I've been doing RE Photography for 10 years now and have used this method a lot in the past. It's a great video and clearly explained. Now the hard bit is finding a client who is paying enough money for a shoot to make this amount of detailing worth your while. But the off camera flash is definitely the way to go.

@@TaylorBrownPhotoVideo I stumbled upon the technique by accident early in my photography career. During a power outage while shooting indoors, it was getting dark, and I didn't have a flash, only a powerful torch. Remembering my early mistakes with slow shutter speeds that created light streaks, I decided to try something unconventional. I set the camera to a slow shutter speed and moved the torch in a figure-eight pattern around the camera, just enough to fill the room with light and complement the remaining ambient light. It was a makeshift solution that turned out to be a valuable lesson.
Recently, I landed a full-time job with an independent company, but before that, I was self-employed for years, working closely with a well-established estate agent. My strategy was simple: I set aside 25% of my earnings in a separate account to cover taxes and invested heavily in equipment to reduce my tax burden. I was earning well until COVID hit, which marked the end of my main clients and led to a challenging period. As agencies began to dominate the market, I tried freelancing through one but quickly realized they paid less than half of what I used to earn and had poor job scheduling. After a particularly frustrating experience, I cut ties with them.
Today, I'm less concerned with strategies, except for my side jobs, but I'm troubled by how the creative industries are increasingly controlled by middle-man agencies. I used to enjoy the independence of self-employment, but the rise of agency-commissioned zero-hour contracts is stifling for freelancers. I once wrote an open letter criticizing how some agencies devalue creative professionals, reducing them to low-wage workers despite demanding high-end equipment and long hours.
I can't offer a clear strategy for these times. With AI already handling editing, the future of property photography could see homeowners doing the work themselves with just a smartphone and tripod, aided by LIDAR technology. This shift could happen within the next 2-5 years.

@@djowelv Trial and Error! After you do a lot of these, you'll get a feel for what flash strength works for different size rooms with your flash. For the alternate shots, I just kept it at the same strength since you're going for a similar amount of light. Have you tried it?

@@djowelv Congrats! You'll be fine. Just watch your verticals + horizontals to make sure your photos dont look distorted for wide angles (Check out this video to see tips on compositions + tripod heights that work well bit.ly/3lip8Rb) + also for backup you can shoot HDR for each shot real quick if you're worried about flashes not turning out right. Usually on Kitchens, I will do a straight on shot of the whole thing zoomed in a little bit for some compression (like 20-24mm), Corner shots looking in also showing the whole space (18-20mm if possible) and some straight on shots looking down the interior of it to show the counter tops and cooking areas, and a corner shot showing the view as if you're in it cooking while looking out into the rest of the house. Also 50mm (f2+) details for the ovens, sink, burners/stove, countertop, cabinets if thats a selling point if it's for a client that needs details - they'll definitely appreciate it. You got this!

"you can use any flash for this as long as its powerful enough" For condos and smaller rooms a speedlight is usually enough yes, but there are situations where you'll need a more powerful light, such as an 200w/s or even a 600w/s monolight. Longer or larger rooms will require at least two lights, one behind the camera and another popped on opposite side of the room and blended later. Also, you really should never need 13 exposures for a room such as this, with the right flash power and placement 4 exposures maximum...I'd probably do it with three. Ambient, flash, and window pull. Two if no window pull is needed if the view outsides isn't of interest.

Man you really broke it down. This was great. When I take multiple frames, it seems no matter how still I keep it-even with auto align, I still run into issues where I mask in something out of place. Does this happen with you?
If you’re going from LR to PS Make sure to uncheck the crop to frame button on Lightroom and apply the profile correction to all of the layers first. Sometimes it gets a little weird otherwise ! Let me know if that helps :)
@@TaylorBrownPhotoVideo I already do this, but on this last job, I hung my bag on the tripod and it seemed to help with alignment. But I did change the way I brush in my ambient based off of this video, and it really helped. Sadly, I never actually edited with the direction of light in mind.

I feel like if you recommend a $40 godox gn33 as "all you need" then you really should use it for your example, instead of the $250 godox v1. Gave a thumbs down, since your showing flash compositing using eraser and cutouts tools...not sure how you've been able to edit consistently like that. There are major benefits working non-destructively using layer masks in photoshop and I think it would help any beginner way more to be shown that way. Thanks anyway.
Thanks for the feedback & watching!! Totally understand + agree it would have been better that way. I was mostly wanting to keep it pretty simple to show the main point (You can build the photo in a different way than how most people might realize) with what I had with me on the trip. The results would have been the same with almost any flash. I do masking sometimes, but for a lot of these types of images it is easier for me to work this way even if it’s a little weird :)
Wouldn't it be better to use layer masks? That way if you make a mistake or need to tweak anything you can change the mask and not the image. Just sayin'

I'm just getting into real estate photography and videography with entry level gear. With a Go Pro 9, as you know these aren't the best in low light situations. Do you recommend this or maybe something else for this camera?
Honestly I’m not sure. Can you do HDR photos on GoPro? Might be your best bet for quality photos but you’ll probably want something else as soon as you can afford it to make more money / get better clients. Not much you can do for video except shoot at the brightest time of day to get the best results on GoPros! Hope this helps :)

I can't help thinking the final image is too dark. I would drag the exposure more to the right. 😊 and im trying to learn flash and to have to do all that work on sight+ editing seems really time consuming...plus my computer does not have enough ram to do such a composite. :( i think flash is hard :(
Usually you can pull off most photos with 1 or 2 layers 👌👌👌 This example was kinda Ridiculous lol

Yeah this videos a little extreme lol. Check out some of my other BTS videos ! Usually I use it at 1/4-1/2 power with the 2 or 10 second self timer on the camera for shoots like this.

what power are you using on the flash? I've been conflicted on whether I'm blasting too much or too little. I know that's probably an intuition thing. I like how you held it close to the ceiling as I've tried from the floor and just blasted an overexposed white half a room and nothing elsewhere!

Do you recommend this over a white umbrella?
White umbrella will be better and consistent no matter what the walls colors are. But if they’re neutral colors the wall/corner is a bit faster !

Hey!! Thanks for the feedback. Sorry if it was confusing :) Yes 100% if you make a ton of layers it takes forever to edit. Typically I'm able to do these photos for listings with just 1 shot (white balance, exposure, etc need very little editing when shot this way, so that's what I meant by in-camera, basically ready to go.) I might have gone a little overboard by showing all the extra layers in this video to show the possibilities - definitely threw some people off with this vid lol. I have a new one that's about to go up later today on starting out using just one flash. Hopefully that will be more helpful /// Thanks for the support !!

In your latest video did he "paint in" the flash fill onto an HDR photo or was it literally just one flash shot? So many questions I have.
I know there are different techniques and such and the more layers the more control but I just want to know how to start out small and if I don't have to shoot 3 bracketed shots for HDR and get better results with a 1 shot OCF then I will start doing that.
@@PleasantsProductions Nope just 1 image with 1 flash on the other video (covers most small-medium areas) - Ambient is just for backup if you are trying it out for the first time so you can see how things work in editing, and have that layer if you want to use any of it for any reason. Worth trying out and seeing what works for you especially if you like how the photos look :)
I’ve got a 600w strobe and shooting a dark ish room / apartment what would be your tips ? Do i need to stack images without showing the flash in the photo ?
Yes! I would recommend shooting with the lights off if you can so you have the most control of light colors. Then get the ambient exposure as bright as you can without blowing out the window too much and fill with the flash. Then do another layer with the windows exposed better if the view is important to combine in post. Could also do another layer with lights on and use fill flash again to add those in the edit without causing all the color cast that they produce in real life. Another option would also be to use a gel on your flash to make it more orange to match whatever the lighting looks like and simplify the whole process. Hope that helps!

True! Sometimes it’s nice to have a little more power for really big rooms. I have a two flash setup with the ad200 and v1 and haven’t needed any more power than that for Real Estate!
I just had a really bad real estate photo session I am no photographer...do we need flash for this type of photography? cuz I dont even know how to use a flash...maybe thats why they sucked lol
A lot of people do HDR with great results ! I think it’s more about knowing composition and how to work with spaces/ lighting which takes time. BUT I really like flash for interiors and it helps me with consistency and dealing with basically any type of lighting situations with repeatable results. I’ve had plenty of bad shoots too! Always a good time to problem solve to plan for next time :)

Hi Taylor! How do you flashing remotely? I mean is there any button on the flash to act camera shutter?
Hey! It's the opposite. I use the camera with the self timer (2 or 10 seconds) and it triggers the flash when the shutter goes off. There's a trigger that goes on top of the camera that does it remotely. You can also get a remote trigger to use that would make it a bit easier though!
Oh timer okay, i thought you are using some remote controller like yongnuo 603. Im using 603 with wire from 603 to camera and can shoot remotely but with older flash version@@TaylorBrownPhotoVideo

Thanks!! Somehow I’m never saw your comment, Jess. Also masking works great if you want more flexibility on recovering what you delete. I’ve done some more videos on that since this one that are a lot simpler too :)
Once you have experience with the edit, how long does it take to edit each photo (for an average shot)?
For typical Real Estate shoots I just use 1-3 photos per composition, so it really just takes a few minutes to edit (1-2 hours max per home for normal edits). Went into a little bit of an overkill example on here to show what's possible if you want to get creative with it.

I would put this plastic,omnidirectional diffuser off. You don't really need it. Just bounce your flash off the ceiling and you'll get nice,even spread of light

Yeah! Check out some of my other editing videos though, lots more shortcuts/ tips! (Off camera flash ones, and the latest one has similar techniques, same concept as this video basically)
Why not take a bracketed photo and then dodge and burn?
Biggest benefit is that flash helps with more accurate colors in mixed lighting situations and gives control over softness of lighting. But both work! This example is overdone and usually it only takes 1-2 photo layers and a little bit of editing to get consistent results.

Yeah, super fast + easy to set up your shots. I use a manfrotto one (check my other videos) not the one in this video, I just had this random tripod from a friend on this trip.

I like OCF most for interiors :) But more simple than the second example (usually just editing 1 or two layers that are mostly ready to go Straight out of camera) - was just trying to show the possibilities if you want to get super into it. HDR is great too & Definitely better for some people 😁

How do you compare between the different models of off-camera flashes?
I'm Considering buying the 2-nd hand canon 430ex ii (as its cheaper and I can't afford the more expensive ones)
I'm not sure if its enough for smaller spaces, or is it just a waste of money, WDYT?
Hey!! Check out my video on OCF setup. The ones I use are cheaper than canon, and simpler to use especially for using them wireless. Canon ones are great too, though! Just more money to get going.
what are you using to trip the camera and strobe?
2 or 10 second timer and trigger on camera to make the flash go off. You can also use a remote trigger button or app for more control
Do you adjust Zoom range in flash ?
Sometimes but usually it’s on the widest setting (lowest #) so it’s softest. For large rooms it can help to zoom tighter to bounce off a ceiling though.

How do you get rid of window reflections while shooting flash? I can see all what's inside the room as window reflections 😐
Hey! I’m not totally sure what you mean. But.. if you have a flash reflection, try shooting another image with no flash or the flash in another spot so you can have a clean shot to pull from as another layer in Photoshop. Or if your having a harsh glare you might need to try using a Circular Polarizing filter. With those, you can twist it until it takes the glare out giving more visibility. It’s magic! Basically changes the angle the light gets to the camera slightly so the visibility is more clear. Let me know if that is what you meant ! :)

Thanks! The view wasn't great so it wouldn't have added anything to the image. Definitely would if it was for an interior where the view was a selling point! To get more of the window view, you can just set your ambient exposure darker and use more flash power to compensate :)

The window view was powerlines and nothing interesting lol
that's a ton of work for ONE photo. When delivering up to 40 photos per shoot that looks like hours of work.
Yeahh you’re right it wasn’t the best example lol. Mostly just need 1-2 layers max for RE photos.

Also, having done some research based on your vids/suggestions I’ve landed on this lens kit. Fits in my current budget. Wanted something that could be used on cam and for OCF real estate interiors shots. Not an HDR fan so really want to get a hang of this workflow. I like (assume I’m correct) that these will function together both in manual and automatic TTL mode communicating with my old Rebel T3. Can you confirm for me?! Looking like I’ll be good to go with this setup but juuuust want to confirm! Thanks again!

@@kmdecocreative9838 Should be good! I used to have that flash, and it was great! Unless you need to top-mount your flash on-camera you might like their other trigger better amzn.to/37VNMlQ - Its the same functionally, but the screen is huge , and it's easy to see your settings from above, and its a bit more intuitive to use! The other one is great, but you will always be crouching down to look at the screen when your camera is on a tripod lol.
@@TaylorBrownPhotoVideo I kept going back and forth on that one as well. I was being lazy with the other setup so I could just leave the transmitter on cam and remove the flash unit whenever I needed. ... suppose it’s just as easy to remove transmitter and throw the flash unit on directly when needed. Lol.
More “intuitive” seems the way to go since I’ll def be a newb heading into either setup usage. Another quick Q’s/confirmation based on your workflow. Obv the circumstances/settings will change due to room size. I should have the cameras settings always the same to match the “base exposure first establishing shot” when grabbing the OCF shots right? ... what about the flash/transmitting settings, that’s got me a little confused, is there a universal “rule or equation to your workflow” ... IE if the cameras settings are “A” for the perfect exposed base shot than the flash should be set at “B”. Hope that makes sense.
@@kmdecocreative9838 It will vary from room to room depending on how much natural light there is. With my camera, I start out at ISO 400, F6.3, WB 4800 and adjust shutter speed based to the right ambient amount per room. Usually TTL works pretty consistently at +.3 setting with my flashes, but sometimes its inconsistent depending on where you're bouncing the flash or if you're in the shot. So its easier to start out with manual settings till you get the hang of it! Usually bigger rooms are between 1/4 power and full power, and small bathrooms are around 1/16 power. Hope that helps! Also, once you get the hang of it, I doubt you will want to shoot with the flash ON-CAMERA :)

Hey! Almost always f6.3, iso 400, wB 4800K for interiors ! Shutter speed to set ambient exposure and flash varies from shot to shot.
What does flattening the image do?
It just turns it into one layer so when you save it, it all bounces back to Lightroom as one image. If you want to save your Layers, you can just save as a PSD though!

Hey!! I always shoot in RAW to get the most range. Compressed RAW can also be a great option to reduce file size a bit if your camera has it.

For sure! Me too. I did a lot of layers of flash for this example just to show the possibilities if you want to get more creative with lighting, but on a normal shoot its usually just going to take 1-2 photos max for consistent results :) Try it out and see what ya think!

@@IhateCCPCorrect! If you have a Canon Camera they ones linked will work. They have other options for other brands too if that's what you have. Here's the one I have for Canon. Flash - @t Trigger - @t If you plan on getting modifiers for soft boxes at any point (for portraits or anything really) I would go with this flash instead -amzn.to/3k6YZX6 - It's normal speedlight shape fits into modifiers better than my flash thats rounded. If you want to see an example where I compared a super cheap flash ($45) to my main one - you might like this video: th-cam.com/video/Uf3kJSuhswk/w-d-xo.html - If its still available the starter flash came as a $45 kit and was pretty good for learning on amzn.to/3kJLoCY.
