I think the line "I put up a fight but never won a battle" is Stephen Jr's poetic way of saying he fought like hell to not become his dad, but in the end it was futile. And now he realizes that was regretful. He loved his dad, he just may not have appreciated it (or even knew it) when he was young.

I completely agree with you! I booked tickets for a Brothers Osborne concert because I knew that SWJ was opening for them and I was able to meet him! He is such a kind hearted soul and a lyrical genius.
