Hey, do you have to learn all those technical grammar things? Like how all those tenses work, and basically all those technical things us native speakers have no idea about.

Hey Ryan! Great video! My certification experience was a bit different from yours, but we ended up in roughly the same place (italki.)
I had 4 years of FrenchFL classroom experience in the USA and 2 years of teaching EFL in Martinique just with an MA in French. I got a 120-hour TEFL online with no practical component right before I moved to Vietnam to teach in a kids' English center and then IELTS prep at a university. I also have a fake TESOL certificate. I say "fake" because it is only accepted by the company who required/provided it. 🤔
I think you should make a video about how to choose a reputable certification program. It's difficult to tell the difference between the ones that are actually accredited and the ones who just say they are. I'm not 100% sure that my TEFL is legit, but nobody has questioned it in the past 7 years, so...

Thank you for sharing your experience Hayley. That’s a brilliant suggestion - I’ll be sure to publish a video on that topic. Cheers!

@@EnglishTeacherRyan This is where I'm at right now. So which should I take first, Tesl or Tefl? I would appreciate any direction you can give. I want to teach online initially.

Is it worth it to take a course online that's from another country? I got my TEFL from a UK based organization. Just wanted to know if it's acceptable for TESOL also? 😊

Hey Amber - great question! Typically, no, the important thing is that the institution that you got the accreditation from is official and reputable. From general employability in private institutions, that's the important thing.
However, in the Canadian context and in my case, it was important for my to gain accreditation from a Canadian institution because I wanted to be certified for TESL Canada. So, it may depend on your situation.
      Hope that helps!
