Heh :) The moment your boat first pulled in to the jetty, I just thought... "Hang on, they've put an awful lot of work into that water...". I'm glad to see that impression wasn't wrong :D
I believe they worked with a company called Crest for their water physics. I wonder if Sea of Thieves uses something similar, as there is quite a resemblance. :)
I really love that crafting pulls from storage. And hearing that there’s no curfew is icing on the cake. I hate having to cut an activity short to run home to bed to avoid any penalties for not sleeping and passing out. Will have to give this game a go
I'm used to Minecraft but when you mentioned the no curfew thing, I realized "Of course there's no curfew, you can play as a bat!" Unfortunately, at least from the demo, it seems like all the villagers have a human sleep schedule, but I think it would be cool if later versions added nocturnal or even crepuscular npcs!
That would be cool to have a hopping nightlife scene on Critter Cove. I wonder if the tourists ever visit at night as the town progresses. But you're right, it's pretty empty at night aside from Copperbottom. :)
Honestly i love games like subnautica and raft for their underwater play, so that is a big plus for me, being able to decorate an entire town instead of a small house is great too, but what sold me was the fact that not everyone will be a mickey mouse in personality
Okay the farming under water had me! I also LOVE the personalities, this gives me the animal crossing love! Totally going to play the demo. Thank you for this review! Super excited to play this.
I can 100% agree that I was SO wrong about this game back when I played it last year in beta. What an amazing turn around this game made. I'm so happy to be playing it. :) Great video!
It does have some kinks to be worked out, especially with animations and audio, but as-is, it's hours of fun with a lot of unique features. The water is my fave. ❤️
Quick question about the character creation- does you species affect gameplay at all? Like, does being a fish let you breathe underwater; or does being a rabbit give you high jumps and things like that? It doesn't seem like it, but I thought I'd ask just in case! I'd love love LOVE aspects like that. Not a deal breaker if there's nothing like that, but still!
Nope, your choices are purely cosmetic as far as I know. :) Now the new game Chef RPG allows you to select human or android, and there ARE differences based on these choices.
ngl i was looking for a solid look at the game that got to the point, and you did it! i might pick up the game now, it seems pretty relaxed and less limited/rushed like other games in it's genre. also nice to see it's not just a kids game and has at least a little bit of bite to it
You're welcome! I have attention issues and try to make my videos concise enough that I would watch them. 🤪 I'm 32 hours into Critter Cove now, and it's SO tough to stop. There's always something I'm trying to achieve, and I love how there's no curfew to make it feel stressful. ♥
Thanks for this. I already have Ova magica in my games library and enjoyed the heck out of it, but had no idea this game existed (it's by the same developers).
Played a couple of the testing phases and avoided the demo to come at it fresh. (I know the demo save can carry on - I just got disappointed when I reached the end of what was available and didn't want to get there again) I think there was a curfew in testing, glad that's no longer an issue. Also glad they now have box crafting, had to carry what you needed back then. Soon as I saw the octopus head I made an Princess Cthulhu, in deep sea greens and purples and hypnotic eyes, just in case I can be as mean as a certain lizard 😁
What's strange is my game didn't carry over...I think because I played the playtest and not the demo. But starting over was kinda fun to experience everything fresh. It's a solid cute game atm. ♥
Loved this video! It got me more hyped then I already was! This game seems amazing and has everything I look for in a game times a million! I can’t wait till it comes to console! I don’t have a PC.
I locked in about 170+ hours into the demo and I got the Early Access as soon as its released. Currently have about 66 hours into the early access and I have been playing the game nonstop for many days. XD The character creator is SO expansive that it is so overwhelming. You can pretty much mix and match anything you like to create a hybrid. XD The game is constantly getting patched to fix minor bugs and glitches thanks to everyone in the Critter Cove discord server, the developers are very active there and I implore you all to join that server, the people there are very chill ^^ Honestly, the water exploring and the character creator is what made me decide to try the game out! :D
You are a legend...170 hours??!!! I was proud of my 35 hours in the current version, lol! But you're right about the support in Discord and by the devs. I honestly had no idea I'd like Critter Cove as much as I do, as I didn't give the demo enough time to suck me in. 😁
I fell in love with this game playing the demo and eagerly awaited the EA release. It has not disappointed!! I'm obsessed. It's so great and I'm excited to see it grow and get even better.
Co-op would be a lot of fun...maybe if the game is successful, they'll consider it, but I know that adds a ton of logistical headaches. Right now, I'd rate Critter Cove an 8.5/10...just some quirks to iron out such as audio fading, animation smoothing, and a couple quest bugs. ♥
Is it because you have to use the right joystick to "steer" when swimming/boating? I play on controller on PC, and it's strange that the left stick doesn't steer the boat, you do so by "looking around" with the right stick. But yeah, it's a really cute, fun game with lots more content coming. ♥
I have been obsessed with this game since I downloaded it. So far, my biggest struggle is fishing. I can’t figure out how to use the lures! The wiki needs a lot of help. lol.
Wait, did they change the fishing? I haven't had time to play this past week, but there was NO fishing game, just press the reel button when the text said the fish was biting.
Loved the demo of the game, looking forward to playing the early access. The entire time i was playing though I was thinking "dude this would be SO cool if i could play with friends and they could claim some of the other destroyed houses." I know the devs are focussing on making the game as good as it can be first but after early access I reallllyyy hope for them to add multiplayer.
You just painted an amazing picture of multiplayer...I hadn't even thought about them claiming a house, but that would be AWESOME!! I'm guessing that would be really difficult for Critter Cove's small team (I think it's two brothers doing the programming and one graphics artist handling the design), but if the game does well enough, maybe they can make it happen in 1.0!
I recently tried the demo for this, it's pretty awesome so far! Loved the character custom, though I think I rushed it a bit to get to the game 😅 I was amused with Pokee xD like ohey sass/rude in an artstyle that looks friendly haha. Was like waiting for my character to pass out or get caught by the curfew police or something, but was glad I could continue into the night and the next morning :D May pick up the full game when I get the chance xD
It's a cute game and your character is super cute. I participated in 2 playtests and absolutely loved it, including Pokee.🦎 I feel tempted to get it now, but having played quite a few alpha releases of games I feel a bit burnt out by wipes and starting anew. Even though developers try to avoid that, often times it has to be done. Hating to start all over again I guess I'll rather try to wait for full release.
I am obsessed with this game and I haven't even got to play It yet. Because I am a console player so I have to wait the long road to console . So I'm jealous of everyone who gets to play rhe game now.
Aw, it's tough to wait for games to come to console! 😥 But the good news is by the time it arrives, all the kinks should be worked out and the story complete.
Saw game few times for you page watch one video seems interesting hope add multiplayer. After full release and sortas i think friend like would it like it i would love play with them.
Normal Player: Animal/Furry only. Furry Player: Animal/Furry only. I don't get it, why nobody players select human? I'm so confused. Btw, This game is still early access. development planning full release for the future... I hope game is not dead. 😐☕
You CAN play as a human...I just didn't because I enjoy being able to create fun animal characters. From what I read, the team was creating cute animals to visit Critter Cove (like in Animal Crossing) and decided to keep the animal variations for players to select. ♥
PS players do seem to get few new games, about the same as Switch. Sadly, with Microsoft owning XBox, I think that's why that console gets games first along with PC. 😕
You had me at no curfew.
Right? WHY don't more games do this? It's so nice to go AFK and do a couple chores around the house then pop back to playing. ♥
Heh :) The moment your boat first pulled in to the jetty, I just thought... "Hang on, they've put an awful lot of work into that water...". I'm glad to see that impression wasn't wrong :D

Both of these definitely alleviate a ton of anxiety that many "cozy" games include. ♥

It's a REALLY fun game if you enjoyed Animal Crossing, and the underwater mechanics are quite unique and engaging. ♥

@@BuckeyeBunny Completely agree! I basically live in the water now! hahaha
Great review, very useful. I was on the fence, but this review helped. Thank you.
Happy to help; it's really a superb game for those who like Animal Crossing style life sims. ♥

Every creature in my fantasy world breathes water, with their lungs only and plus they're fireproof too.
Another great video and I love that the characters can be rude to you. Going to have to think about adding this game to my list.
I'll let you know if they add shotties to the game. 🤣

I think Critter Cove is developed and self-published by Gentleman Rat Studios...not sure about Ova Magica.

The devs DO plan to bring Critter Cove to console, but it won't be until around 2026 when they exit out of early access. :(

It literally just needs coop and it would be 10/10

I’m loving this game ❤ The only ‘problem’ I’m having is the swimming! I’m playing on a steam deck and swimming is a bit of a challenge 🫣
