    Born and raised in Honolulu but living in the San Francisco Bay area. I can vouch that this is the authentic recipe. I learned it in high school as 1 to 1 to 1 proportions of shoyu, water and sugar along with ginger (but a bit of garlic doesn't hurt). I also thicken the sauce with a cornstarch slurry, and if I'm feeling ambitious, broil the chicken as well. I like to sprinkle white sesame seeds and sliced green onions as garnish, too. So glad you shared this with everyone. Nicely done! I'll keep an eye out for your macaroni salad recipe.

    I spent the 90s in Hawaii and Shoyu chicken was one of my favorites. Thanks for reminding me about this dish. Had a friend make shoyu katsu chicken which was awesome.

    Hey cuz
    That reminds me so much of my mom‘s cooking. My mother is also Hawaiian and Portuguese. I forgot how easy it is to make. Thank you for showing this recipe.

    A little bit similar to our Filipino chicken adobo. Serve with white rice. ❤ Will give it a try.

    I just wanted to say, I found your channel by googling the recipe for Shoyu Chicken(I am in the process of kitchen remodeling and needed to learn how to use an Instant Pot) Your recipe was perfect, perfectly explained and I just love your bubbling personality! Since then, I also tried the LocoMoco, Beef Stew and Stroganoff and I am not stopping now! I hope you will continue to share these recipes, we especially enjoy the Hawaiian ones as that is where my DH was born and raised!

    Now this recipe looks yummy. I’m definitely making this, the only thing I’ll do different is stain the shoyu before I ad the cornstarch. Thank you for sharing.

      You can definitely strain the shoyu - I'm just usually too hungry by that point to wait any longer. ☺ Let me know how it goes when you make it!

    A much simpler recipe than Chinese Soy Sauce chicken. I like the tip to broil so that the skin is crispy.

      Yes, its simplicity is the beauty of Shoyu Chicken! I don't think I've ever had Chinese Soy Sauce Chicken - do you have a go-to or favorite recipe?

    Thanks for this recipe, can't wait to try it. If you'd like to suck up a little bit to followers outside the US, a wonderful idea would be to after edit in a measurement conversion of the cup measurements you use to deciliters. We will love you for it.

    When it was my turn to cook at the Fire station in Honolulu, this was usually one of the dishes I prepared. One pot simplicity, and the leftovers taste even better. Important when your meal might get interrupted.

    I’m not a huge fan of thighs, do you think skin on breasts would work or would it get too dry?

    • @playswellwithbutter
      @playswellwithbutter  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! You can def try with skin on breasts - you might want to slice them in half crosswise to make pieces that are a little closer to the size of chicken thighs. They might not stay quite as juicy as thighs, but I bet it'll be delicious nonetheless. Please let me know if you end up trying!
