- In the next part of this video I show how I plan and install the middle flight of the stair case, and unfortunately, uncover a silly mistake.
Dell ,is the steel that's holding up the joists level .....i'd be so pissed because of it being new work id be half thinking of getting the breaking hammer out to drop the steel in that corner behind .leave a prop under it and let the builder build it back in .W'ere all guilty of not checking at some point . Hi Adrian🖐I've looked at the further, and you've actually hit the nail on the head with your comment👊The new steel beam IS in out of level to match the existing house floor. The brickies leveled the blockwork on the née outer wall from the opposite end of the stair opening, and obviously, then ran their blockwork level all the way along. It was deemed that the new floor would not show being out of level at the stair end rather than the other end against a wall where a big, wall mounted TV is going. Basically, the floor HAD to be out somewhere to tie in with the existing😬 Perhaps, if I was more aware of this when putting in the joists, I could have fitted a few, diminishing firrings on the last few joists up to the stair opening🤔Great comment bud and well deducted about the steel beam😎Cheers Del

Already summed up in the other comments. Trusting the brickies levels. How many times I used to annoy them to change their so called level. Don't get that now because all timber frame here. If the level is out. My fault entirely. The brickies just skin what I build. But what defines a good tradesman is being able to overcome problems. In the end it will come out good. All through your jobs on this house you have found all sorts of funny levels and quirky bits. Now you have added your own for someone to find years down the line. We have all done it. Joys of renovations.

I made stairs for my own property many years back. I had the luxury of my own joinery workshop on site and we made many many flights for customers. The landing was about 20mm out, so I was able to accommodate this with the top riser (and housing). I was quite pleased with it! Not sure how you (technically) stand with Building Control but it was never mentioned.
All our stairs were dry fitted before they went out. Liked the 'hook' where the internal corner strings meet: never knew about that!!
You need an apprentice. To hold the camera!
Hi John🖐I think you had the ultimate set up bus, and I would have DEFINITELY made the top tread/riser/newel to accommodate an out of level floor in the same way you did👍Very cool idea, and it's usually only the centers 12 inches or so of the stair treads that people walk on anyway, so no problem with the top riser being taller one end👊Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del

10mm to a bricklayer is level and I was always told a cock up isn't a cock up if you can get over it which you did, good job mate

Hi Andy🖐Great comment and bizzarely, that would make the floor out of level across its length, because it was actually the steel beam that was 35mm high at the stairs end so it matched the existing floor😬(I got to the bottom of it after this part of the video👍) Cheers Del

Great video yet again! I work on new build and this is a common occurrence unfortunately. Plus the site managers order stairs off the drawing height instead of physicaly measuring each plot. Nightmare!

I watched this video hoping I would find a secret in how to fix those wall side internal half lap joints. Such a funny detail! I sometimes spring a wedge off the wall as well as the timber. I am surprised there is no pre milled pocket screw on the cad staircases. As you say it’s about getting it tight for the glue to go off!
Ah, sorry bud, no special method for fixing those corners😬Like you, I just 'pack' being the top part of the joint to keep it closed up tight👊I've worked closely with these stair manufacturers for many years, and they say that joint is like that due to the design/CNC software🤔Also like you, I think there could be a better way😉Cheers Del
I remember from an older video how efficient you are at doing these kits! You have obviously done a fair few in your time. Keep up the good work.💪🏻
You could screw up through the underside of the tread into the string rebates along both edges to get those corners tied in together

Hi Del I’ve got a question I forgot to post on my other comment. Is this staircase pretty much self supporting from the 1st floor where it’s hung? If you had suspended floors on ground floor under the newels, would you install it differently? I.e strengthen the floor underneath it ?
Great question🤔Yes, part of the stair is supported at the joist level, but its weight must be taken by the floor, and I would always try and fit/pack the newels down onto the substructual concrete💪Cheers Del
Was just thinking of a way to overcome the issue of the floor.
How about a recip saw through the glue and use a packer to tease up the edge and feather it out from there?

How come you used screws instead of dowels for the 2nd flight, can you use screws to pull the shoulder up tight if the dowels fail?
Hi there🖐There wasn't enough meat infront of the riser housing on the newel for dowels to work, that's why I had to screw it👍and yes, you can use screws in the same way if the dowels don't pull the joint tight👌Cheers Del

I'm amazed at 2 things, one, you trusted a brickie when he said it was level and two, you didn't realise as you were putting it in that it was the best part of 40mm out across the floor just by walking on it...
Hi Andy🖐This is the problem with only being called in to do bits and bobs on a job, and the joist at the other end of the floor WAS in level to the outer blockwork, however, the steel beam had been put in OUT of level to match the existing floor, (making it 35mm high at the stair end), and this showed on the joist that the stairs fitted to. Surely the bedroom floor and ceiling below must be a lot off level if the short 600mm level was showing 10mm?

if you have glued up the tall newel and wall strings you will struggle to slip the kite treads in after. It is usually better to fit them in
loose and then fix newel and strings.

I agree with this. I used to fit centre kite first and set back a bit then fit middle section and let it come together. Far easier but great vid. Enjoying watching this.

Don't want to be a killjoy mate but I think you might struggle with that first kite tread now that you have glued up that second string before fitting it! I made that mistake on the first set I done like this 20 years ago fresh out of my apprenticeship thinking I knew it all 🤣

I no you'd have been disappointed Del, but I often found floors out of level when fitting stairs. It can be a right pain deciding what will look least obvious to leave out of level or plumb, I think you're solution was the best in your case. Look forward to part 3.👍👍

In 6 months that will squeak like hell. Would have been better to go 2 straight lifts with small landing. These kits are usually crap.
Rise and going min calculations most probably wouldn't of worked for the head room on the half landing that's why they have a kite winder. A load of D4 will 100% stop the squeaking 😂
As Steve the Pug says, there is not enough room to get a half or two quarter lands in there🤔and they are guaranteed to stay squeak free😎Cheers Del
