  • This video goes into great detail about the entire creation process of a very simple, angular vase. From thrown, to trimmed, glazed and reduction fired to 1290ºc. Making pottery is a long process, with dozens of little steps along the way. My hope is that this video sheds some light on this process but if you do have any further questions, please do ask! And thanks, as always, for taking the time to watch!

    HOW TO REDUCTION FIRE: • Loading and Reduction ...
    Wadding recipe: 50% China clay and 50% coarse alumina hydrate, mixed slowly with water until it has a clay like consistency, then wedged and stored in an airtight container.

    I don't know if you'll see this, but I started my first-ever pottery class a month ago - and thanks to your videos, I've learned so much about throwing pots on the wheel even if it's only been a few weeks! I'm definitely nowhere near perfect yet. Still, I owe a lot of my progress to your videos, they're always so informative and I love seeing videos like these from you where you try new things, it helps me realize that the learning process never stops, and it's really encouraging for me as a beginner, so thank you so much for uploading and sharing your accumulated knowledge with all of us! :)

    I'm 17 year's old, and I really would love to start working with ceramics. I'm going to be applying to art school so I can pursue this passion, but I unfortunately don't have the budget to start yet. Your videos are an amazing help and inspiration. I'm learning so much about pottery even though i can't actually work on my skills yet. Thank you so much for making the content you do!

    Like many others here, I started a pottery course a few weeks ago and in the run up to starting, I binge-watched a huge number of your videos. It has given me such an enormous head start and it is almost like I've already done a course because I've not had to dwell on the basics. So if nothing else, you've saved me the cost of a beginners course. It has been so nice to come back and revisit the videos now that I've had some time at the wheel; it means that each week I can go back and adjust how I'm throwing. My teacher is fine but has 13 other students to look after, so I can honestly say that I've learnt a million times more from these videos. Without wanting to sound arrogant, all my colleagues on the course keep saying that I must be having secret lessons! Every time they say this, I just tell them to watch your videos. I am enormously grateful.

    3:00 I mean, it's not like the wobble will be noticeable anyway. The only people who would put a pot or a vase on a spinning wheel after it is finished only exist in textbooks of physics exercises

    Thank you! Why do you always put some already glassed pieces to burn again in the gas oven?

  • @shellylipman5465
    @shellylipman5465 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you do a reduction fire, you said a more filled kiln fires better, the kiln runs out of O2 and goes for the air pockets in the items being fired. Is that what causes the 12% shrinkage? Does the creation of more space create more oxygen? Made it to the end!

    Hi

  • @hardwareful
    @hardwareful ปีที่แล้ว

    Florian, I've been wondering whether you couldn't modify an electric kiln with a supplemental, lower-power burner. This would allow controlling the temperature electrically while still having the opportunity to modify the atmosphere.
    This might eventually help you keep going during gas shortages, and would allow you to achieve the desired results from a LNG tank or bottles.
    As always, I enjoyed and appreciated your video!

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  ปีที่แล้ว

      They do this in Japan! Electric kilns with a hole in the base for a burner, Ken Matsuzaki fired a few times like that when I was there for my apprenticeship. I guess it's generally avoided because it causes the elements to wear out way faster but it makes gas firing easier in some situations. Thanks so much for watching!
