    Hey Stig you got the IRS concept a bit wrong, the IRS itself only computes the inertial position by integrating data from accelerometers and gyroscopes starting from the initial position set at the gate, you can see it as being in a car blindfolded only knowing where you started from and figuring out where you are only by feeling how the car is turning or accelerating/braking, the more you go on the less accurate your positon estimate will be, and that's where the drift comes from.
    GPS position on the other hand doesn't accumulate errors because every second it feeds instant measurements from different satellites but it has a bigger uncertainty spread, and this is fixed with differential WAAS stations that make it precise enough to fly instruent approaches off GPS alone.
    In the end planes use a "tightly coupled Kalman Filter" algorithm, that in short words uses the coordinates both IRS and GPS think they are to calculate a new position that has a higher accuracy probability, and every second it feeds GPS data into the IRS to correct for the drift, like doing a new position initialization every second.
    Sorry if I wasn't clear, I'm an guidance and navigation engineer but english is not my first language.

      Yes, the three IRs determine position based on their movement through space (inertial). Along with the Air Data information (barometric), they make up the three ADIRS. The position from each of the three IRS is combined to generate a MIX IRS position. The IRSs also compute a combined GPIRS position using any of the two GPS systems in a Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR). A combination of the MIX IRS and GPS position is used by each FMGCs to determine their own position (FMGC1 and FMGC2). The FMGCs always choose whatever position they determine to be the most accurate. The FMGCs also continually measure a vector (called a bias) between the MIX IRS position and the GPIRS position. If the FMGCs lose the GPIRS position information, the FMGCs memorizes the bias and use it to compute the Flight Management (the FM part of FMGC) position. Kind of complicated but as you always say, there is a ton of redundancy in aircraft systems.

    Stig, never worry about boring us or being repetitive. I love your videos and whether your moving airplanes or at the gate or in the hangar, I am always learning something and reminded of how lucky you are to have the job you have and for pursuing your dreams. Aviation is made for people like yourself and the fact that you can share it with all of us is amazing! I'm "disabled" and although I dont like that word, its the one most appropriate to describe my situation. I was injured pretty badly while deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and so I wasnt able to pursue my dream of being a commercial airline pilot and I am not able to do any techincal job like maintenance or anything related to aviation because of how sever my injuries are. I dont say that for you or anyone to feel sorry for me, so please dont. I mention this because I look forward to your videos and dream of what could have been. So, keep em coming pal. You make this old veteran feel apart of the aviation world I love. 🙏

    Stig, I am impressed by the ordinariness of the tools required to maintain both the Boeings and the Airbuses. You use ordinary wrenches, screwdrivers gauges and other simple tools and most of your repairs are fast. The plane's computers & your routine inspections lead you right to the faults.

    • @StigAviation
      @StigAviation  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      When it comes to simple things, it’s all nuts and bolts. It all works the same way so 80% of the tooling is exactly what you would have in your toolbox at home. There’s a few variations here and there, for example, all of my sockets are 12 point.

    I am so happy that I found your channel. I haven't flown for years and always wished I could have become a pilot. So I love aviation. Really miss the days where I could sit with my daddy at the gate and watch planes✈ take off and land. Being raised a lady that can do anything, I could have been an aviation mechanic from watching your channel. I grew up a farm girl so I can repair🔧 a lot and change tires too.😊 Too old now.💀 Lol. I really enjoy these videos especially "what is in cargo?". Even my husband likes that part. Thank you for talking about President Trumps plane. I knew it was getting an overhaul, but didn't know any details. Lovely engines and paint job.
    Do all airlines have maintenance look at the plane each time they come in like American? I certainly feel safer flying in the future from watching your video's. Thank you for taking the extra time it takes to post these videos. Keep up the good work. Oh, I was watching planes take off and land on another channel, the holy moly guys,when the guys saw you and you waved👋 at their camera. That was great. Stay safe!!!🛫🛫🛫❤🤍💙🇺🇸

      First of all, I just want to say big thank you for being here and I am so happy that you’re enjoying the adventures. I am sure you are very skillful and handy person seeing that you work on a farm. To answer your question most places the aircraft get looked at just like I do here. There are some stations where there is no maintenance, but not to worry because pilots also do this type of walk around inspection prior to each flight

    Hey Stig,
    I just wanted to say thank you so much. I am currently a student getting my Airframe and Powerplant license, almost completely done with my airframe. Without telling my whole life story, I wanted to work in aviation, specifically as a pilot, but I couldn't keep up with the cost after my private license so I switched to the maintenance track. I had a pretty poor attitude, but you have changed that. My instructor introduced you to my class during our landing gear section due to your amazing video a while back working with the tiebolts that stripped and clogged up the brakes. I have since watched more of your videos personally and have been super inspired by your positivity at work. While I am aiming to work on helicopters and not in the airlines, I am so inspired by how much you love your job and the fantastic information you give that helps me understand systems even better. So, again, thank you so much for being awesome! Keep up the great work and keep having fun!

    I’m doing the walkaround right along with you. I love hearing the APUs running, the packs screaming away, and I can almost smell the jet fuel!
    It's an amazing career. I’m coming to the end of mine. I’m in training now. I got to see the world and I have a lot of great memories. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but we need more people to join the field. People like you need to promote aircraft maintenance. I really appreciate that you show a very positive side of the job. Just wanted to add that the small metal medallions on the fuselage are really helpful for the pilot performing the pre and post flight walk around.
    If there is a dent with a medallion, we know that the damage is preexisting and already documented. If we spot damage without a medallion, that warrants further investigation.

    Hey Stig!
    37:30. Just wanted to add a small correction. The Ram Air doors on the 737 are not simply spring loaded to close in flight. It’s a bit more complicated.
    The doors are actuated with AC power from the associated AC transfer buss and controlled with power from the associated side DC buss. The CBs for these doors are on the P6-4 panel behind the FO seat, rows A and B.
    The PSEU uses the Air-Ground sensing and the pressure differential either side of the heat exchanger (to detect blockage or dirty heat exchanger) to determine when to close the deflector doors.
    In the cockpit, the two blue lights [RAM DOOR FULL OPEN] on the air conditioning panel normally extinguish in flight. If they remain illuminated, that is the notification to the crew that there might be an issue with blockage or a dirty heat exchanger. There is no action that can be taken in flight, hence the blue instead of amber light.
    The blue Ram door status lights have been removed from the Max and are only found on the NG.

    • @StigAviation
      @StigAviation  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      But i wasn’t talking about the ram air door for the pack intake my friend. I was talking about the Deflector door.

    • @Stepclimb
      @Stepclimb 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@StigAviation
      Ah yes, not sure why I thought you were talking about the ram air doors when you were clearly pointing to the deflector door!
      I did some digging in the systems manuals.
      It turns out the Deflector door is also electrically actuated based on air-ground logic.
      It does not modulate. It’s either open or closed.
