Europe is populated by the rubble and ruins of the Roman Empire. But if you want to get closer to the Roman way of life you have to come to Brazil. In "the last flower of Lazio, uncultivated and beautiful" (as a Brazilian poet said) authoritarianism, militarism, corruption, the rigid hierarchy of society, the existence of families that have commanded politics for centuries, daily violence, promiscuity between public and private, the greed of judges, contempt for the poor and the immense rural properties that function as a reserve of value and foundation of political power, all these Brazilian things are typically Roman things.

@@jimmorrison7417 I am not a great admirer of the USA, but I must admit that there is an essential difference between it and Brazil. My ancestors lived within the Roman Empire since the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. Americans are descendants of people whose Romanization process was incipient (the barbarian tribes that existed in Britain) or non-existent, such as those who invaded England in successive waves during the Dark Ages. This explains the immense social differences between Americans and Brazilians.

Vikings didn’t stablish colonies in America. It is said they went and returned but not stayed, nor conquered nor interbreed with local population. So in terms of discovering they did not do anything. They didn’t bring to Europe new foods. They did not contribute anything to the indigenous people there. They didn’t alter the course of lives of anybody here and there. It is as if they hadn’t gone. Colombus did and the rest is history.

And no one has mentioned the huge advances taking place in China and east Asia at the same time
as Rome was building the west…

Thank you for the information about the slaves. I shall not read St Paul's Letter to the Ephesians in the same way again.

Make no mistake, former slaves are nowadays employees. Both of them can enjoy life, get married, live in a rented house and get gifts based on their performances. Even today it is more strikingly similar to ancient times, for there has not been a more undifferentiated mass of rewarded people since feudalism, regardless of age, gender, education or experience….

@Kelly Jordan As you like, but honestly, I can't imagine anything more stupid and humiliating than fighting for income equality... The only person I'm equal to is myself.

There's one big difference between a slave and an employee: An employee can quit his/her job and find work with a new employer. A slave doesn't have that luxury.

@@ramonvalencia5719 An employee may quit and die of hunger and/or cold, instead a slave was provided with food and shelter all his life. Tell me Ramon as a latin, do you like the way you're treated by your boss, or maybe you are a boss, aren't you? Back here, they say romanians don't want to be free, instead they want to be masters of slaves. Does it apply in your country too?

Thankyou Yair again. I wear my Star of David and if people comment I find out how many people do support Israel but they feel afraid. The fallen heroes are so young. Look after yourself and family. Here’s hoping Ramadan may be peaceful for the Gazans and they get some food and help soon.

i wish she would have said most agricultural workers were slaves and most of the middlemen were freedmen (ex-slaves). Only a few made lots of money.
