After 25 years in the military, enlisted and officer, I’m retiring and pursuing CDL to own a dump truck company. I really appreciate you for sharing. God bless
I just got my CDL permit and starting school in January. Definitely not going OTR and I am considering dump truck or cement truck. Hope I can find something without experience. Great video!
I've always done vocational driving jobs. Mostly towing but I hauled fuel for a bit. I don't recommend towing as it interferes with your life a lot, but I don't think I'd want to do long haul either. I'm getting fat enough with the physical activity I already do. If I did long haul they'd probably need a second airbag in the seat after One year 😂
God bless you my brother, i am 29 right now i drove a mixer for 3 years a dump truck for 4 months im planning on going all in on a dump this year ive never done asphalt im planning on learning as i go i just did material deliveries when i was driving. Love the content keep it up
Sincerely appreciate it. You’re way ahead of the game. As long as you know how to maneuver the truck, you’ll pick up running asphalt and milling easily. My trainers were the spotters. Do nothing without them. If you can’t see them, DO NOT MOVE!!!! You’re tracking. Wish you all the best!!!!!! Glad you checked out my channel. The kind words are appreciated as well.
I been 40 years in the dump trucking industry 8 axle truck and pup heavy haul in construction. I paved for 18 years. Kinda miss it but don’t miss the smell. 😂😂. Glad your enjoying the ride so far and helping others to understand and break into the industry. It’s a fresh perspective vs watching someone broadcast their egos on video yet offer no real insight on the job and how things work. 😊😊. Welcome
The smell is definitely something to appreciate lol. I’m sincerely grateful for the compliment. I have no ego. Just like helping others and sharing. Thanks for passing through and liking the content. All the best….
To be honest, the extra money you make doing OTR or regional isnt worth being away from your family. You can make just as much local or dedicated. Even class b jobs pay more than a lot of class a.
@@khariharris5428 its all depends. Obviously you're going to have drastically different salaries on both sides depending on the niche of the job. Some class A jobs pay as low as 55-60k a year. Some class B jobs as low as 40K. I've also seen class B jobs that paid 2k a week.
It’s pretty good. You can earn between .45 - .55 cents per mile as a rookie driver…plus incentives and signing bonuses. I averages 2500 miles per week.
Did you get your CDL for automatic or manual? I just graduated and got my cdl-A with automatics. Just missed a good opportunity yesterday because they use all manuals.
Yes…however, I’ve removed that restriction by taking a manual Class B Dump Truck to DMV and retested (pre-trip and maneuvers). In my state, you’re allowed to do that. Thanks for watching.
I can't imagine being limited to automatics. The company I work for just sold their last 18spd eaton manual truck, now everything is auto. I'm mostly in a five ton so it is at least an Allison, but sometimes I'm in a Pete daycab with an Eaton 18 speed autoshift pulling a landoll, and I absolutely despise that transmission. When I press the throttle pedal I want to go now, not several seconds later. When you shift from drive to reverse to back in somewhere it just goes "ding ding" and sits there in the middle of the road because I didn't wait long enough for the planet's to align and it go into reverse. Pulling out across traffic is painful because of the delay between gears. First snow of the year it left me hanging half way up a hill. It spun the tires a little and decided it needed to upshift. So right when i needed throttle to get up the hill it cut out to shift. Then i put it in reverse to back down the hill and not touch the brakes, but it didnt go into reverse and i ended up going backwards in neutral. Had to hit the brakes and ended up with the back axle of the trailer off the road and stuck half way up the hill till someone brought a loader with some sand. I hate it so much and want a truck with a shifter again.
Good morning. A Class B license At DMV, you’ll take a General Knowledge and Air Brakes exam…which you can study for on TH-cam. Thanks for watching. All the best…
It’s a great option. You control your destiny once you get a lil experience. After getting your license, it’ll be 1-2 years (realistically) before doors start opening up. Look into the Workforce Development Grant. It pays for your CDL. If you were prior military, I was advised they will cover it too. Go for it. I have a BS Degree and it has changed my life. All the best to you. Thanks for watching.
@@otrshark independent school , i’m really just trying which is the best route to go and if i get my class A would i still be able to do dump trucking ??
That’s a good move. Mega carriers lock you in to a commitment if they pay for your CDL. All you need is a class B to drive a dump truck. So, the A will cover you. You looked up the Workforce Development Grant? If not, ask the school about it. It pays for your education. I made a video on how to get your CDL for free. Check it out. That’s how I got mine.
Try finding a cement mixing company or a material yard in your area. Most of those companies hire new drivers. Indeed.com is also an option. Good luck to you. You’ll find something. The industry always needs drivers.

How do you get into a company without experience ( fresh out of school ) ?
Someone has to give you a chance.
There are plenty of companies who will give you a chance. Just have to reach out. Start with cement or dump truck companies. They’re always hiring.

Quick question, is dump truck driving worth it? Asking for a friend, thanks.
Yes. Only if you have the passion for driving in that type of environment. Some prefer the open road. It’s all about the individual’s preference.

Does that sticky stuff you call “tack” stick to your tires and cause damage?
It does stick to your tires momentarily. As you drive, it eventually goes away.

Absolutely. Several of my coworkers are in that range. I’d encourage it.

Looks easy but I thought dump trucks was manual transmission
It may seem easy. There’s a lot to learn. Tons of variables. Most new trucks are automatic.
