cavett was a superior interviewer, Carson was quite competent.

      Growing up I remember Wally Cox from movies the voice of Underdog and of course Hollywood Squares and he was a performer I always enjoyed but this is the first interview I’ve seen with him and I have a whole new appreciation of him, he was very witty and intelligent and an interesting person. Sad that he died so young. And Dick Cavett was always great and an excellent Interviewer.

    I watched this program live. The thing is that no talk show ever had put a mongoose (Wally Cox) on the same stage as a Cobra (Jimmy Dean). Wally was quite the gentle man throughout his interview segment. Jimmy Dean used the first moments of his segment to totally disrespect Wally Cox, on national television. I was mesmerized as I watched Wally weave his words around Jimmy's ears as Jimmy completely lost himself in his own confused attempt to bully Wally. In the end result, Wally showed that one can be gracious without accepting bad behavior; Jimmy Dean showed that he was simply a fangless snake. Thank you Archy for posting this specific Dick Cavett Show, for allowing me an unexpected check on my bucket list.

This is a wonderful example of disparate personalities interacting that doesn't happen on talk shows now. This show filled a 90 minute time slot and ideas and conversations had time to develop. Underdog brought me here. It was the only way I knew Wally Cox: syndicated Underdog cartoons on Sunday mornings. He strikes me as a really funny guy that not everyone "gets." I LOL'ed several times during this interview while the audience was dead silent. He reminds me a little of Bill Murray, a little of Andy Kaufman. I don't know, maybe his voice is just really endearing to me because I so loved Underdog as a small boy.
    On a side note...Where did Dick Cavett film his show? Next to the fire station? I don't know how everyone completely ignores multiple seriously distracting sirens and a barking dog.

    Why does anyone see what's going on between Jimmy Dean and Wally Cox, and think its a real feud?
    They're both obviously having a good time. And, probably very happy they can make a living by spreading their humor and banter on national TV?
    I hadnt seen Jimmy Dean on TV for decades. When I read comments about insults, I thought I must have forgotten that Jimmy Dean wasnt a nice guy, like I remembered him.
    But, no, this is the same on-screen Jimmy Dean I thought I remembered. His humorous 'country hick' expressions and delivery are as priceless as always.
    What brought me here is reading that Wally Cox and Marlon Brando were the best of friends.
    It's been many years since I heard either Cox or Dean on a talk show.

The first guest was interesting, very knowledgeable,, well informed, well abreast of multiple sociological topic,including the human nature , human element, human Error, foibles, shortcomings, attributes etc ( of course, he's a College Professor), very astute, adroit, adept,..I'm astounded and impressed by the mere fact that his recall in variable subjects can be espoused, at will, glib, verbose, without hesitation, instantaneously and get this.... he can deliver in any realm... Which spans differing time periods in almost any era., or Continent.... Child..... I've been exposed to many professors in my time.... Picking their brains no less... But this guy ' Takes The the Cake' fer sure, in my book and on my watch . Kudos...and Bravo.... He didn't get stumped Hes no Shrinking Violet, ... Like a Fireman, or a MinuteMan he's up and ready ... ever ready up and at 'em , I'm a gonna get 'em!! .... Lovely, a true World Class Rhodes Scholar. I thought Cavet's interview with Cox a bit peculiar... But guess what.... Coz was non plussed , didn't bat an eyelash, and was not perturbed not one WHIT. I've never seen him in this medium and character before now... Ever. He can hold his own with anybody.. he 'ain't scared a $#!+ that's fer sure. Now , here comes Jimmy Dean... I always loved me some Jimmy Dean, he's a real home spun, real country down HomeMrBoyMan kinda guy... A real 3 dimensional character, true-to-form, dead on, spot on non nonsense Personae.... A kinda Americana Entrepreneurrial Efforts and Decision Making Gone Good Success Story.. the back and forth banter between Cox and Dean was hilarious ... Such a Hoot . I actually got a couple of good bellylaughs out of this.... Very entertaining. Thank You Bless You whoever you are out there in TH-camLand for posting this. .

    I pay attention to Anthony stating that Dublin English spoken is like Shakespearian English of 1601. He must have been very talented in linguistics if it is true that as It is stated on the Wikipedia page on Burgess that while teaching in Malaysia he learned to speak, read and write fluently "achieving distinction in the examinations of the language set by the Colonial Office".

    He was the love of Marlon Brando's life and Brando kept his ashes in his home.

    • @nycbearff
      @nycbearff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don't know much about bisexual men, do you? And Marlon didn't "admit" that he'd had sexual relationships with men, he discussed it. He didn't think it was something he should hide, so it wasn't a secret he was forced to "admit".
      The fact that Brando and Cox were lovers before they were famous, when they both lived in Greenwich Village, isn't a big deal unless you've got personal issues about same sex couples. Yes, they both got married later and stayed best friends. Yes, when Cox died, Brando got ahold of his ashes through a subterfuge, and kept them for the rest of his life. Why would that upset you? It's a romantic story, like George Burns and Gracie Allen's life together was a romantic story.

    • @adamredfield
      @adamredfield 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I am adding my two cents on this subject since there was some argument here among posters about the nature of the relationship between Wally and Marlon. Elsewhere on this thread I mentioned how close Wally was to my family (and me). In fact, the night before Wally did this Cavett show, he spent the night on our couch. That is what he typically did when he came to New York for a short stay. Instead of a hotel, he'd come to our apartment and spend the night. In addition to Cox, my father was also close friends with Brando. The three of them, Wally, Marlon, and my father, often vacationed together. Moreover, Wally was engaged to my mother's twin sister, so she knew him pretty well also.
      So, I wrote all that so that whoever is reading this won't think I was talking through my hat. The question is, did Wally and Marlon ever take their platonic friendship into the physical? No one will ever know. If I had to answer, I would say they probably did not. Do I really care? No. If I found out that they had, it would change nothing. It is just that based on all the endless hours of conversation about both men and knowing many intimate details about both, it just never was said and when Brando did discuss it, he'd laugh it off.
      Here is my take on Marlon and Wally. I'm not sure they really were "friends." They were more like brothers, a very different kind of closeness between two men.

    I like listening to Mr. Burgess. I read Elizabethan English, the King ames Bible of 1611, still the most readable...shorter, pithy words and having read the 1611 Bible very much for 50 plus years, it is a special experience. None of the true and accurate modern English translations (though good) never reach the beauty of King ames.
    For any literature folks, the ESV, New American Standard Version are the 2 best of a small number of true versions...if one cares about accuracy...many bad versions out there.

    44:00 -- This really begs a question about the etymology of the idiom "Four Eyes". Since "eyes" sounds like the vowel " i " , and "Four F" is a failing grade for military service, due to physical inability.... and when did eye-glasses become commonplace among the U.S. population?

    *I'm a little too young to remember Dick Cavett other than knowing the name, but watching this, and given all the hype about him as a chat show host, it was just painful. Literally toe-curlingly cringeworthy, amateurish, and awkward, all in equal measure. I appreciate the dry wit side of things, but you could still cut the atmosphere with a knife in that studio. And who on earth felt these three guests, in particular, would make for good chemistry on the TV screen together? It was just awful TV in my opinion. I mean really really bad! 🤮 All that said, I still thank 'Archy M' for taking the time and trouble of uploading it.*
