Right! Exactly. This is one of those things where as a DM I couldnt leave the result up to a dice roll. Doing all that and then getting a nat 1 wouldnt be like wow how exciting and spontaneous! It would feel like absolute shit for everyone.
Sam is always at his best when he’s being honest with his characters. I know he likes to joke more than anything else, and sometimes that helps a lot, very few things hit as hard as Sam being serious and honest.
Sam is pretty consistently the best roleplayer at the table. He may distract from it with his humor, but he's always so entrenched in the characters in ways we often don't understand til much later.
One of my favorite comic books of all time was (I think it was maybe a quarterly) X-Force where Strong Guy bears his soul to a puppy, and the final panel is him in tears. It's always the people who joke the hardest and make you laugh the most who are feeling the most emotions underneath.
Oh yeah Sam just fits right in to a D20 sesh. Actually what I want just came to me... this crew as a fantasy high side quest but it's Fabian either making like vacation friends or is forced to tutor a new freshmen party.
Only if he can bring his hubby along lol. Don't want to turn it into a CR show by any means, but those two with a few of the other classic D20 crew would be amazing
What i love is when he says he isn't a very good actor he is being genuine in saying he isn't good at faking emotion, he is trying to say that he personally feels the emotions of his characters because he's so deeply into them that it isn't an act anymore.
Great actors often put themselves into those situations "for real". Like here, Sam was likely thinking about and picturing his wife. What if this situation was his wife. It can lead to REAL emotion
Iirc he said he really fell in love with her for that show (right after this cut off). Didn't have to think about his wife. He was Quay, and he loved Laerryn.
i've always loved that Sam is the player that came into DnD as the guy who just wanted to have fun and do stupid stuff with his friends but when he wants to role play. Goddamn can he roleplay and fucking hit us.
Makes brennan almost cry everytime?! I legit cry everytime... including this time, this is one of the best speeches ive ever heard much less just from CR. Sam is always the best ❤❤❤
For a dude who makes the most silly characters he can get the most intense emotions out of me. I will never be able to watch THAT counterspell in the final battle of campaign 1 without sobbing like a baby, and I can’t even think about several of his moments of Calamity without tearing up.
Knot the brave. Comic relief on the surface … then literally heart stomping his friends with “her” unbridled emotion that they know nothing about their mother and have never helped him or even tried to … Sam and Liam always have the most depth to their characters. Liam’s one shot where he does the robot voice … EPIC
I just finished watching EXU Calamity, my first entry into the CR univerise. The whole thing was beyond words, but hearing this right after Elmenore's "I'd rather my heart be broken and yours remain whole," its such fucking incredible storytelling.
It’s almost as if Sam is a vastly talented and overqualified actor/director. With an Emmy. He’s so good it makes you wonder why he was never Phoenix Wright or something. Oh yeah that’s right, HE WAS!

The Calamity is inevitable and the city is gonna crumble. Loquatius (Sam's character) addresses the city for the last time in a last ditch attempt to get as many people as possible to flee and save themselves.
It's from a very short (well 20hours over 4 episodes) story they did called ExU Calamity and some of the characters had done some things in their back stories that 'helped' bring about the destruction of their city and the massive war that was to come. That being said, the group were trying to do their best to minimize the damage and this was Sam's character trying to give credit to his friends while getting as much of the general population to safety. The game also involved Sam and Abbria's characters being divorced which started as a funny bit but they both got into it sooo hard that it became much much more than that and their relationship was a really emotional heart to the story.
It was a good speech for the party...but he kind of forgot to tell people what the hell was going on which was suppose to be the point of making the speech. :P
He does in the full speach, he tells the public to get off the city and tells the government officials to go down with the ship, saving so many lives. That bit didn't fit in this short and I wanted to focus on the emotional side of the scene.

I really didnt like it. It wasnt very genuine. Even when he was supposedly dropping the facade of being a anchor he still just sounded like he was reading a script. There are so many great moments in sams dnd career but honestly this one was just kind of flat, rushed, pushed on as something great.
