Each new episode was always the topic of discussion the next day in the breakroom and at lunch. Everyone would retell their favorite bits over lunch. Festivus, Yada, Yada, Yada; Assman; Soup Nazi, Anti-Dentite, Babu Bhatt, Shrinkage, Not That There's Anything Wrong With That, The Contest, Parking Garage, Chinese Restaurant, Library's Detective Bookman, Sponge Worthy, and anything with Newman, George's parents and Jerry's parents and Uncle Leo. If not my favorite, definitely in my top three favorite series of all-time.

@allisterfiend7637 Right. That's how I felt. It takes a few episodes to get the feel of it, and once you do, it's hilarious.
My favorite episode is when Kramer gets Dick Cavett's stage furniture out of the dumpster and has a show of his own in his apartment with it lol
That same episode is the one where Jerry keeps getting his girlfriend drunk so he can play with her nostalgic toys 😂

It’s hard to overstate how culturally significant Seinfeld was in the States in the 90s. It literally ushered in new and lasting lexicon into American English. Things like “double dip” and “mimbo” and “close talker” and “yada yada yada.”
Not to suggest these words were never used before but they were popularized by the show.
It’s probably the most culturally significant show in the US other than perhaps The Sopranos and maybe friends. Certainly the most culturally significant sitcom.

Here's how creative the Seinfeld writers were. They made entire episodes out of:
Waiting for a table at a Chinese restaurant.
    Taking the NYC subway.
Coordinating going to see a movie together.
Forgetting where they parked their car in a parking garage.
Buying a car at a dealership.
But best of all, they did an ENTIRE SEASON where the 2 main characters, Seinfeld and George, pitched an idea for a pilot TV sitcom based on Jerry's everyday life and friends to NBC. Sound familiar? Yes, they did an entire season about how they convinced NBC to do this show, Seinfeld. Based on the idea that "it was a show about NOTHING". In the process, they made fun of the very network and network executives who actually DID GIVE SEINFELD THIS SHOW!! The entire season mocks NBC for allowing SEINFELD and LARRY DAVID (played by George) create an entire sitcom which was "about nothing". That's genius. That is a hilarious premise and masterful writing. They MOCK their own sitcom for an entire season!
And the "show about nothing" concept was a theme for the next 7 years! That's why the series is the best ever.

"The Contest" is a legendary episode, as it should be. ...Another one, perhaps my personal favorite, is the first episode of Season five: "The Opposite:" George concludes that every thought he's ever had, every decision he's ever made... has been wrong. Therefore, the opposite would have to be right. The theory proves sound, as doing the opposite of what his instincts tell him to do in every situation, causes mega wins to cascade into his life. The B and C plots of the ep are good, too.

Seinfeld is addictively observant. Every character has deep flaws that the show exploits for laughter. George lies constantly. Jerry is a best freak. Kramer has no filter. And Elaine desires status and tries to avoid annoyance at all costs.
Having said that Seinfeld’s claim to fame is that it is a show about nothing. Each plot is about something trivial like double dipping a chip or not offending the man who serves soup or stopping for food on the way to visit someone in the emergency room. It’s very human, very flawed, and very funny.

  • @elizabeth5985
    @elizabeth5985 ปีที่แล้ว +1

"Double dipping" has become a part of American vernacular as a result of that episode. I suggest the "Friends" episode called, "The One Where No One's ready." Shot in real time, and we're seeing the tape of the dress rehearsal, because Matt LeBlanc dislocated his shoulder during the taping of the actual show and was taken in an ambulance to the hospital. Still one of the most hilarious episodes of the series.

There are so many episodes that will make you laugh. Like when Elaine broke up with her boyfriend because he took a phone message while she was in the shower and he failed to put an exclamation mark at the end of the sentence that her friend had a baby. Or when George couldn't come up with a good comeback when he got in an argument at work so thought of one later and flew to another city to attend a meeting with the guy so he could goad the guy into insulting him again and he could use his comeback against him. Or when they stopped making Elaine's favorite birth control sponge so she had to put guys through tests to make sure they were sponge-worthy. I could go on and on but don't want to give too many spoilers.

Seinfeld was famously called "a show about nothing." This clip demonstrates how the show mined comedy gold from the way in which the characters' subversion of some mundane social norms in some small way gets blown way out of proportion.
By the way, the actress playing George's girlfriend Betsy is Megan Mullally, who later played the character Karen Walker on the series "Will & Grace," which is another funny comedy series to which you should react.

The four main characters are hilarious on their own, but especially when the gang is all together. Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer. You need to check out two or three episodes at least. 'Master of My Domain' is a classic and so is 'The Soup Nazi'.

The double dip chip was a famous routine from Seinfeld for sure. But I can't honestly say it was hilarious to me. But I did see George's girlfriend was Megan Mullally who was hilarious as Karen on Will and Grace. I'm sure if we go back over episodes we will see many people who became famous later on, like her and Brian Cranston from Breaking Bad.

It’s funny because George screws up his scheme to become the boyfriend and get a cheap rate on the flight by getting into a fight with Timmy over being told not to double dip.

Seinfeld is very character driven, with a *lot* of very colorful secondary/tertiary characters. Getting to know the people is a big part of the show, so it doesn't do all that well as a clip show - you're just missing too much context. Lots of carefully built situations. Overall, a smart comedy, more like Frasier than Rosanne. Famously, the show generated a substantial number of what would now be known as memes - quotes from the show that took on a life of their own.

After the 9th season, Jerry ended the series. He wanted to go out on top. The studio offered them 110 million dollars to do a 10th season, but they held to their principles and turned it down.

Seinfeld was a silly comedy. The episodes sometimes were about nothing really but it was a good show. One of my favorites is The Contest, Season 4 ep 11. It is so funny

"Timmy" nailed that scene. From the first instant his eyebrows raise and he sits up in the chair. He was totally committed to that part. Btw... George's girlfriend in this episode is actress Meagan Mullaly who went on to star as "Karen" in Will & Grace. She is married to Nick Offerman who starred as "Ron Swanson" in Parks and Recreation.

The characters on Seinfeld, especially George and Jerry, always found a way to sabotage their own personal relationships. Additionally, all four characters' individual storylines on any given episode would often intersect in ways that would end up sabotaging each other.

Yeah, I never watched Seinfeld either when I was a kid. I avoided most sitcoms, but when I did watch one, it was Friends, Fresh Prince, or Married with Children. (The Simpsons doesn't count!) But I rediscovered Seinfeld recently and found it refreshingly unabashed.

Seinfeld is considered far superior to all of the other shows you mentioned (although wrong people often prefer Friends lol). One of the most successful sitcoms ever in the U.S. Highly recommend - especially after seeing that you enjoyed the humor in this clip.

      I don't think it's about that necessarily.
Everyone just has a different sense of what they think is funny.
Very few sitcoms appeal to me but I could watch hours on end of stand-up comics, including ones like George Carlin and Lewis Black both of them have very intelligent and extremely funny bits.
I never cared for Jerry Seinfeld as a comic or the show. I understood it just didn't find it funny.😊
