I like the system we have in Norway. The parliament elects the prime minister and can submit motions of no confidence to everyone in government individually and collectively. This ensures that power lies in parliament (which represents everyone) rather than the government (which often represents less than half of the electorate)

    • @paul1979uk2000
      @paul1979uk2000 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Yeah I think that would be a better system in the EU with the European Parliament elects the leader, like you said, the power is shared over far more people.
I also think reforms are needed to the EU where the European Parliament is giving more powers at the expense of the EU Commission, whiles merging the EU Commission and President as one and making it directly election, it would help to reduce many of the Eurosceptics that say the EU isn't democratic enough, or force them to focus on other areas which could weaken there argument.
Either way, reforms are needed and I think there needs to be a big push on that after the elections.

I agree. In Italy often we have bad prime ministers (directly elected) and good presidents (elected from the parliament). I think is the best to vote for the parliament and they vote for the president. Is much more stable, democratic and the president always have the majority at the beginning of the mandate.

The major population centers (Germany, France, Spain) are currently doing politics that is foreign/unheard of in the East, South and North. i dont think strengthen the spitzenkandidaten system is good because if I'm understanding right the winner (which would likely not be a majority but a plurality) would automatically win. i think the first idea to let the parliament choose is way better because it means a majority of support is good. direct elections I feel is just unnecessary for people to have to vote again, and if the president doesn't have support of the parliament it would be chaos so why let that happen.

He is a pacifist to such a degree, that he might destroy everything, that has been created up to this point, because he doesn't want to see the world for what it is. The problem with the Spitzenkadidat is that it wont work unless there is a more fair and open primary system to elect them. Manfred Weber was never going to be Comission President because he based his entire status as candidate in a backroom deal, while other leaders like Alexander Stubb were trying for a more open primary, the same goes to the others. Only when the Spitzenkandiat have legitimacy they can be seen as the sole candidate. I personally agree that we need a Spitzenkandidat but I would prefer giving more autonomy to Parliament and leave the Council out of the decision.

Hello and thank you for this new video.
I understood that Ursula Von der Leyen was the candidate of the EPP group, the largest political group in the European Parliament for a long time.
I find it curious that UVDL has so much consensus within Renew and that she is much more contested within the EPP.
While Mr Weber should have chaired the Commission until 2024, it was Macron and Renew who pushed for UVDL to be president. Was this a tactical move to expand Renew's influence into the ranks of the EPP?
I just note that UVDL seems closer to Renew than to EPP.

I'm of the opinion that over all, the population shouldn't be expected to have the expertiece on the veriety on subject matters and aspects to' directly make such an import deccision as to who guides our government and our citizens.
A directly elected president also seems rather vulnerable to hijacking by populist figures and driver for polarisation. That's just a gut feeling I have from looking at history and contemporary elections systems.

I still don't get how the Spitzenkandidaten process is supposed to work.
Should the lead candidate of the strongest parliament group automatically become commission president, even if that group only has 20%?
    Or are coalitions allowed?
What if a party or coalition decides to depose their former leader?
And what's the councils role in all this?
    Here's another proposal:
The parliament nominates a candidate, which the council can either confirm, or they present an alternative candidate.
If parliament and council can't come to an agreement, there will be direct elections.

I agree that the Spitzenkandidaten should be a firm rule for selection. While it would be nice, directly electing a president by the people would be very complicated given language barriers. It would also make it difficult for people from small member states to get elected and would favour the larger member state candidates.

I mean... why ask this question, when the people aren't even informed. And NO not by use of social platforms. I want it send to my household, by mail, with a oversight on who the candidates are their background, so we can all check this, research this, and make a valuable choice. Without that happening, I want Ursula to be the lead candidate. Since I do not know any of the others. Simple as that. Welcome to democracy, inform your public! The latter two options would be bad.
The first one could work, allowing the parliament to vote for compromise candidates.
So the greens for instance are unlikely to win with their candidate, but they might be able to make deals with other parties in return for their support for a candidate.
Parliamentarism is just usually a better system.

I think the key problem besetting the EU in this area is the legitimacy questions raised by democratic deficit. European election turn out is disgraceful for an institution that claims to be based on "values" of which democracy is central. The EU must have clear connections with the people t governs, to win their consent. When less than 50% are interested enough to vote, then something is blatantly wrong. The reality is a system of very handsomely rewarded jobs for the boys in the club, with a highly protected and closed shop bureaucracy further cossetting them. Democratically removing any incompetent or corrupt commissioner is almost impossible. How can that be democratic in terms of accountability to electors?
But what would direct elections mean> Just direct election for the Commission president? Direct elections for all Commissioners? Or the present system of appointment and anointment from on high? More democracy in the EU is what I'd like to see, but short of firm federation with reduction in national powers, how is direct democratic accountability going to be established? The ever closer union idea, always an exclusive and airy-fairy one, since nothing prevents member states who really want to unify from just going ahead and doing it regardless! - seems further away as electors choose regularly not to vote in large numbers, and when they do vote, they express obsessions about national identities as a major concern. Were heading for more nationalism, not less, I fear, bolstered by the deliberately blinkered paranoias of peoples being "just like us" or not like us. The retreat is for those privileged to belong nationally to this club with its identity obsessions, within the walls of a fortress they perceive as being besieged.

The more pro-EU option it's Renew Europe's one of course due to its openess. Put the blame on mame EPP because we cannot vote (again) through European lists but for national ones. So as a Spaiard if if want to vote Renew Europe I will have to vote a crashed party (Ciudadanos) and suffer (again) the uneuropean fight between the "fachas" del PP and "progres" del PSOE.

Honestly I dont care, I dont regconise the EU president as a legal head of state/authority, no do I regconise him/her to be a representative of The Netherlands. Though Im going to vote for the EU elections for the first times since our Europhile government and the EU ignored the Dutch and French referendums back in 2005. When the EU constitution by majority votes were rejected; and us usual ignored when democracy doesnt do what the EU wants. For the first time in history its possible to make the anti EU/Euro block in Brussel the second largest political block, and thats worth voting for. I dont know on which Dutch party Im going to vote on, but it will be a anti EU/Euro party for sure.
