    Catherine Zeta-Jones was actually pregnant during the making of this movie, which makes her skill all the more impressive. And to be fair to Renee Zellweger, I always took her more awkward, less skilled dancing and singing to be a part of the character; after all, talent isn't always a necessary ingredient in becoming a star, Roxie has her notoriety instead.

    • @hectorsmommy1717
      @hectorsmommy1717 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      She was NOT pregnant while filming. That is an urban legend that will not die. She was pregnant with Carys when she accepted the Oscar in April 2003. Filming took place Dec 10, 2001 - May 2002. She got pregnant a couple of months AFTER they filmed.

      For someone who learned for the role, Renee was amazing. Keep in mind...Debbie Reynolds was also not trained as a dancer, and was put through rigorous training for her role in 'Singing In The Rain'. Many artists have had to do tons for such pivotal roles.
      Renee was Roxie all the way.

    Cellblock tango is my favorite song. When my sister and I went to see this movie we sang this for months, even now I will randomly call her and start singing parts and she will finish the lines. 🤣🤣This movie is the best I love this just as much as I love Hairspray.

  • @candicelitrenta8890
    @candicelitrenta8890 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Katherine is a professional dancer where as Rene is an actress, not so much the musical kind. But she fits the look of the real Roxie Hart from the history book. And I think she in this as the character is more of a wannabe performer rather than one who was trained in it. By the way, you really need to check out Bridget Jones Diary with Renee. She got an academy award nomination for it and it is hysterical. She really can act and has won an award for a different film.

  • @frederickseltzerjr2170

    Fun facts - this movie won 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture becoming only the 2nd musical to win to biggest prize ("Oliver" won Best Picture in 1968)
    Catherine Zeta-Jones, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Velma but for me made her win so much more was that her dancing so much more was she was pregnant filming this movie.
    Renee Zellweger was nominated for Best Actress, John C. Reilly was nominated for Best Supporting Actor & Queen Latifah also was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. One award it definitely deserve was Best Costume Design.
    Renee beat out Jennifer Aniston for the role of Roxie & Richard Gere accepted the role after John Travolta turned down the role of Billy Flynn.
    There was a cameo in the movie a prostitute named Nickie and was played by Chita Rivera, who originated the role of Velma Kelly when Chicago debut on Broadway in 1975.
    To be fair in "Cell Block Tango," the first murderer did warn Ernie that if he popped that gum one more time ... and like a guy, he did and had to pay the price. But my favorite is "he ran into my knife ... he ran into my life TEN TIMES!"

    Here's the thing about Roxie and Velma. They're not nice people. They never were. Roxie knew how to put on a sweet act but she was never a nice person. Velma was just always like that. But they come out on top, because somehow or other they just do, we never have to worry about what happens to them next, they'll be fine. The story acts like they're the heroes but the story knows they're not.

    This one has got to be one of the best reactions I've ever seen. Such a great movie - Music, dance, story, meaningful lessons. I had forgotten all about it, and here we are. Richard Gere actually did that tap dancing (or at least in the full body shots.) The companion to this is the movie 'All That Jazz', about the amazing talent of Bob Fosse, and the price he paid with his success. Possibly the best movie musical ever made.

    I LOVE this musical and movie and I'm so happy to see you enjoy it just as much! Queen Latifah was an absolute hit here! I will say, that I attribute Roxie's awkwardness more to the character than the actress (Renee Zelwegger) mostly because she's supposed to be a woman who dreams of being a star but was only ever a chorus girl for some time. So she really wouldn't have any talent aside from singing. Just my 2 cents tho!

      Several stories. The musical was based on a 1926 play written by a court house reporter. She based her play on true stories and trials she reported on.

    • @oliverbrownlow5615
      @oliverbrownlow5615 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original play was also called *Chicago,* but it was previously filmed in a non-musical version called *Roxie Hart* (1942), starring Ginger Rogers (who, ironically, was a great musical comedy star, most famously the dance partner of Fred Astaire in a number of movies).

      There is an excellent book published in 2010 called "The Girls of Murder City: Fame, Lust, and the Beautiful Killers who Inspired Chicago" by Douglas Perry. He goes into several of the stories, including the woman who inspired the Hungarian woman. She was found guilty and sentenced to hang because she couldn't get anyone to represent her and the press condemned her right away . . . all because she could not speak English, was not beautiful and did not dress well. The two women who inspired Velma and Roxie gave her a makeover and loaned her clothes for her appeal and she was granted a new trial where the charges were dropped.

    You are spot on with the dance and singing abilities of both Catherine and Rene. Catherine is a professional dancer and so is her character Velma Kelly. Rene had to learn how to dance and sing but her character Roxy Hart is also new at performing. So in that context they both did well. But I also agree that when you see such a seasoned dancer it is difficult to not compare the two performances. If I remember correctly Catherine was pregnant during the filming which is why she looked more voluptuous.

    Roxie isn't supposed to be the best talent. That's the reason she had to sleep her way to the top. And also the reason she couldn't find the RIGHT men to sleep with

    The casting in this is top notch! One of the best movie musical casts ever. Queen Latifah as Mama Morton is ICONIC, Katherine Zeta Jones is a whole vibe, Renée Zellweger is amazing as Roxie, Richard Geere as the lawyer is spot on for him, Christine Baranski is always a pleasure

    I'm usually not a big fan of musicals, but this movie is a rare exception. I like that each song is its own cabaret performance, unlike other musicals where there's no dialog - just nonstop singing. I love this time period, acting/singing is top tier, Queen Latifah stole the show, Catherine deserved all the awards. Favorite movie.
    Your reaction, as always, didn't disappoint. Thank you for this video and for reminding me how great this film is. ♥

    Very widely unknown fact but the book then musical and then movie all were based on two famous murderesses in the 20's of 20 century. Both got free from jail due to media. One of them died afterwards due to TB at age 28 and the other died in her 80ies.

    I really would love to see you do a reaction to the movie Pumping Iron starring Arnold Schwarzenegger who was a Bodybuilder in fact if you found a male Bodybuilder in a Dumpster would you reprimand him for being in the Dumpster in the first place and then would you give him a bath to wash and Scrub his Big Rippling Muscles 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪.

    Real shame Christine Baransky didn't have a bigger part. Easily the best actress of them all, and so musically gifted (not that Zeta-Jones or Queen Latifah are bad, of course).
