    Hey. I recently found your channel and I love your work with beetles. Ever since I was a kid and I played that one Japanese arcade game (Mushiking I think), I enjoyed seeing these mechs of nature. I was wondering, what makes it the king of beetles (for some reason people keep referring it to the king) even when it didn't have horns?

    • @BeetlesAsPets
      @BeetlesAsPets  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nothing in particular, probably because the biggest specimen look really massive, even compared to hercules which are much longer because of their horns. Species goliathus regius also have similar term in their Latin name regius- royal. This could be another reason for this.

    I know that there are different types. I live in the USA and am raising some larvae and they are slowing growth rate at only mid 30 gram size from initial weight of about 7 grams in late July 2020 until now mid January 2021. What’s a larval size that is likely to pupate? Some people have even up to 100 gram larvae but I assume those are the largest subspecies.
    I don’t know the subspecies I have or if there are more than one or even pure hobby sourced subspecies in the USA.
    Plus, I love you channel and should you have time maybe you could overdub any in English. I don’t think all are in English but I may have missed them.

    You ever tried feeding Goliath larvae other inverts? I’ve seen them go for it and drag Dubai’s or hornworms down the burrows, whenever I can find some larvae it’s definitely something to experiment with. Where do you purchase your Goliaths from by any chance or will you eventually have some larvae?

    • @BeetlesAsPets
      @BeetlesAsPets  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do not normally feed their larvae with inverts, as the larvae do not always eat them. I think this is the matter of picking the right invert :) The larvae are available from time to time on the internet on European market.

    Really cool beetles, love their colors. But I had a question about one of the comments you made in your video, I'm guessing you said it as a joke but you might have been serious. You had said the male and the female won't be mating because they're possibly family. Humans are the only species that doesn't mate with genetic family members. (Specified "genetic" because many US states have different laws about "marrying" relatives. Some allow 2nd cousins to marry without any genetic testing. Others allow 1st cousins if their genetic test results show they are compatible.
    So, just humans avoid inbreeding. But, thanks to modern science, cousins can test themselves to see if they can keep it in the family without producing offspring with severe genetic mutations(smh😵)

    • @BeetlesAsPets
      @BeetlesAsPets  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course they can mate. What I meant is that I will not be pairing beetles from the same offspring, because in goliathus fertility decreases drastically because of inbreeding. After 2-3 "inbreedings" you may get only about 10-20 percent of a normal number of fertile eggs. In my case I used the unrelated male to pair with that female.

    • @staticx720
      @staticx720 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Beetles As Pets That makes perfect sense.. I used to breed ball pythons and I would specifically select say, the mothers son to breed with its mother a year or 2 later in order to strengthen a recessive trait... but even with reptiles/pythons... further down the chain of inbreeding (so 6th or 7th inbreed clutch of eggs), eggs can begin developing various issues that kill the embryos.
      But the most common issue from over-inbreeding with ball pythons is offspring will have permanent neurological disorders... the commonly seen disorder is a frequent head wobble side to side like it's unable to balance itself..
      I didn't breed long enough to ever hatch pythons with this condition. But you will see it amongst professional breeders...
      FYI: the Spider ball python almost always has this problem at varying levels.
      But that's wild inbreeding also presents itself within the insect world.
      I was just reading an article from "top scientist" who researched case studies from the early 1900s to determine if animals do commonly practice inbreeding. And to see if it has any negative impact on that particular species.
      They claim over 75% of the animal kingdom commonly inbreed and there is NO genetic mutations from this practice.
      Only happens with humans... SMH
