Just so everyone knows: if you factory reset your device it will take care of Step 2 for you. There is no need to sign out of apps if the factory reset does that for you. Additionally, if you have a newish phone you shouldn't be concerned with disk recovery tools as the data is encrypted on the storage. That way you don't have to worry about someone retrieving your data from storage after the fact.

Disagree. You should take extra steps to write over or shred the free storage space just to be certain. Encryption is only effective if there are strong keys and passwords used.
I sign out of all my accounts, factory reset, and then set the phone up with a dummy or guest account, then fill the storage up with random large files like UHD movies and what not. Then perform another factory reset. I've seen suiper geeks bring back chunks of data from a factory reseted Galaxy s22 phone. It's still possible.

Can I just do factory reset on Android?
Will it clear all the stuff?

It's claimed that it does, but I don't trust it. After a factory reset, I set up the phone again with a dummy account or a guest account, and then I connect it to a computer and start dropping large movie files on it to fille it up. Then I deleted those files, and add more to it, and deleted them again. Then i do another factory reset.
It might be overkill, but think about all the stuff you do on your personal mobile devices in the course of a day let alone a couple years.

    Better steps for iPhone:
1-back up your phone to your Mac with a cable and turn on encrypted backup
2-simply press “erase/transfer phone”in general under iPhones settings and it will sign you out of iCloud and all apps and erase your phone.

If you’ve ever tried to resell or trade in your old phone, was the process relatively simple or was it a challenge to get your phone to the finish line?

Fun fact for android users when you delete everything on your phone anyone can restore what you deleted from your device and it’s all done with an app.
