Thank you for the great recommendations. For some reason I was having trouble finding solid printing solutions at reasonable prices. $15-$18 per print is insane for what I was needing. CatPrint seems to have the printing prices in the ballpark I was searching, especially at bulk. Ordered a sample pack from them as I type this. :D

Also found some old comic book strips I started in my late teens before I lost a friend to cancer (he was a comic book artist). Now got all my art together and I have enough for my own exhibition but I kinda want to get prints done .
Thanks Rachael, CatPrint does a great job and the good thing is you can start with very small orders, so it's a good way to see how your art looks printed and who people react to it, before dropping a lot of cash on a big print run. In What format do you send to Catprints your art. Also, I'm thinking a 300 ppi file would be adequate for your larger prints, right? Oh and thanks for all the advice.
I usually send them JPGs at 300 dpi, I wouldn’t go any lower. Sometimes if I have multiple files that I need the same number of prints from. I will combine the JPGs into a PDF file. It make the ordering process a bit easier.
Great videos, would it be possible in the future to make a video on where to get reasonably priced 11x17 scanners? Anything past 8.5x11 size causes the price to jump dramatically and was wondering if their are oversized scanners out there that don't cost a arm and a leg, thanks!
Thanks! I may have to do some more research on that, but my scanner has been acting up and I searched around for one and you're right they're are pretty pricey. I think our best bet is to find one second hand, on Craig's list or ebay or something.

I guess it depends on what you're starting with. I usually design at 12" x 18" 600 dpi and those look great at 20" x 30" I have blown up a couple of my older pieces that were 300 dpi to 20" x 30" and they look pretty good as well.

I'm actually doing a bit of research on what sort of paper I should use for my mini comics and where I can send my material off for printing that may have that right sort of paper that I am wanting. what would you say would be the most cost effective stock that closely matches the same stock used for actual comic books? Maybe you could do an episode about that?
Well there's not really a standard stock for comics, and what is most common also has to do with the time period for a long time comics used newsprint, then some started using Baxter paper. If your talking about mini comics They are mostly don on standard copy paper . A lot of modern comics use a glossy stock that I don't particularly car for. @@ScottSerkland thanks for your input :) I have some old comics from the mid 90s and I find the paper stock they used back then to be rather attractive. any rec for best printing for digital drawings? mine capture the look of pencil, charcoal, color pencil tools etc... (as opposed to photography or illustration look)
I’m pretty happy with Catprint. I think for the kind of work your doing it might come down to the paper stock. They have a few options. I would think more of a flat linen paper might work.
I don’t remember exactly and don’t have the info at hand. But the finish was matte and the weight was similar to a photograph in order to match my older prints. Thea of course are all personal preferences.
I'm trying to understand how this works. I have artwork on paper that I am trying to get printed on t shirts, hats, and other accessories, and get a company to put it on the shirts, etc for me? How would I go about doing that step by step? And where do I place the picture where I want it, and what size I need it to be? I'm just a little confused how to go about doing it?...SBN RESONATE
That whole process is a little too involved to cover here in the comment section, but your first step would be to photograph or scan your physical artwork, depending on what company you use to do your printing they should have a template with the correct sizes for each product they offer
Do you send in your artwork as PNG or PDF CYMK to catprint? I know they accept PNG according to their site but then the printing is no longer CMYK it would be RGB
I save my files as CMYK JPG files and then place them multiple page PDFs. So if I have three prints that I want 12 copies of I will place all three prints in a PDF and have them print 12 copies. If I have 2 other prints that I only need 2 copies I will place them in a PDF and have them make two copies. Hope that answers your question.
Enjoyed this video! Very informative, I'd like to have my designs printed on gift wrapping paper, how do I go about doing this? What types of companies print gift wrap paper? Thanks!
Unfortunately no. They are not archival. Which is really the only major drawback in my opinion. But I find most of the people I sell to don’t even know what that means and it’s not a deal breaker for them.
Speaking of your 3d art. Would love to see a tutorial on that. Just curious what color codes you use for red and blue. I used 100% cyan and 100% red. Ordered through catprint and when i looked at my print in my hands it looked like.....well nothing lol. I didnt realize how hard it would be to nail down 3d art when it comes to printing it.
Great suggestion Case! I've been wanting to do a video on that, It's been a while since I've done a 3-D print and I need to re-familiarize myself with the process. I'm going to put that on my to do list.
Honestly, I’m not sure. If your are talking about being alerted if you’re resolution is to low. They might. I’m pretty careful to check that before uploading my designs.
They look amazing! Thank you for this video. :) I make mixed media artwork, and I want to get my designs on print this year, but I am struggling trying to get a digital copy to send to print. I tried scanning it, but the quality is not there. I am not great with photoshop. If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it!
Typically what traditional artist have done in the past is to either find a photographer who is experienced in photographing artwork or find a company that can scan large pieces of artwork. If you can get the right lighting you my be able to photograph it yourself but I might be best left to a professional.
Another question if you don't mind explaining how you actually get the original to be printed. Do you photograph a large piece and have it as a digital file compressed to send? I have a few 18 24 canvas paintings that I want printed off to actual size. Could you please explain how you figured this out?
Sure, so most of my work is either digital or 11" x17" original comic book art that I scan in on a large format printer. For what you are talking about you would have to photograph. Unfortunately I'm not very experienced with photographing artwork. you could attempt to do it yourself, I'm sure there are video online that will help with the kind of lighting and camera set up you need, or you may need to hire a professional photographer who specializes in shooting artwork.
Awesome video! Which paper type would you recommend for overall general prints? I got the medium letter paper:gloss, and looking for something a bit more sturdy, but not cardstock. Thanks!
Thanks! Personally I like the 100 lb Heavy Letter Paper with a matte or stain finish. It's about the thickness of a photograph. Some people like the cardstock but I prefer something heavy enough to convey quality and light enough where it can be rolled up if need be.
I'm planning to print 60x60 inch artwork using a premium paper my question is how much will it probably cost and what type of paper is recommended. I'm looking looking for a thick matte type of paper. Also, if I want to frame it at that size any recommendation and pricing point will be? Thanks!
Honestly 20"x 30" is the largest I've ever printed so I don't know if I'm going to be much help to you, sorry. I'm not even sure if CatPrint can print that big. I think Costco can do canvas prints up to 40" x 60" and that can also frame them. I've had canvas prints done there before and they look really good, I just don't know about 60" x60"
Really. I would contact them back. I'm sure they will correct the issue. I've used them many times and many of my friends have used them and been completely satisfied. The only time I had an issue was once when they forgot to cut some prints down to a custom size, but they corrected the issue without a problem
for my larger prints I don't go with card stock in case it needs to be rolled up, for that I use Heavy Letter Paper Matte. For 8.5 X 11 or smaller I use Heavy Cardstock Matte.
Unfortunately, if you start at a low resolution there really isn't a way to increase it. ( you can lower your resolution but you can't do the opposite.) 300 DPI and up is required for most printing. So need to start at 300 dpi and at the size you want to print when you first set up your file. I sometimes go larger just in case I decide later on I want to print something larger. The only exception to this rule is if you are doing vector art in a program like Adobe Illustrator, Vector art is all mathematical information and can be scaled up or down without any loss of quality.
I mean I know artists in the past that get $10 off a future purchase with their referral link and the person being referred also gets a $10 discount on a future purchase.
Oh, sorry Maddy, I have a few other affiliate programs set up, but I haven’t looked into what programs Cat Print offers. Cat Print did reach out to me and offered me a very nice discount on my next order after they saw this video. I do appreciate you asking though. Thanks.
Wow, really? That's pretty amazing, hopefully hes still able to earn a decent living charging 80's prices. I know a lot of illustrators who are still billing for what Illustrators made in the 80's.
Hey who do you use for printing your comics? Im getting ready to print up my comic and I'm looking for a decent printer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hey Theo, I use Ka-Blam for print on demand comic book printing they can do short print runs. another option would be Amazon Create Space especially for larger black and white comics, but it can get pricey for color comics.
Hey thanks man! I appreciate you gettin back to me quickly! Have a great show in Phoenix, I will not be there this year due to my books not being ready.
I'm not sure if they accept physical art. Most of my prints are digital or at least finished up digitally even if they start off hand drawn. If your work is traditional I would think you would have to scan it of photograph it first.
Hi Scott! new sub here. What paper stock did you use for your medium size prints? I have a paper sample pack from Cat Print and was wondering which paper you prefer? They look fantastic.
Hey Lucy, Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I used Heavy Letter Paper Matte. This is a bit thinner than most people like. I use to use Costco for my prints so I was trying to match the style and thickness of their Fuji photo paper as best I could. For my smaller prints I went with Heavy Card stock Matte. I wanted those to be a little thicker because its easier for people to flip through them at conventions. Hope that helps.
Serkworks Art No worries! I used Office Max to print my posters and the quality is great but they don't drop ship. I want to try out Cat Print because your designs look great on their paper. Thanks for your help! 🌟
Good question, I don't really know the answer. I haven't framed any of these print behind glass. I would imagine if you have two print framed one shimmer and one not side by side there would be a slight difference.
Sorry if I've overlooked a video or comment about it somewhere on your channel, but I'd love to see how you go about packaging different sized prints (and originals, if you sell them). I'm just starting out with getting prints made, and so nervous that they'll get damaged in shipping! TwT
Great topic Jessica! I will put that on my short list of videos to make. I know exactly how you feel. I get worried every time I send out a package that its going to get damaged.
Unfortunately no. For me it wasn't a big deal to switch from the archival photo prints I was getting at Costco to Cat Print. because I sell most of my work at comic conventions, where a lot of people are selling cheap colored copies. So the Cat Print prints were much higher quality and people were more concerned with the prints looking good and the paper stock than being archival. I don't think I've ever been asked about the archivability of a print at a con. However if you're are selling higher quality prints of fine art or something I can see where that would be important.
I really need to do a video on it. the short answer is that you need to create a red and blue layer for every separate item you want to pop out or have depth. and you offset the red and blue layers at different intervals depending on how much you want the effect to stand out.
Thanks! The hard part is to play a character and still be genuine and true to who I really am. I Hope I'm doing a good job of that. Thanks for subbing!
Good info and review of catprint, I still do the print shop thing for my 11x17 because its faster and cheaper, but and other sizes I have switched to catprint. Also, glad to see I'm not the only one who tried eating those foam things. :p
Yeah, it’s a certainly a cheeper option, but I’m not sold on the quality of most print shop prints. It’s funny I was dog-sitting for my girlfriend and she loved to eat those packing peanuts ( the dog not my girlfriend)
Hi there. So if I wanted to send a painting I painting from online...Costco can take that painting I send by email and print it for me. Also can you tell me what they charged you for lets say a dozen of your largest paintings and also what would they charge for lets say a dozen card size paintings and would they put the card size order on a nice card paper.
Hi Deb, I was a little unsure about what you where asking. Did you want to know what Costco charges for these services or what Cat Print charges? I know Cat print can do all of these things and they have an instant quote generator on their site. As far as Costco goes I think I pay around $4 for a 12 X 19 print and I don't think the price decreases at a dozen. I don't now if they do any printing an cardstock. They may send that stuff out because I believe all of their in store printing is on standard photo paper.
I'll send you one of my paintings in your message so you can get a better idea what I mean. Say I wanted my painting in a 22 x 32 can they do that...either of them.
I think thats the first time I've got tim Robbins, I get Mark Ruffalo and Jon Favreau all the time, but I like all three of those guys so I don't mind.
I’ve had people tell me I look like Jon Favreau or Mark Ruffalo, but Tim Robbins is a first. I’ve seen Shawshank about fifty times but never knew that’s how you spelled Dufresne, had to look it up just to be sure.

@@ScottSerkland Thanks so much for the answer. You're the best. Love your content!
Love your work .. awesome job.
Do correct the catprint link as it didn't turn into a hyperlink.
Thanks, and thanks for mentioning the broken link, I'll look into that.
Enjoyed this video! Very informative, I'd like to have my designs printed on gift wrapping paper, how do I go about doing this? What types of companies print gift wrap paper? Thanks!
Hey Jennifer, check out Spoonflower.com I use them for my fabric prints but they also print on wrapping paper.
Are they giclee quality?
@@ScottSerkland I will definitely look forward to that!
Quick question...will Cat Print let you know if the print will turn out grainy or bad because the size etc BEFORE they process your order?
This info is awesome. Will be checking them out.
Yeah, They're great! I love Catprint!
I've had canvas prints done there before and they look really good, I just don't know about 60" x60"
i ordered from them and my prints were super dark and blurry :(
Really. I would contact them back. I'm sure they will correct the issue. I've used them many times and many of my friends have used them and been completely satisfied. The only time I had an issue was once when they forgot to cut some prints down to a custom size, but they corrected the issue without a problem
What cardstock is that?
for my larger prints I don't go with card stock in case it needs to be rolled up, for that I use Heavy Letter Paper Matte. For 8.5 X 11 or smaller I use Heavy Cardstock Matte.
Hi! Just wanted to ask if Catprint ships worldwide, I live in Australia and I’m wondering if it’s possible to have prints shipped here.
Yes they do! International shipping is $55.00 with an estimated delivery time of 10-14 business days.
Thank you sooo much for your prompt response and amazing feedback 😁😊🤗
Anytime!
Thanks your video really helped me!!
Glad it helped!
Serkworks Art labs, I tried to have Shutterfly print my digital art but they rejected it because of low resolution. How can I increase the resolution?
Unfortunately, if you start at a low resolution there really isn't a way to increase it. ( you can lower your resolution but you can't do the opposite.) 300 DPI and up is required for most printing. So need to start at 300 dpi and at the size you want to print when you first set up your file. I sometimes go larger just in case I decide later on I want to print something larger.
The only exception to this rule is if you are doing vector art in a program like Adobe Illustrator, Vector art is all mathematical information and can be scaled up or down without any loss of quality.
Do you get your mini comics printed at other places or do you do it at home.
For the mini comics I print them all at home for my standard floppy comics I use Comix Wellspring.
Do you have a referral link for them?
Sure, you can find them at www.catprint.com/home
I mean I know artists in the past that get $10 off a future purchase with their referral link and the person being referred also gets a $10 discount on a future purchase.
Oh, sorry Maddy, I have a few other affiliate programs set up, but I haven’t looked into what programs Cat Print offers. Cat Print did reach out to me and offered me a very nice discount on my next order after they saw this video. I do appreciate you asking though. Thanks.
My dad iwns a print shop that actually has not changed print prices much since the '80s
Wow, really? That's pretty amazing, hopefully hes still able to earn a decent living charging 80's prices. I know a lot of illustrators who are still billing for what Illustrators made in the 80's.
I love your colorful background haha
Oh thank you!
Do you have to send in your actual artwork? or are you scanning your artwork and sending that way?
I'm not sure if they accept physical art. Most of my prints are digital or at least finished up digitally even if they start off hand drawn. If your work is traditional I would think you would have to scan it of photograph it first.
@@ScottSerkland thank you for the reply!..
Love your work!
Thanks Catherine!
Hi Scott! new sub here.
I wonder how the shimmer looks under glass... if it even reads?
Good question, I don't really know the answer. I haven't framed any of these print behind glass. I would imagine if you have two print framed one shimmer and one not side by side there would be a slight difference.
Awesome video, Mark Ruffalo!!
I get that Al the time.
You really know your stuff😊 thanks for the info👍
Your welcome! Thanks for watching.
Awesome dehydrated mail!
Thanks! I love blowing up that mini mail!
I love your energy
Thanks!
that was sooooo helpful! thank you
Always happy to help!
Are the prints archival?
Unfortunately no. For me it wasn't a big deal to switch from the archival photo prints I was getting at Costco to Cat Print. because I sell most of my work at comic conventions, where a lot of people are selling cheap colored copies. So the Cat Print prints were much higher quality and people were more concerned with the prints looking good and the paper stock than being archival. I don't think I've ever been asked about the archivability of a print at a con. However if you're are selling higher quality prints of fine art or something I can see where that would be important.
Call me naive but, I was given that all inks used in Jet Printers are pigment not dyes thus are 100 year or more archive-able.
new prints in the mail is like Artist's Christmas! Those came out really great! I had to laugh when you broke out the salt, great video!
Thanks Creed. I love getting prints in the mail. On a side note I should be airing the first of my Mad Genius Hall of Fame videos soon. At long last.
Awesome! Can't wait to see it!
This video is so dorky and I love it
Thanks. I take that as a complement!
great vid man! lots of good info. I just subbed
Thanks Caleb, welcome aboard!
Hi Scott.. Thanks Scott 👍⚡
You're welcome!
Whoa! How do you create something to be 3D?
I really need to do a video on it. the short answer is that you need to create a red and blue layer for every separate item you want to pop out or have depth. and you offset the red and blue layers at different intervals depending on how much you want the effect to stand out.
@@ScottSerkland a video would be awesome. All if your tutorials are great. I'm totally new to all of this and learning a lot from you!
I love this character and world you are acting as. Subscribing just for that! xoxox
Thanks! The hard part is to play a character and still be genuine and true to who I really am. I Hope I'm doing a good job of that. Thanks for subbing!
Thumbs up for eating the biodegradable peanuts lol Great info, thanks for the video! Just ordered a sample pack from Catprint!
I don’t know how much I can recommend the taste of the packing peanuts but I highly recommend Catprint for printing!
It’s funny I was dog-sitting for my girlfriend and she loved to eat those packing peanuts ( the dog not my girlfriend)
love your videos keep on uplouding
Thanks Maridalia, I intend to do just that!
i didnt think you were going to see my comment
Great vlog, Thanks 🙏🏼😊🙏🏼
Thanks for watching Henry.
Stickers?
Unfortunately I don’t believe Catprint prints stickers :(
Awesome Video!!!! :)
Thanks!
They may send that stuff out because I believe all of their in store printing is on standard photo paper.
hey there...thanks for your prompted reply. I wanted to know for both.
How much do you sell your prints for?
I sell 12 X 18 inch prints for $20
This video is great. :)
Thanks, happy to help
I'll send you one of my paintings in your message so you can get a better idea what I mean. Say I wanted my painting in a 22 x 32 can they do that...either of them.
Tim Robbins is your older brother, right? You sound and look like him (when he was a lot younger!). ;-)
I think thats the first time I've got tim Robbins, I get Mark Ruffalo and Jon Favreau all the time, but I like all three of those guys so I don't mind.
I think you should make another mini comic
I will, every time I wrap up an issue of my comic I make a special mini-comic version.
I don't know if you got the email but I sent you the link to the artist of the month featuring guess who .... you
Joshua Bredbenner I'm sorry. I've been super busy getting ready for comicon. I'm going to check it out now.
I understand I forgot all about the comicon coming up in your neck of the woods
That resizing so cheesy and so cool lol.
Thanks, I’m definitely going for a cheesy vibe and if it’s cool too that’s a plus.
Well, then you nailed it! Starting watching you channel about a month or two back and love the content keep up the good work.
Like 2000's Nickelodeon 🤣
He had me weak 😂😂😂
awwwwe!
Random....
I think you and Jim Carrey would make great friends.
Ha Ha, Yeah he's probably a good guy to hang out with, Not sure if you know this but he has been doing art lately and even has his own art studio.
Thanks! Btw, You look like Andy dufresne.
I’ve had people tell me I look like Jon Favreau or Mark Ruffalo, but Tim Robbins is a first. I’ve seen Shawshank about fifty times but never knew that’s how you spelled Dufresne, had to look it up just to be sure.
