    Dude, running U-joints at any angle, other than a straight line, gives an inherent vibration, that's why CV joints were invented, to get rid of that vibration. You're trying to piss against the wind 🤣

    A 205 transfer case will make some scary sounds when there is no load and it is free spinning, it will be fine when the power is put to it.

    If you continue having problems with bolts working themselves loose, try some nord lock washers on them. I put them on my exhaust headers to keep them from working out.

    • @docsridingadventures2880
      @docsridingadventures2880 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those nordlock washers are the best thing since sliced bread. I use started using them on just about everything on my old Harleys. It's really been a game changer no more bolts backing loose causing rattles.

    • @docsridingadventures2880
      @docsridingadventures2880 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Jonny- B yeah I love that the torque on the bolt has to increase to overcome the way the two washers interlock. Verses red locktite on something that I want to be able to remove easily but don't want to back off due to vibration

    • @clynesnowtail1257
      @clynesnowtail1257 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@docsridingadventures2880 red loctite also needs clean surfaces to work properly. If that bolt hole goes through into the case as they imply with oil leaking out, it won't work at all.

    good to see that the oil is climbing the gearset !!! still wouldn't hurt to put a cooling circuit on it, just a pump with a temp sensor and a external derale cooler. have it dump the oil right back into the top of the case, with a spray bar if your fancy, and the spray bar and be something simple, like a piece of 3/8 brake tube with a few 1/64 holes drilled into it with the end pinched off. As to how to block the transmission from shifting, take the governor out, and pin the weights down. mechanics wire works.

    I know it's a little late to ask. But how's the oil flow? I know it's a gear drive. But after a bit check the easy accessed bearings and check the oil for particulate matter. Since it's up on 1 end. And the front output will be for a air compression device. Keep an eye for a bit and set a oil level that works. Maybe a thermocouple to read out the tempeture.

    Not knocking in any the the way its all operating but if you factor in the money, time, effort spent on the running gear to date wouldnt it just have been easier to get hold of a proper marine transmission rated for the Cummins and at the ratio you need. Can be obtained from 1:1 up to 7:1 and higher. Wouldnt need to spring for a Twin-disc or ZF. Theres Nigata or Tonanco or any of the other "Asian"makers. They all build incredibly good and in the case of the "Asian"
    makers very cheap boxes. Most come with very efficient marine oil coolers. Would eliminate auto box trying to change gear on you (altho you can get 2 speed proper marine boxes too) and the transfer box with a now needed oil cooling system which could require an oil pump, raw -water pump (unless you plumb it into and existing system which will dump extra heat into it needing an extra cooler or bigger cooler being fitted. 👍👍 to what you have done/achieved so far tho.

  • @KnightsWithoutATable

    If the Lock-Tite doesn't hold, Nordlock washers are an option. Another option is to drill holes in the heads of the bolts and then run a pair of wires with one through the hole that you twist together very tight as it passes out of the hole, with it continuing on to the next bolt on the housing. This is house bolts are retained in airplane engines and can be used, when done right, to keep bolts from coming loose.
    As for making Best Speed, there are three reasons to still use it: a medical emergency onboard, the vessel is in danger where it is located (storm, mechanical failure, who knows), and the last and most likely to run across, a Mayday call from another vessel in the area. Getting there to render aid ASAP for a vessel in distress can be the difference between a really bad day for a crew and a group of grave markers on shore. All the things you learn when you sit next to a US Coast Guard Warrant Officer 3 while you are in a class for electronics and chat with them during class breaks. He had some crazy stories and some really sad ones. Several ghost ship ones too.

    Doug, the yokes on the shaft between the engine and the transfer case are out of phase by 90 degrees. The yokes on the shaft are supposed to be in line with each other. I couldn't get a good look to verify the other shafts. This is a huge source of vibration.

    very curious if your high frequency start tig machine burns out any electrical components on the boat. looks like that part was grounded on the vice you were welding on and i presume that's grounded to the boat as well. I've been afraid to strike a high freq start arc on any of my vehicle chassis just because grounds extend into all electronics to some extent. is this a concern of yours at all or have you considered it? I would love to rope it off as an old wives tale rather than always operating in fear but when you start thinking about what the ground plane might touch in a vehicle, boat, or anything else it's a bit scary. curious your thoughts.

      I think not, given the surface area of the blades, their speed, and the physical damage to the shroud.

      Maybe when this does not work, but so far it's looking great. I had that same question 1200 miles ago when I just had the Allison 545. Maybe it's time to start thinking that there are other ways that work besides Twin Disc. And Cheap Twin Disc? You must mean one that needs a complete rebuild, which voids the "Cheap"

    Also sorry the gods that be hate the word fuck so fucking much that you can't make money if you say it. Colorful language makes the world a better place.

    U-joints are cheap and easy to replace. CV joints ate smoother.
