      plumberparts how can I soundproof the pump ? Our pump was installed in the adjacent bedroom (no room in bathroom) and is currently not boxed in so is very noisy. Is it safe just to build a frame around it ? Would I add sound proofing to the inside ? Is their a danger it could get too hot ? Thanks

      plumberparts sorry forgot to ask sometimes when I switch the shower on no water comes out until I turn a sink Tap on and then the shower kicks in and water comes out- what would likely be the cause of this ?

    As part of legionella control what we do at my firm (commercial mainly) is bring the expansion pipe up over the tank and then back down, into a visible tundish, then a fanny trap and tee into the waste or discharge out as you would a D2 on the unvented system. This is to prevent the warm water mixing with the cold bringing the temp of the cwst into the 20C or above which is a breeding ground for bscteria.
    Just a thought, may become mandatory at some point.
    Cheers for a great video bud. Atb

    A really handy video I stumbled across. Our builders when fitting a downstairs shower room took the hot and cold feed from under the sink. It runs under the kitchen and extension floor and then up to the shower mixer. It takes forever to get hot and often have to run cold for ages first then switch over to hot slowly. We have a pump for the upstairs shower but that doesn’t kick in with the downstairs. Can I put a pump between the downstairs shower and where they have taken the feed from under the sink?

    I would always fit an essex outlet on the tank to make sure no air feeds to the pump , and separate outlet to the handbasin etc .

    Hi, love the videos, just 1 question, is an essex/ surrey flange needed to stop the pump drawing air from vent pipe?

    Often when turning off the hot tap (it's a lever type tap) in the bathroom next to the shower our pump will turn on for a fraction of a second. What can be done to stop this?

      This is what we refer to as ‘nuisance switching’ and is caused by a pocket of air being trapped between the pump and the shower. The air acts as a spring and causes the water to move back and forth through the pump triggering the flow switches briefly. Clear the trapped air and the issue should go away.

    My insurance Policy states in the Water Leakage Section that the Policy is void if a leak comes from a flexible hose, that ST Pump has four so good luck making a claim buddy!😂

    • @Carl2k7
      @Carl2k7 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is that true even for equipment? Inside your boiler will have flexi’s, equipment like pumps can work harden the rigid pipes like copper and cause cracking at the copper, this is where flexi’s act like a bellow to absorb the vibration to prevent failures

    • @topfuelteddy

      Insurance doesn't seem worth the paper it's written on , Flexi hoses are used on most taps in most houses .

    Don't you have to use a different flange on the hot water to prevent air being sucked out?

    • @StuartTurnerLtdHenleyonThames
      @StuartTurnerLtdHenleyonThames 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Although best practice is to use either a top entry or side entry flange where possible, If the pump is to be located below the top of the hot water cylinder you can connect directly to the hot water supply. Just make sure you first angle the pipe upwards between 3 and 45 degrees and tee into the bottom cylinder. Refer to the installation guide for more advice. :)

    I have the exact setup you described. But loads of pressure on the cold feed to bath/shower mixer tap. It's just the hot feed that dribbles. I assume I need Stuart Turner Techflo TP Standard 2.0 Bar Single Impeller Shower Pump - 49086 for £85. And that I cut into the hot water feed. Can I do it with a plastic pipe? I am in a rental property and on leaving I have to put it back to as found. So my thought is to cut into their 22mm copper pipe to interrupt the flow. Install the pump. Then when I finally leave take out the pump and patch the copper pipe.

    Great video. I've got a question mate. We have a shower pump to our main bathroom fed by gravity water tank and vented cylinder storage. Problem is when the shower is on it works fine, but once you turn off the shower tap the water pump engine is still working and it won't switch off! I have to go up to the loft to turn the fuse switch off to stop it and over heating. Why doesn't it isolate the water pump off? It used to work a fine before... Many thanks!

      If the shower valve is passing water 💧 in the off position, You don’t give the location of the shower pump. If the location of the pump is in the loft, It should be a negative head pump , If not check the pressure switch. Don’t understand why 13 Amp spur switch is in the loft. Unless pump is located in the bathroom 🚽

    I have this exact pump Stuart turner ecomate 2 bar. It's being used for approximately only 2 hours in total. It feeds two showers. Only one shower is ever used at any one time. Today it stopped working again. When I turn on the showers there is only a dribble of water and the shower just makes a humming sound. I turned off the pump and ran the showers in all positions as you did in the video to purge the pump but it made no difference. Any ideas what could be the problem. Thanks for your help.

      After posting this I disconnected the pump from the power and water connections to take a closer look at it. When I looked at the bottom of the pump I could see where crystals had formed on the outside of the motor where there is obviously a small leak. I then removed the covers on each end of the pump to have a closer look. Here you should be able to turn the motor shaft freely but it wouldn't turn. It was completely seized. I proceeded and removed the plastic wheels off either end of the shaft that are used to propel the water through the pump. I then clamped a vice grip on one end of the motor shaft and gave it a good hard twist to get the motor moving again it worked. I reassembled and connected the pump back up to the water and power supply. Before turning on the power I purged the pump. I then turned on the power and tried the shower again. It now works again but a small leak remains at one end of the motor. As far as I know you cannot get spare parts for motor for this particular pump. The motor is in one sealed unaccessible unit. So I was told by a Stuart turner agent in Ireland. I was left with no option but to order a new one or else a different model. I can assure you the leak was not caused by the water being too hot (65 degrees Celsius as mentioned in there manual) entering the pump. Tank emersion turns off at 50 degrees Celsius. Also the leak happened on the side where the cold water was connected not the hot. I reckon it's just a cheap crappy pump. I would not recommend it to anyone. Hope this helps someone out.

    How do you pipe up the pump differently if you want the pump to run a shower only vs kicking in for all hot taps in the house as well? I've seen it that some people want the pump to run just a shower and have the hot taps gravity only bypassing the pump and also seen it where people want the pump to kick in for the whole house. Please explain how you'd pipe both ways. Thanks.

    Please help. I have recently had this same shower pump installed in the airing cupboard next to the cylinder. The gravity flow is more than 1 litre per minute. When the shower lever is in the middle 50:50 mix of hot and cold the pump pulses. Ok when the lever is moved to more hot or cold mix. The system has been bleed of air. No issue with the shower head or shower lever as these have been checked and are free of debris. Any help greatly appreciated.

    very helpful informative video, thank you. i had been struggling to work out why the showers in the old house i have just moved into had such rubbish pressure, i thought the problem was the undersized service pipe into the house but now i realise it is a gravity fed open vented system exactly like the one you demonstrate, i realise this is the main issue. my question is this; do i need one of these pumps for each of the 3 showers in the house or can i plumb the pump next to the tank to power all of the showers if they are not all being used at the same time? two up stairs, one downstairs and the hot water cylinder and boiler are upstairs in the main bathroom next to the main shower?

    Hello Mate
    You videos are really great. My plumber has installed a salamander pump for my new bathroom. But the pressure is not very great. I can see that from my tanks(hot on floor level and cold in loft) the pipes coming out are 22mm which coming upto my bathroom. But in old bathroom out of those main 22mm supply , sink and shower used to have a 15 mm pipes.
    But the guys who did the rework on bathroom has taken the input for shower pump from 15mm old pipes and i think same he has put to shower and other areas of bathroom. Can you suggest if this could be problem for the low pressure. Also like to ask if input pipe to pump can be 22m while outgoing can be 15 mm?

    • @craigwatson7692
      @craigwatson7692 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That really depends on what you want to achieve with your system. Do you want a pump to just feed your shower or do you want the pump to feed the whole house. Either way could be costly. It wasnt really touched on in this video but the size of the header tank James fitted is important. for any booster pump you need a minimum of 40gals of stored water, and that's for a single shower/outlet. If your feeding multiple showers/outlets then you need a greater amount of stored water. The last basic shower pump install I priced came in at £600 and that's because the stored water was too little and due to the loft hatch size I had to buy 2 smaller tanks and link them together to achieve the 40 gals needed to meet manufacturers requirements. If your going to be feeding multiple outlets you could potentially add a further £200 - £400 to that bill depending on what pump size and type is required.
      You could get a combi as you mentioned but again we dont know your hot water requirements or what your supply pressures are so we cant accurately answer that. Theres always an option but we need all the info first to answer you correctly.

    A couple of things for Wednesday:
    Should the hot supply pipe from the CW tank be slightly higher than the cold. So if the tank should run low the hot would stop running and prevent scalding. Perhaps it doesn't matter with a thermostatic valve?
    Would you advise the use of a flange to prevent air from the hot finding its way into the pump?
    Why use strainer valves when there are filters in the pump and at the shower valve?

    • @StuartTurnerLtdHenleyonThames

    I've been advised by multiple plumbers that if I want to live in my house for more than a couple of years, then don't buy the showermate, get the monsoon instead. The warranty for the showermate is 5 times shorter for a reason (apparently).

    love this video,thank you, can you use any pump for hot water tap in the bath? the cold water is working fine good pressure but the hot is very bad and slow due to the same problem you just showed us,thank you

      If pumping hot only to a mixer tap make sure you use a Universal pump to ensure it starts every time. The higher pressure on the cold side of the mixer can prevent the flow switch on a positive head pump from working correctly.

    WHAT IS THE FLOW FROM ANY INSTALLED SHOWER OR OTHER OUTLET WITHOUT A PUMP FITTED? - We have a gravity fed system in our home and in our bathroom upstairs on our bath tub we mixer taps installed with a middle plunger that we pull up for the shower hose head. Would this test filling up a 1 liter jug be from ONLY the hot water tap on full or with both hot and cold taps both on full through the shower hose head when doing the test to see how much water has filled up in the bucket/jug over 60 seconds? Thanks

    Lots of information and an amusing delivery. Having watched your video I went ahead and had a new Stuart Turner pump fitted at the base of the cylinder,. This was replacing an old noisy one that has lived under the bath for over ten years. The plumber fitted the new pump almost exactly the way you have, lovely installation. Regrettably the pump started to weep on the cold side after just over a month of being installed. I contacted Stuart Turner and they wanted pictures of the installation.
    They have refused warranty stating that the angle, on the pipe at the top of the tank for the hot water supply is insufficient. So even though it is the COLD water side that is weeping, warranty is refused because they say the HOT side is not fitted correctly.
    I urge anyone fitting a pump to follow the fitting instructions explicitly, no matter how expensive that may be, as any failure will have your warranty claim rejected.

      A bit late to reply now, but sometimes you can get some debris left over from manufacturing the pump, as well as bits of limescale or dust or whatever from the tank. You don't want this getting into your shower valve.

    I have a question, someone help me? My apartment plastic water tank is stacked on a hot water tank. The plastic tank Is 1 meter from the floor and pipes run down and under the bath to reach the basin taps. I'm getting 38 secs = 1 litre on my basin taps. Could I use a positive water pump? I was planning to put one on the floor below the water tank.

  • @JustLikeBuildingThings
    @JustLikeBuildingThings 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Easier solution... Don't bother with a pump and switch to unvented!
    After all of the pipe running needed to put a pump in our place it was cheaper to do an unvented, win win less to go wrong.

    • @wiggumo
      @wiggumo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Costly no?

    • @craigwatson7692
      @craigwatson7692 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wiggumo depends what you class as costly. An unvented 180 litre cylinder supplied and fitted will cost around £800 to £1000, for that you'll get a 25 year guarantee on the cylinder, better hot flow rate and quicker heat recovery. But you have to consider yearly service cost and you will at some point be replacing the expansion vessel, inlet valves and pressure relive valve. Also not all systems are suited to an unvented cylinder.
      But compared to potential costs of a pump install which can also be in excess of £1000, also the pump lifespan is not 25 years, I've taken pumps out that are only 5 years old. Either option isnt cheap but long term the unvented cylinder is likely going to cost less.

    James, I’ve got 3 bar on my mains cold feed but 0.5 bar on the gravity fed hot. Can you do a vid we’re only the hot is pump pressurised and a equalising valve is used to balance the two?

  • @SimonLancaster
    @SimonLancaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve watched your vid twice now. Love your style and straightforward approach. As an amateur DIYer, gonna take the plunge and give this a go. Two Qs: 1) can’t find those inline strainers anywhere. Can you share a link. 2) Going to site my pump next to he tank in airing cupboard however my CW / HW feed needs to go back into the loft to rejoin existing 22mm pipe work back and down to the shower. Is this a problem going back up to loft using 22mm > 15mm > 22mm ?

    i have searched endlessly but cant see any guides for installing showers in flats ( guess loft applies double for flats). boiler is communial. CWT is in airing cupboard above the hot water cylinder, thats vented to top of the CWT. gravity fed right?
    i bought a mixer bar low pressure shower (triton tees) i get approx 9 litre pm from bathroom sink taps. manual says min 8lp min for best results. so im borderline., was going to install until i saw this video!
    ok so i must need a pump, universal, centrifuge, twin but how many bars?. normally 1.5 for flat? but i read it says 3 bar if large shower head. the one i have is 200x200
    what do u reckon , 2 bar plenty? thank you
    oh yea im a painter need any help il film myself toshing a flat out

    Hi mate. Amazing video. Thank you so much. I've just fitted the exact same pump and exact same set-up. My pressure is now great. My only issue now is that my brand new thermostatic bar mixer shower is not getting really hot. It does get really hot however if I isolate the cold feed. I'm thinking it's the thermostatic cartridge but it's brand new. Any ideas?

    Some neat copper pipework bending between the cold and hot supplies from the mixer dropping down to the shower pump. Some guidance on this pipe bending wizardry to avoid clashes (crossover's) and then back to the wall for pipe support would be much appreciated - both 15 and 22?. Great video and presentation as always James...

    so I'm replacing an old ST showermate that broke with a new ST monsoon universal (negative head didn't always want to start on new upstairs shower). All my pipework is 15mm and the ST universal has 22mm connections. I know the manual says to use 22mm throughout, is this just for maximum flow or will it damage the pump running on 15mm? Should I get a different pump?
