Thank you for showing this in a notebook. And not iPad or similar. Paper free is great but not everyone can afford it and a lot of students still use paper and the best we can do for now is dream of paper free while we still actually need to improve study methods. So this video makes these methods accessible for a greater majority. Plus it alleviates the idea that we need expensive products in order to be productive.
I have an iPad and apple pencil but still prefer taking notes and learning from paper. I feel like I remember it better + it really hurts your eyes and your head starting at a screen all day and very up close. Plus writing on paper just feels nice imo
Going paper-free isn’t as sustainable as people often think. Paper is a completely renewable resource and is completely recyclable. That means that we can reuse the paper we use over and over again and we can plant trees to replace the ones used for paper. Electronics like iPad and laptops, on the other hand, are often made with many types of rare metals that are found by mining (which by the way, is usually terrible for the environment) and which are completely not recyclable. This means that most if not all the parts of your iPads and laptops will end up in the landfill even if you bring them to a recycling center. Please pass this information around, especially to people who suggest to you that they are going paper-free for the environment. Going paper-free can reduce clutter and (possibly) make you more organized, but it isn’t “great” as it encourages the purchase of electronics that are really quite terrible for the earth. We should be consuming non-sustainable tech at a bare minimum, and thankfully paper is a sustainable option for many types of needs, like note-taking.
Emma MacDonald I agree completely what you said about how electronic buying is not great for the environment however the other parts that go along with this method also produce waste. Just think about how many pens, pencils, highlighters, plastic folders/dividers that people use when taking note with paper. I’m currently upgrading from an iPad Air (had for 4 years) to the new iPad Pro and I believe that this device will benefit me greatly as I will continue to use it in my studies for the next 4-6 years. And before anyone says anything “YOU DO YOU”. I’m not pushing the paper free lifestyle on anyone here im just elegising to the fact that no one can be completely sustainable 😃
Recovering Soul um I feel like physical notes and that sort of thing is lost more easily. You can save files into the cloud and as long as you use the same account you can access them from practically any device and for a long time. I can’t imagine the amount of important notes and books I’ve lost while moving house or just over time.
@@usamarafieck1715 our teacher told about it. It's not exactly the same, obviously. But in the index, you write the symbol for the respective information and then use the symbols throughout the textbook. Very easy and practical.

Wow I'm so happy that Notion is sponsoring you! Good job 💖 Notion does a good job with advertising, because Mariana basically already loved the product, so hearing an actual advertisement from her side is as natural as in the other videos where she talks why she likes it.
I have an idea for people who like the flow notes method but find it hard to study off of/understand days later. Take the flow notes during the class/lecture, and then after (while the info is retained and you understand your notes), make a neat, structured, version of the notes. It doesn't need to be anything fancy. It does take a bit of time to redo your notes, but you can understand your notes, study off of them, and make sense of them later. It's worth the effort, I promise.
It's good to hear of alternative approaches to note taking. It seems that almost everyone keeps repetitively speaking about the same tired methods, as if they are the only ones that work. To make it worse, they sometimes even denounce the others as ineffective without regard to the fact that different individuals learn by different ways.
I take notes digitally and I discovered the split page method myself and I knew it would be part of it! It’s helpful for me so I can find a topic easier than scrolling
I LOVE drawing a line in the middle of my page and taking outline notes with two columns! Always hated wasting space when doing outline notes and as soon as I realized I could do this I never looked back! Also useful for lessons where u only need half a page for all the general info!
I'm especially happy to be introduced to the Morse Code and Flow Notes methods. I can see myself utilizing those two methods and it's very refreshing to discover new notetaking methods rather than seeing the same ones again!
The Morse the and Sentence ones sounds great to me, I think it will fit nicely to the system I already have. So refreshing to see truly different methods that add something to the same old same, thank you for this video!
The flow note system would be so helpful for my discussion based class because we often start with one topic and go off in tons of different directions and talk about different things but connect them back to the original idea/point we were focusing on (Theory of Knowledge course for the IB students out there) it’s completely unstructured and sometimes I feel like I forget everything we talked about because I don’t take any notes
Combination of QEC with morse code method really helps me doing lazy-annotation, as someone whose read laid-back, but still want to taking note of of the books I've read. It's super helpful.
I was the entire time like "I think the notes are in French, doesn't looks like English". Then you showed that book "História da (something I wasn't able to read)" and read the pages and then I realised that was PORTUGUESE. As a brazilian, seu inglês é perfeito AAAAAAAA fiquei feliz.
I am currently a junior in college and got a really low gpa last semester, so I've been watching note-taking videos to hopefully improve the way I study and take notes. I completely forgot I was subscribed to this channel when I used to be obsessed with note-taking videos and I'm glad I came back (I never unsubscribed, I just forgot about this channel lmao) because this video is exactly what I needed
Ive finished high school already but now I wish someone had actually taught me to study, make decent notes, review, and write essays. I just rocked up to school and the teacher said “write an essay on...”. That was it. I hope this helped students who were never taught any of this stuff.
I have done split page, morse code (a little different tho, I shift my reading to the left of my page so there is a space on the right, I write key word & vocabulary next to paragraph and instead of highlighting a huge block of paragraph, I highlight the side of the paragraph), flow notes throughout the years and have helped me. The point of notes is to be able to read what you wrote almost immediately. If your notes are hard to read, you may need to change the way your note structure work.
I always find me watching these kinds of videos and yet I haven’t been in school for over a decade, I don’t take adult classes, and my job doesn’t require any writing of any kind haha. Yet I can’t stop watching these hahah
The split page method works well because of how your brain structures things. The shorter width keeps things more condensed, and your brain can “see” the entire paragraph or phrase without having to scan with your eyes.
I've done some experiments with yet another method of making notes for problem solving and idea creation - here's a short summary. I use the following three building blocks, which I can combine in different ways. Building block 1 - the sheet layout: I use an A4 sheet in landscape format and divide it in 3x3 boxes of equal size - there's no need for exactness and I do it without a ruler. Alternatively, I can use 3 columns and make boxes of different sizes - but at the beginning, 3x3 boxes are easier to handle. I fill the boxes in column 1, then in column 2 and then in column 3. Building block 2 - the box layout: I use each box for a simple small mind map. The size limit of the box will come as a surprise, but it has a number of advantages which I will describe in a moment. Instead of mind maps, I can use diagrams, ordinary text with indentations or math terms. Building block 3 - thinking tools: I can use thinking tools as topics for the small mind maps, to stimulate my thinking about the problem, like: What are key questions? What are my options? How can I split the problem into smaller parts? I find a personal collection of thinking tools very useful - I have a corkboard over my work table and can access dozens of tools and stimuli with one glance. For me, this process has four main advantages. First, a conventional mind maps works best with a couple of main branches of equal size. In problem solving however, I often want to develop only one or two branches over many steps, and this leads to an unsymmetrical, unbalanced mind map. Secondly, moving from one box to the next needs a moment of orientation - where do I stand, and what can I do next? This re-orientation happens much more often in the 3x3 layout than in an ordinary mind map. Thirdly, I find it easier to reflect on a previous thought in a new box than in a branch of an ordinary mind map. Fourth, the combination of mind maps and thinking tools seems very powerful to me. Some remarks: Depending on handwriting size, paper size and personal taste, we can experiment with 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4 boxes. As a fourth building block I'm using a zettelkasten to organize my sheets - but that's outside the scope of this comment.
Although this is sponsored video, I must say that Notion is an amazing app to take notes. I heartily appreciate its smartness, especially building a second brain that is the best way to store all instant ideas. Thank you for your video.
Flow note taking is the best when doing calculations! For as long as I’ve been doing math it’s been the way my mind processes and understands the steps in calculations and it’s the best way to not get confused when you get to Calc 3 or differential equations or doing a Quantum hw problem lolol
Thank you! A very helpful video, as always 😅 For me, as a literature student, I struggle a lot in classes (mostly in literature history subjects) because teachers talk about a ton of different aspects in just one session (authors’ biographies, art movements, specific books’ analysis) and I discovered that Flow method is perfect for those subjects 💕
this is the best study/note taking video on youtube. The QEC method seems great for students who understand concepts broken all the way down with structure.
I love Notion! Started usin it because of your videos, I started with the free version and it is great and as soon as you start understanding and adding things it makes a lot of sense to pay the full version to add unlimited pages
So I happen to follow this steps before finding the video in my recommendation and I am smiling ear to ear for the entire video knowing I have evolved a lot with my note taking over the years
Omg are you Brazilian? This is so nice.. TH-cam recommended me the video and I saw that one of the books is in Portuguese! Very nice video! Love from Brazil ❤️🇧🇷
Mariana, thanks for sharing! I'm translating the content you shared to portuguese to share in my blog. I hope you don't mind. The tips you gave here are valuable and I wanted to share it with more people. Thanks for showing us a little bit more about how you study, some of these methods I've never seen before, and it's always so good to see how other people are doing it so we can figure out the best way to study. I'm learning a lot from you.
@@possessedloneliness1253 These specifcaly are sketchbooks from Moleskine. In majority, they are used by ilustrators, designers, architectures. I think there are other companies besides Molestike, as Cicero (www.ciceropapelaria.com.br), from Brazil, much more cheaper.
I highly recommend flow notes during class as they are fast to make and help you make connections in the content using keywords making it easier to remember although you might want to write them out differently later as they can get messy
unpopular note taking methods: 1: Split page method > active recall / exam prep > name of topic / question on the left column + answer or notes on the right column 2: Q/E/C method > Question, Evidence and Conclusion > clear obvious links that connects topic and conclusion > organize Infos + creates valuable study material 3: Morse code method > draw a dot next to main ideas > draw a dash next to explanations > processing stage = paraphrase dotted ideas 4: flow notes > Incorporate large amounts of infos > throw facts with no order, no clear structure, while connecting them > hybrid system to comment on textbooks 5: Sentence method > one line per paragraph > every sentence has equal values
I love how I’m watching note taking methods and I’m on my bed doing nothing during quarantine 🤣

Thank you so much for this! I’m studying for an exam, so I will try this technique out! 🙏🏾
How come nobody is talking about how nice her handwriting is and how nice her notes look😳
this is the best study/note taking video on youtube. The QEC method seems great for students who understand concepts broken all the way down with structure.
am I the only one curious about what book she uses to write her notes in? yes? okay 😔
I love Notion! Started usin it because of your videos, I started with the free version and it is great and as soon as you start understanding and adding things it makes a lot of sense to pay the full version to add unlimited pages
Thank you so much for uploading this!! I consider myself to be a pretty good note-taker, but there’s always room for improvement 💗
So I happen to follow this steps before finding the video in my recommendation and I am smiling ear to ear for the entire video knowing I have evolved a lot with my note taking over the years
it's funny how i have used every methods mentioned in this video ❤ i recommend flow notes and split page method the most ❤🙏
Love the column method
i've used something like flow notes ever since i can remember, its the best !
School starts tomorrow and I haven’t been in class in almost two years (COVID). I needed this
The split page method helped me alot ❤️
Love how professional u are, have a great year!
I love your pothos plant!
Online school starts again on Monday, this has been so helpful
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR LETTING US KNOW THAT WE STUDENTS CAN HAVE UNLIMITED STORAGE FOR NOTION 🖤🖤 bless you
Notion at the end was a nice surprise. Best note-taking software !
Never thought my type of taking notes would have a name "flow notes" 😂😂😂
I have to praise your English. I am a non-native English speaker and learned SO MANY new words this one video…
I use the flow notes method and I didn't even know it existed. I just like to use arrows x'd
i have been using the FLOW CHART METHOD for almost a year and YES IT IS SUPER HELPFUL
1)- Have good handwriting
I was supposed to watch this for school, and it was actually more interesting than I thought it would be, especially the morse code method.
2:16 She holds the pen in a way that doesn't seem conventional at all.
Álex SanzCh ahah I legit grabbed a pen cause I was like....wait how is she holding it that way??? 😂
I write in the same way lol
Calling it the bud hold because it looks like a rosebud.
if you're tying to be funny it isn't
I just hold the pen in the same way. I've felt represented when I was watching lol Everybody demonstrates the same surprise when look at me writing!
It’s so satisfying to see this beautiful writing
Does anyone have a link to where i can buy this notebook?
us.moleskine.com/en/
@@argeancomics3291 what are these note books called?
@@possessedloneliness1253 These specifcaly are sketchbooks from Moleskine. In majority, they are used by ilustrators, designers, architectures. But the company have anbothers categories, as day schedule, notebooks and so on. I think there are other companies besides Molestike, as Cicero (www.ciceropapelaria.com.br), from Brazil, much more cheaper.
There are other alternatives if you are looking for notebook that has grid papers such as Leuchtturm1917, Kokuya & Campus
Thankyou!
Love your large notebook, your simplicity and productivity looks lovely
aAAAA, você fala português
achei o comentário em português que eu procurava kakakakaka
I highly recommend flow notes during class as they are fast to make and help you make connections in the content using keywords making it easier to remember although you might want to write them out differently later as they can get messy
You hold your pen in an interesting way
unpopular note taking methods:
1: Split page method
> active recall / exam prep
> name of topic / question on the left column + answer or notes on the right column
2: Q/E/C method
> Question, Evidence and Conclusion
> clear obvious links that connects topic and conclusion
> organize Infos + creates valuable study material
3: Morse code method
> draw a dot next to main ideas
> draw a dash next to explanations
> processing stage = paraphrase dotted ideas
4: flow notes
> Incorporate large amounts of infos
> throw facts with no order, no clear structure, while connecting them
> hybrid system to comment on textbooks
5: Sentence method
> one line per paragraph
> every sentence has equal values
Oh my goodness! You hold a pen/pencil the same way I do! I thought I was the only one!
I finally found someone!
Me too!
@@niccib Me too.
