Thanks for posting this awesome live recording. I can only envy those who got to see Old And In The Way live in concert back in 1973. What a lineup: Jerry Garcia (banjo/vocals/back vocals), Peter Rowan (acoustic guitar/vocals/back vocals), David Grisman (mandolin/vocals/back vocals), Vassar Clements (fiddle), and John Kahn (string bass). And to have Ramblin’ Jack Elliott join them on a couple of songs! And there was Vassar Clements setting fire to the strings on his fiddle. Jerry Garcia, Peter Rowan, and David Grisman finding that high, lonesome sound. And John Kahn’s thundering doghouse bass. The audience was in musical heaven that day of the recording. Bluegrass at its finest!

Saw this tour in 73. Waterbury CT. Small theater. Doug sahm opened.
I saw old and in the way before i saw my 1st dead show(watkins Glen ) i also was seeing NRPS before i saw the dead, with Buddy cage on pedal steel. Original lineup.
To my ears this was the best era of that whole scene. I was 17 and really opening up to all this great music and collaborations.

@@siskiyoucrest it was a great show. I was lucky. 73 sound check fri night at watkins glenn was another bucket list show. We were camped 50 yds from stage. Surprise2 set 3 hr gift from the dead for those who were there early. Just missed pig pen as he passed away that early spring. One drummer. Billy. Keith and donna. Jerry stage right in those days. Wall of sound just getting going.

@@johnhornberger2016 Thank you for sharing that story John, so awesome. I'm only 45 so I was a little late to the game but my first show was '89 so I got what I could get:) Its trusting Mom that will drop off their 14 year old at a Dead show alone, and ask what time would be a good time to get picked up:)

when I was young we would spend Easter with my great gran father who lived in the mountains of VA was near a hour to a paved road no tv not much radio but a cluster oh about 10 homes and Hoppy's store with its great brass coffee grinder and no lie a cracker barrel with a checker board painted on the head.On Friday nights everyone would gather on my grans porch my gran played mandolin and others fiddle guitar dulcimer ect . They would discreetly pass a jug of local made corn whisky not a one of them younger than 70. They were old and in the way we made some reel to reel tapes of some of those nights but 50+ years of improper storage has left them near worthless .I am glad Jerry left me the next best thing.

Utterly wonderful stuff. Started listening to serious Bluegrass about 10 years ago. I completely dig where Jerry/David were coming from back in the day when they cut their teeth on this stuff as they were learning. What can you say about Peter? What a a giant of an artist. It would sure have been interesting to have heard/seen this group LIVE, with a good sound system back in '73. My love of bluegrass would/could have started so much earlier. The String Dusters, Steep Canyon Rangers, the Boxcars, Uncle Earl, Tony Rice, Longview, Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, JD Crowe, Sam Bush, Tim O'Brien, Sam Hill, Jackstraw, Guy Clark, Larry Sparks, Del McCoury and family, Seldom Scene, Rhonda Vincent, Laurie Lewis. Also the Time Jumpers and the Flatlanders, and Emmylou and Dale Watson and Dave Alvin and Gillian Welch and Chris Smithers, and Pentangle and Mary McCaslin, and John Stewart. :)

This is the greatest bluegrass album of all time. No one could ever beat it. Think about the irony that disco and fake music of the day represented compared with this. Disco still sucks but this lives on.

    • @wyattmims3604

yep..far as i know..those shows were taken from the Boarding House in San Francisco which has all been released as a complete set..This show is from the Sonoma State University Gym(according to the info above) and boy does it sound fantastic( even better than the copy I had on a bootleg disc years ago.. I once had a cool unofficial boxset of various Jerry stuff and this show and one other were included...I believe the other show had Richard Greene on fiddle and was epic( might of had one other guest...I've been hunting for that one.I would imagine that Bear recorded most if not all of the Old and In The Way stuff because he seemed to be deep into this group..I wouldn't be surprised if more music from this legendary group started to surface. Even though the output was limited to Garcia's downtime from Dead tours this stuff smokes big time and is truly timeless..It would be great to see more of Jerry's jams and sidetrips released.

I lived there for a spell, late '74. If it has become a "hippie heaven", I'm willing to wager that it's about the funkiest h.h. that ever was.
