I was wondering if you might have been able to save the solder that was trapped by lighting the torch next to him but suspect you're supposed to think that when you cant see the torch from the other side.

It might be possible to save him, but I'm not sure that it's possible to light the torch from the end of the tunnel, and as soon as you pick the torch up, you can't pull the sling out anymore.
