On Telus AND Rogers (i.e. the Carriers used where Linus lives and works), I STILL can use my old Motorola Startac AND Razr phones from 1996 and 2004. The Razor uses the Edge (2.5g) network and for SOME REASON the Startac which uses AMPS (i.e. the ANALOG Advanced Mobile Phone System) mobile phone service STILL WORK! The Moto Razr still works perfectly fine and I can even access 1.5g (Edge) data and voice anywhere in the Metro Vancouver area (which is geographically about the same square area as greater Los Angeles!) AND in some areas near downtown Vancouver and Surrey, I STILL get Startac Analog AMPS voice service! WTH? I thought AMPS was discontinued BUT it seems it's STILL Active as I'm getting analog AMPS tower voice service in 2019! My first phone in 1987 was some fancy brick phone which literally WAS the size of a brick! In those days it was $2.00 PER MINUTE for cell phone voice service, so one hour of talking to a friend would cost you $120 CAN (85 euros) YIKES! No wonder my first phone bill was like $2000+ CAN! These days, for that $120 per month amount I get 20 gigs a month 4G data plus unlimited voice and text only messages on a business-plan provider!
Since I'm IN the Vancouver, BC, Canada Area and use Telus, I'm STILL surprised that my 1996 phone still works on AMPS service which I thought Telus discontinued YEARS ago! For some dumb reason, I can make a voice call in downtown Vancouver on a decades old AMPS phone! .
man, it looks really nice, I really wish there was a phone like this right now, the e-ink, the vintage mushy buttons, flip screen. Despite growing up as a 17 year old with a iPhone X, I seriously have a fond with these phones.
It actually still surprises me that cellphones from around from 2001 and earlier had yet to adopt colour LCD screens (given that devices like the Game Boy Color had been on the market for a year or two then (or even a decade, with devices like the Atari Lynx or SEGA GameGear). Guess battery-life was a tad more important to us back than it is nowadays.
It just wasn't a necessity. Wouldn't have thought to have a color screen because there weren't almost any pictures to display. My phone had Snake, the game, on it.

My life is a lie
I don't think I've ever seen Linus so excited!
@The BFI xd
He's more exited on the new Floatplane video where he disassembles/destroys his $50000 RED 8K Helium camera in order to water-cool it.
He overly excitable... over unexciting things usually.
My main takeaway from this video is that Linus is young enough that his first cell phone had a keyboard. 😑
chanm01 didn’t they all have? Only new smartphones don’t have keyboards as far as I know
PlatinumBladeStudios well there was also the flip phones that just had a num pad
Amazing Lagann flip phones were popular around the same time Linus said this came out
My father's first phone was a Nokia 5160 lol

Oh, Linus... So young... My first cell phone was one of those Nokia bricks. Around 2003 I had a Motorola Timeport P8767, which my friends nicknamed "the Porsche"
17 years later and the meaning of WAP has totally changed
When you're worried about limited mobile data, but Linus saves the day. :D
Lucky i have unlimited data :D
Same bro 22 GB of fast data then the rest is slow
One day i was wondering how 30gb of data can cost over 100$ in America. In finland you can get unlimited, 4g plan for 20$😂

I got my first phone in '99, a BT Cellnet Philips C12. Fantastic thing about that phone was that if you pulled the battery whilst a text was sending, it would still send but you wouldn't get charged for it.
Atleast it has backlit keyboard.......
HOW THE HELL IS LINUS THAT OLD ????? HE LOOKS LIKE A 19 YEAR OLD !!!!??!?!??
I honestly thought he was on his forties.
He's only 32. Is that old? cause if it is then I feel old. I'm not 32, but i'm close.
I definitely feel old
@@williamwinder3466 I turn 31 next month. It really is crazy. But think about how old 30 seemed when you were still 15. When you are young it seems like that is forever. When you hit 30. 15 seems like it was just the other day.
he said he was 16 in 2003 that is not old and the phone is not that old to i find one on ebay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorola-V100-Blue-Mobile-Phone-very-Rare/183201961019?hash=item2aa7b0143b:g:dG8AAOSwZbha5kfo&frcectupt=true

REVIVE LINUS CAT TIPS
Give it to us Linus!
He can't because he doesn't have any cats anymore.
They should get new ones *from a shelter this time instead of paying a grand for them* when the kids are old enough to take care of them! (as Linus apparently ain't no time for that)
He doesn't have his cats anymore? What happened?

I had this phone too. It is a amazing texting phone at the time. Was offered from my network operator (in Europe) with almost free texting plan. I had it for over a year. Just loved it...
4:47 JerryRigEverything wants to know your location
It Still working in India...
2G is Available here 😂
On Telus AND Rogers (i.e. the Carriers used where Linus lives and works), I STILL can use my old Motorola Startac AND Razr phones from 1996 and 2004. The Razor uses the Edge (2.5g) network and for SOME REASON the Startac which uses AMPS (i.e. the ANALOG Advanced Mobile Phone System) mobile phone service STILL WORK! The Moto Razr still works perfectly fine and I can even access 1.5g (Edge) data and voice anywhere in the Metro Vancouver area (which is geographically about the same square area as greater Los Angeles!)
AND in some areas near downtown Vancouver and Surrey, I STILL get Startac Analog AMPS voice service!
@@StarGateSG7 actually EDGE is "2.5g", an evolution over "2g" GPRS and CSD.
@@StarGateSG7 it's Canada you can't discontinue a product that you still use when you barely even have fibre

Why is everyone posting the same video? MrMobile, iJustine, Jerryrigeverything, etc.
I was thinking the same. o.O
Colour lcds back in the day were power hogs......and there was no need on early cell phones, they only had text against a background.
It just wasn't a necessity. Wouldn't have thought to have a color screen because there weren't almost any pictures to display. My phone had Snake, the game, on it.
Yeah it wasn't till like 2008 when smartphones became a thing that they started using colour screens.
The Ericsson T86 had a color screen if my memory serves me, year 2000.
No. Flip phones had color . flip phones with color came out early. I had one in 2006.
I paid $70 so its not worth it
