Why is Singapore so rich, and what is the dark secret?
They had one asset going for them... the Location!
Having access to the Strait of Malacca, which is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world that connects Africa and India to China and SEA...
They knew there was a lot of movement of goods and people through that area, and they could build a country with great intangibles to attract exporters and traders...
👉🏼 A stable government and thus, a stable economy
👉🏼 Robust legal system for inter-country agreements and dispute resolution
👉🏼 Tax incentives such as 0 capital gains and low corporate tax ~17%
Once they attracted companies to set up regional HQs here... they worked on aspects that would make it a fabulous place to stay...
👉🏼 Great public transport
👉🏼 Best of healthcare facilities
👉🏼 Entertainment options
Of course it’s cheaper to do it for a country smaller than New York City... and then you attract all the wealthy who bring in an AUM worth almost USD 4 Trillion to this island!
👉🏼 And here’s a common aspect that I’ve noticed all such countries to follow which is barely spoken about - Singapore, Dubai, Rwanda...
They all have governments that suppress the media and control the narrative. People are afraid to speak against the government!
Like they drive their economy out of economic shambles by controlling the narrative till the time the world begins to believe the idea of stability so strongly and actually starts bringing in the money through FDIs.
And I feel if India wishes to emulate this, the GIFT city is one such start...
You combine the infra and ecosystem of Gurgaon and the incentives of GIFT into one - and oh boy, I think we can beat the best of financial centres in the world.
