Personally, I find the beliefs which people claim to be protecting from socialism are often what spur me to ascribe to it. Those ideas of the rule of law, the universal dignity of human life, cooperation and freedom. Socialism in my country has been used to expand opportunities and lives, especially through a socialised health care system. True freedom must come from the absence of fear, and true respect of human dignity shouldn’t allow people to live in poverty while some have wealth they could spend a lifetime counting. This also doesn’t have to be utopian. Decent welfare states have been achieved in social democratic countries in Europe and exist today. They used to be a lot more common, but they still exist. A democracy which have socialised welfare states and nationalised services, that’s pretty much the dream as of right now. Sure it may become more ambitious as goals are met, but if people don’t like that they don’t have to vote for it. Those values though of the rule of law, dignity of mankind, responsibility and freedom though are the most important things. I don’t believe in those things because I’m a socialist, I am a socialist because I believe in those things. I think a lot of world leaders have forgotten the importance of those values, how precious they are and how they need to be secured. It’s why scientific socialism, the belief in socialism because it’s more efficient than capitalism, has never sat well with me. Conviction and belief should always be of the heart, even if policy is of the brain. Only then can you act with honesty and integrity. That’s my two cents on it anyway

Yeah, but he's a special case. He had been under extreme psychological stress. The relief mission had been delayed multiple times, one crewmember even almost went insane. So the other crewmember went back to earth together leaving him alone. Imagine staying on the moon alone for weeks on end. Then he discovers his son had a braindeath. Add on top of that, he had no one there physically to grieve with.

The USSR and its predecessor in the Russian Empire had been invaded by Germany, via Poland, twice in the twentieth century, so they used buffer states in Eastern Europe to ensure any land invasion would not be fought in Soviet soil, especially as over 20 million Soviet people died during WWII. The Soviet desire for buffer states came about because they felt insecure, they weren’t just being some malicious empire hell-bent on world conquest. They were, fundamentally, terrified of the west, especially as Marxist-Leninist theory claimed the capitalist world would fight itself and that wasn’t happening. As a result, the USSR felt hemmed in to the corner of the world
I mean Communism did show itself to be lacking in its competition with capitalism. No one would deny that living standards in West Germany were better than East Germany, and that South Korea is better than North Korea to live in. Of course, America is not totally innocent here, and constantly backed coups against regimes they considered to be too socialist, especially in the Americas. That being said, democracies could flourish under the US in a way that was impossible under the USSR.
Life in the communist eastern bloc was probably better than you think but still nowhere near as good as the capitalist world. I wouldn’t describe it as hell on earth, though China under Mao and the USSR under Stalin do come close, because both the USSR and China did eventually normalise their countries somewhat and people could have predictable lives.
I would disagree somewhat that capitalism doesn’t require force, coercion, social engineering and manipulation. There are well documented cases of capitalist countries coercing their citizenry and companies doing the same. US and British strikers in the 1920s and before were often shot at by police with live rounds. Capitalist regimes in the Americas launched some pretty brutal campaigns against their own people, including the Argentine ‘Dirty War’. The US too has implemented dictatorships in countries to secure the interests of US companies, such as the United Fruit Company in Central America or the Oil companies in the Middle East. These aren’t as bloody as some communist regimes’ actions, but it shows that the US’ moral high ground is a bit shaky
As for use of force and coercion, communists do kind of back that. Communism is a broad church with competing interpretations, but Marx’s writings do suggest coercion will be necessary. For Marx, history was violent and totally about class struggle. The development of capitalism into communism via socialism was an inevitable part of history, and would be achieved by the violent overthrow of the bourgeoisie and the institution of a dictatorship of the proletariat. Violence was a part of the doctrine. To make people into true communists, you had to coerce them using the forces of coercion: bureaucracy, police and military. These forces, after all, were used by capitalist countries to ensure the rule of the bourgeoisie. It made sense that they should be used by the proletariat to avoid exploitation.
Now I and plenty of other socialists disagree with a lot of this. Marx was not the founder of socialism anyway, there were older radicals and theorists such as Richard Owen. I agree that using violent coercion is not the answer and that socialism should be built on consent, not on violence. I think socialism should be ready to meet violence or any other challenge with those same acts, but this has to be defensive and never to attack. The rule of law, essential dignity of mankind and responsibility are all things all politicians should embody.

Personally, I find the beliefs which people claim to be protecting from socialism are often what spur me to ascribe to it. Those ideas of the rule of law, the universal dignity of human life, cooperation and freedom. Socialism in my country has been used to expand opportunities and lives, especially through a socialised health care system. True freedom must come from the absence of fear, and true respect of human dignity shouldn’t allow people to live in poverty while some have wealth they could spend a lifetime counting. This also doesn’t have to be utopian. Decent welfare states have been achieved in social democratic countries in Europe and exist today. They used to be a lot more common, but they still exist. A democracy which have socialised welfare states and nationalised services, that’s pretty much the dream as of right now. Sure it may become more ambitious as goals are met, but if people don’t like that they don’t have to vote for it.
Those values though of the rule of law, dignity of mankind, responsibility and freedom though are the most important things. I don’t believe in those things because I’m a socialist, I am a socialist because I believe in those things. I think a lot of world leaders have forgotten the importance of those values, how precious they are and how they need to be secured. It’s why scientific socialism, the belief in socialism because it’s more efficient than capitalism, has never sat well with me. Conviction and belief should always be of the heart, even if policy is of the brain. Only then can you act with honesty and integrity. That’s my two cents on it anyway

Yeah, but he's a special case. He had been under extreme psychological stress. The relief mission had been delayed multiple times, one crewmember even almost went insane. So the other crewmember went back to earth together leaving him alone.
Imagine staying on the moon alone for weeks on end. Then he discovers his son had a braindeath. Add on top of that, he had no one there physically to grieve with.

Problem is in reality Russia's government and the West don't share equitable moral values, and probably never will since they're not really challenged on it. Realistically the only things that could drive Russia and the West together would be a massive cultural and governmental change, or increased hostilities between Russia and China causing Russia to ally itself more closely with the United States and Europe.

Only so long as nobody can enforce a claim, when somebody develops the tech for it, it becomes their property. RIght now the US plans a permanent presence on the moon and subsquently mars, in effect they are force projecting into space and can then lay down roots and from there permanent claim.
