I remember this one clearly. I stood near the back of the Fratton End and was left in awe of Peter Beardsley. What a player.

My all-time favourite goal from Peter Beardsley. There were so many superb goals, but for skill and composure this is arguably his finest.

I was there. I'm a Geordie and was living in Pompey at the time, used to drink along the Albert Road in Southsea, and enjoyed some decent curries there too. This match was an enjoyable day for us, about a dozen of my mates from the Toon were down for the weekend and slept on the floor in my digs.
I was in the Fratton End the Saturday before this, when Pompey played Southampton in the cup. It was so packed I remember I managed to get my cigarettes out of my jacket pocket but couldn't get my lighter out of my jeans. Guy in front of me gave me a light and I gave him a cigarette. Poor fella was facing me and couldn't turn back around to see the match.
Neil Webb came close to an equaliser late on; if he had scored there could have been some serious injuries on the terraces, they were so full. Either the ground wasn't up to the 36,000 capacity or they sold more tickets than they let on.
I moved back to Newcastle in 86 and have only been to Pompey once since then. I'm going back for a reunion with friends in late 2021, covid permitting, and I'm looking forward to the Gales ales and good curry.

    Thanks for uploading.
There were chances both ends that appeared to stick in the mud, particularly Hateley’s shot in the 2nd half. On today’s billiard tables that would have been a definite goal.
I think the score line flattered us a bit but loved Beardsley’s first goal, what composure!
    Thanks again.

Cheers for uploading this Mike. Was at this game as a kid. I'd watched Pompey go up from Div3 under Bobby Campbell, my first paying games were just before the March TW, when he bought Dillon & Morgan, and we went up as Champs.
I'd always been a fan of Keegan (despite his background), and remember thinking I'd be seeing him past his best - but he was brilliant. Pompey gave their all though. Most of the 82/3 side, only Hateley (& Wood) added to the other 9. Doyle, Dillon & Webb in midfield.
Amazing to think so many past, present and future England players there... McDermott, Keegan, then Waddle & Beardsley (both them also showed well). Beardsley taking Hateley's place just 2 and a bit years later in the England team (alongside Lineker) at Mexico '86. But Hateley went on tour with England that summer (of '84), and got the 'other' goal vs Brazil (along with Barnes' solo special) at the Maracana. Webbie showing what he could do here - another future England player.. And thought young Paul Wood really showed up well too.
Campbell was gone before we played Swansea in the last game of this season (5v0?), if I remember right, they'd been relegated, Bally (RIP) was put in charge, and Biley got a hat-trick. I remember Nicky Morgan scoring too, Hateley with the other? Campbell went on to manage Chelsea I think.
I think we'd lost 2v4 up at St.James' Park in the reverse fixture, and this game not long after the Moran last seconds goal in the Cup vs Southampton (booo!).

Imagine if Klopp had to send his players out on pitch like that, we wouldn’t hear the end of it?!!!
    LOL.
