Even though he plays that well, he is modest enough to keep talking about how he should further develop his technique. What a great inspiration for us.
it makes me feel like even though I just am someone who prints off difficult charts and goes in my basement on my big kit to practice them as a hobby its totally OK for me to spend as long as I need to learn this stuff. He is the type of drummer (especially being one of the best in the world) who makes the hobbyist drummer not feel intimidated or pushed away, and that just adds to my respect for him like you said.
Mangini's drum cam makes you appreciate him even more. Seeing how soft and elegant he is on the kit, yet still able to produce a nice and strong sound. Goes to show that you don't need to beat the shit out of the drums to be powerful. Playing like that ensures longevity as well. It's awesome!
@@dudydude3287 I believe he mentioned something in another video about him practicing something akin to the "1-inch punch" from Bruce Lee, in where he tries to hit his kit as hard as he can but from as minimum of a distance as possible.
Thank you for the upload, Mr. Mangini. I appreciate you taking the time to give us this content. These 'drumcam' videos are great educational (as well as jaw-dropping) content. Stereo mix, along with a nice camera angle, allows one to come closer to deconstructing the madness that is a Dream theater song. Bravo, and thanks once again! Cheers!
This is indeed a very fun song drumming wise. I hate beating dead horses. But I did come to this video after watching old Portnoy's videos and he is warm as a dog while MM looks cold as a cryogenic robot :-)
5:00 is my favorite moment :-) I remember blasting Pale Blue Dot in the car while driving. When this moment came, I thought someone was banging on my door. Was a surreal feeling for that tiny moment.
patton303 I’ve heard mixed reports. Gotta ask the drum tech or monitor engineer I guess. Most of their video content isn’t worth being synced to and is just general background images so It must have only been 1-2 songs per night.
@pieces of8t yeah he is talented, but not for that reason. If yout take a look at the video that extremely ridiculous with no real strokes but rather some optimised shit score a record that has way more to with sport than actual music
I know its ten years too late but I for one would like to say THANK YOU for saving Dream Theater. Your drumming is really awesome and you helped them move forward for another decade.
I'm (seeing your username) am actually taking this as a true statement. The last two DT albums prior to the change were getting too metal and stale for me.....the band needed a change, I never expected it to be behind the drum set but I truly think it was for the best. Mike, you're a monster and an amazingly humble person for someone in your position....keep being you
might sound funny but too metal is deffinitely where portnoy was taking the band to. MPs vocals were great as backing though. just that recent albums hes bringing his vocals where it shouldnt be. all things happen for a reason.
Raul yeah MP wanted Mikeal from Opeth to do that part and JP was like I don’t think our fans will like it. But I saw Mikeal do it on the progressive nation tour and it was godly.
Thank you for providing this Drum Cam, knowing that it was recorded and I witnessed it in my country is a gift for Dream-Theater fans, here in Chile 🤘🏼🇨🇱🤘🏼 ... A master hug
This video greatly illustrates how incredibly melodic the orchestrations (especially on the cymbals) of Mike's drum parts are. Very musical, I think that's an aspect of drumming (the composition of the part) that a lot of people tend to overlook.
Mike the master Mangini the drummer that every drummer wishes they could be what a f n goat my all time favorite Thanks Mike for putting in a gazillion hours of practice for our pleasure thanks a million bro
i've never been a DT fan until now !!! ...,Mike's playing feels so heavy and musical theres no need to beating the shit out the kit . please we need more drum cams
One of the things that is striking about Mike's drumming is how he is totally unafraid of leaving gaps, like the paper showing through as white on an oriental painting. That takes tremendous courage.
Admiro muito você e o Dream Theater! Já ouvi todos os álbuns dessa banda já perdi a conta. E com você na batera não é diferente. Tudo que voce gravou me inspirou, é muito lindo! Grande, Mike! Adoro ver você tocando! Grato por postar esse vídeo !!! Mike "Genius" mangini!!!!
Reminiscing and appreciating MM. Mixed feelings about his departure. The spirit carries on in DT with MP returning and hopefully that doesn't become a negative for all concerned. It would be perfect seeing the DT guys work with MM on side projects that would be different from, but like LTE, PSMS, etc. I hope future collaborations with MM would be welcomed right away and especially if negativity starts being generated because of the change. I wish the best for all involved and welcome MP back, though not as enthusiastically.
total respect for Manjini!!! this man is like a metronome!!!! Portnoy must be having difficult times to learn this !!!!! and as we all know, DT is well known for playing exactly like the song was made!!!!!
I have a tendency to dislike comments who refer to this as not musical or that it doesn't have groove or feel. According to who? Music is subjective in a way. To me, it fits the music perfectly and the other members of the band who are terrible musicians think the same. It is a brilliant drum performance, period.

It took me awhile to figure this out too. The opening part is in 19/16. After they reprise the opening part again and they start that instrumental bit, they're actually playing in the same tempo, but they are playing to quarter note quintuplets (5 notes for every 2 quarter notes). "I change things here and there and evolve all songs over time." this makes me so happy because I have always played the same way
This song finally has you shining like the other members, hope to see more crazy drumming like this in the future of DT!
Mike is a symbol of excellent! Flawless. With this kind of beating.. DT can go for another 100 years.
sadly they won't. now comes the second portnoy era.
