Can a film be better than its source material? American Psycho is a black comedy slasher film directed by Mary Harron. Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Brett Easton Ellis, the film is considered to be a postmodern masterpiece. But when a film is that good, can it eclipse the novel? Today I explore if American Psycho is Better Than The Book.

"Kino... he was into that whole Sopranos thing"
"What 'whole Sopranos thing'?"
"Well, for one thing, I think he was probably a closet stugots who ate a lot of gabagool. That whole Sopranos thing."
I liked it
This comment made me literally lol at 4:30 in the morning
Criminality under rated comment
Now let’s see Paul Allen’s book and movie comparison.
Paul Owen dies a HORRIBLE death described in graphic detail in the novel.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 how does he die? Does he get his nipples smeared all over some fine leather seats?
@@boblazar316 something about purple slime coming out of the axe wound. It's basically the same as the movie but waaaaaaay more graphic. There are some major cannibal depictions of eating hookers and using car battery to cook ones nipples alive
Oh my god, it even has a Skillshare ad
True story: back in 2003, I was watching American Psycho with my then-girlfriend and I said to her, "You know, Christian Bale would make a great Batman. He's handsome, well built, looks good in a suit, and has the psycho aspect down pat." A year or so later, she clipped out a small article in the newspaper about how WB was producing a new Batman movie and they hired Christian Bale to play Bruce Wayne/Batman. I totally called it. Never forgot that.
Batman isn’t a psycho
Glad to see you doing other videos kino, there’s no stigmata these days

I consider The Talented Mr. Ripley a psychological thriller & if you reviewed that I would be tickled lol
When Phillip Seymour Hoffman confronts Matt Damon the names escape me but PSH is an uber antagonizer @ the piano 🎹 LOL I think that is my favorite PSH scene as much as I love Boogie Nights!
And Boogie a.k.a Vladimir Milivojevich lol I think of Boogie as a director of photography so forgive my randomness. I prob should have mentioned ' speaking of boogie 🎸 lol
Lmao
Ohhh I don’t remember this fuckin episode of the sopranos. Stay in your lane fam.
KIDDING. I LOVE THIS.
No can do I got an 8:30 rez at Dorsia
The book also paints his apathy and disassociation better, if anyone hasn't read it just skip to the chapter "End of the 1980s". It further asserts that he's torn between rebellion through murder and a genuine desire for intimacy and purpose with Jean
One of my favorite scenes in the movie is the breakup scene. Patrick confesses his need to kill on a "massive scale" to his fiance. When he does this he covers his face and he immediately after abruptly looks at her and says they need to talk.. It goes a long way in advocating that he didn't actually say this and is just imagining it.
That's why I prefer the movie - there is so much ambiguity insofar as what has happened, what hasn't, when he broke with reality or if ever even did.
My favorite sequence:
PI: “Where did he hang out?”
Patrick: “Eau Bar… Nells….. the New York Yacht Club….”
PI: “He had a yacht?”
Patrick: “No, he just hung out there.”
😊😎😑.. let's see Paul Allen's card.
Bret Easton Ellis's early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when The Rules of Attraction came out in '87,I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole book has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consimante professionalism that really gives the words a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Ellis has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
This comment is under-appreciated
I can't believe that Bryce prefers Evert Coetzee's comment to mine..
Genius, love it!
It's got to be a lot of fun being an intellectual! And an actor 😆
im still thinking wtf he was going through when he wrote lunar park.
Kino is showing the makings of a varsity videotape reviewer
Borko always said Kino is nothin more than a glorified commenter. Simple, we decapitate and view whatever clips borko uploads.
I also like the extended explanations of food and clothes from the book. They really highlight Patricks obsession with status and how he not only immediately looks for what people are wearing or eating, but he seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of brands. One of my favorite scenes from the book is when he asks Carruthers what he and his client ate at a dinner and Carruthers has some very basic explanation that totally perplexes Bateman. I'm really condensing it, but the highlight for me was something like, "We had shrimp and cheesecake." "How was the shrimp prepared?" "Uh... broiled" "What is.. broiled..?"
Some of the descriptions of the killings in the novel where some of those worst, most vivid and grossest things ive ever read.. so good, especially the thing with the rat, and the one of the car battery
i have two words: palm springs
i had read the book at least 6 times before the movie came out and i was blown away by bale's performance. i was kind of disappointed they left out the palm springs ark and the 6-ways phone call (one of the funniest scene in the book.), but i liked how some of the scenes that didnt make it into the movie were portrayed in patrick's hidden doodles XD
In the book, he actually goes to the video store and has a panic attack because he desperately wants to see the type of shoes that the cashier is wearing. He calms down after he sees that she’s just wearing some old sneakers.

Very Allegorical Kino. In all seriousness this was a good ass video
"We be..uhh..jamming" caught me off guard so bad
The thing about Patrick Bateman is that he’s a saint compared to the novel Patrick Bateman.
In the novel (this is a minor spoile), he kills a kid at a zoo sneakily, then pretends to be a doctor trying to “save” the kid.
The reason? He wanted to see if it would affect him or satisfy him in some way. It doesn’t, because he thinks it’s worthless because there’s no history to a child. It’s literally not evil enough for him.
Also towards the end of the novel, he sees a smudge on Timothy Price’s head but thinks he’s hallucinating. There’s a theory that Pryce might’ve converted to Catholicism, as it was just after Ash Wednesday.
Kino don’t miss. Started watching with the sopranos logs now I’m excited for BB the wire and more!
Very nice, impressive. Let's see Borkos American psycho upload.

I remember watching this movie for the first time so I could prepare for this long writing exam my high school was giving. The teachers told us to watch movies based on books so we could have something to write about for a broad question that we did not know until we took the exam. I ended up writing about The Kite Runner since the question went something like "Can you name a time a character in a book learned an important lesson?"
American Psycho did not fit that question at all.
Another movie I watched to prepare for the exam was Brokeback Mountain. Can you do a video comparing the book and movie?
Excellent analysis Mr. Kino, very allegorical.
Very observant. The sacred and the propane.
I read both the book and saw the movie at least 5 times. I am so happy you decided to review it. You are becoming my favourite TH-cam channel :)
Wow, thank you!
Ok how's this for a coincidence. I Followed the entire sopranos log series on this channel and loved it! And last night for some weird reason i was googling the differences between American Psycho move and the book so you can imagine my surprise waking up this morning and finding a freaking Kino video on that exact subject lmao!
It's a bigger coincidence than Vito being spotted by his nemesis in the parking lot.
It’s always weird when that happens
Your channel is so good bro, I love how in depth you get with these analysis. Definitely a reputable source for media summaries or whatever you wanna call it.
haven't read the book in years but a lot of the more violent passages were legimately difficult to get through, the completely emotionless descriptions of pure sadism turned my stomach, on the other hand parts like the talking cheerio on the patty winters show were as funny as anything in the film. id say both are great in their own way, if anything the book just has stiffer competition given how amazing some of the novels ive read are, it can't quite match up to them whereas the movie is easily one of my favorites
The fact that you're lulled into almost boredom and detachment with the long, endless passages of consumerism and daily minutiae makes the sudden appearance of a page or three of mindless, unspeakable sexual violence all the more jarring. They were really tough to read, and you were almost relieved when it went back to describing a state of the art stereo system or appetizer...
Regarding the torture and murder scenes 'going on too long' in the book, I always thought that was the point. As horrendous as the actions are, the way they're written in the same plodding, dry way as his descriptions of foods, clothes, Genesis albums et al, suggesting Bateman is entirely bored with it all, that the victims are just another commodity and another excess in his life, ultimately unfulfilling. I know the film couldn't have shown everything in book, but I always thought it was a little too sanitised when it came to the murders, which lessened it's impact a little. But it's been a long time since I read the book, maybe I'd feel differently now.
Very good point. I think I read that in a review/interview in somewhere, that the author has Bateman take the same bored/disdainful approach to the murders that he takes with consumeristic trends.
Bingo
The part in novel where he wrote a poem for his date and made her read it is hilarious . I wish it was in the movie , it shows Bateman side that needs to fuck with society in a juvenile way
Although he appeared briefly, Kimball played by Willem Dafoe was really unsettling in the best way.
Christian bale the ultimate troll🤣 3:49
Hey Kino, you should cover Boardwalk Empire next! makes sense for your channel (especially after The Sopranos).
The book had me wincing, grossing out laughing out loud at parts. It’s one of my favorite
Great video! Glad you’re expanding more past the sopranos content.
If you’re thinking of making film vs book into a series I’d be interested in you making a video about the novel Red Dragon vs the 2 film versions, Manhunter and Red Dragon (and maybe the third season of Hannibal)
Let’s see Paul Allen’s ‘Pure Kino’ analysis
A clockwork orange would be really cool
Extremely spot-on analysis - very glad the movie was so good I decided to read the book too. I think your critique of the book going on too long with the murder/torture is apt, but i think it was useful and didn't have as much issue with it as you did. Not that there's anything bad about it, just that the scene with the college girlfriend was more significant to me than most of the other scenes in the movie as a comparison.
As for a suggestion for another video, maybe you could do Trainspotting?
This was a good introduction video transitioning into another kind of content
loving the return to one-off videos
The sigma memes of this movie are funnier than the movie itself.
It tells a lot about our society where we view Bateman with envy rather than disgust.
The sigma memes are meant to be ironic, though. But the original hustler/grindset culture the memes are based on weren't. It speaks volumes on societal decay.
I actually went to university with a guy that basically idolised and worshipped the film portrayal of Patrick Bateman. That was weird to me even back then, a decade ago.
@@hatman3636 bro there are articles still written about what kind of clothes Bateman would want now or the kind of home he will like,he is a style icon since the movie released
@@mohinish2273 where do you think he would be now?
@@quattrobajeena135 he is such a loser, probably shorting GameStop now
I've seen a similar thing with the movie Nightcrawler...judging by comments I've seen on it, people genuinely view the main character (who is also very much a Bateman-esque psychopath) with admiration.
I thought the movie was unusual and thus entertaining. Bale is not one of my favorite actors, but he seemed to fit this role.
It was worth seeing, but I'd never do so again.
You’re just going to surprise me with a video on my favorite film of all time out of the blue? Wow, okay. And thank you.
Can u do Kiss The Girls and Silence of the Lambs next?
Great video! I really enjoyed hearing any your perspective through the differences between the two mediums. As someone who has only seen the movie, I felt that Patrick's struggle to be on the same level of status and popularity as his peers was very apparent and clearly conveyed through Bale's performance and the cinematic mise-en-scène. His over-compensatory rage was also an indicator of his eager need to come out on top due to repeated incidents of failure.
Some of my absolute favorite reads are Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" and basically any of S. Craig Zahler's novels, particularly "A Congregation of Jackals'' and "Wraiths Of the Broken Land," and "Mean Business On North Ganson Street." ALL of these stories describe some absolutely HORRIFIC and realistic acts of violence like you've never heard/seen before (outside of very niche or fetish stuff). Hanging men by their ankles with barbed wire and driving hit iron rods up their ass, jamming a gun barrel thru someone's eye socket so their brain-pan makes an effective silencer, a crippled man that just shot off his bottom jaw and nose in a botched suicide attempt having his colostomy bag shoved in the remainder of his mouth and it's contents being squeezed down his throat, etc. Yeah, gruesome stuff but it's at least semi-justified.
All that being said, the only time I've ever had to actually put a book down because of the depravity I was reading was while reading the sex scenes in "American Psycho."
I won't get into details, and some people may think the other novels I listed are even worse than American Psycho but... The graphic descriptions written by Ellis, are raunchy enough, but are made pretty damn disturbing with the narration by Bateman. Bateman revealing the reasons he basically humiliates these women is too real... Something you can really imagine going thru some maniac's head!!
American Psycho is also in my top 5 favorite novels but that first read was jarring AF having only seen the movie before and not knowing ANYTHING about the novel
I read it in my early teens and blocked half that shit out, lmao.
@@hatman3636 for real! And Bateman does and describes some pretty horrific stuff regarding his murders. Those sex scenes tho... It's when he's not killing or torturing his partner(s) that it gets uncomfortably greasy!
@Seacock Nanny haha I'm actually very social, weird I know! Grew up a Horror fan from a very young age tho and for books I live strong character development... Something all these books dive deeper into than 90% of other novels
No Kino, you're confused - Borko is at Tunnel signing Glasnost with Milosevic.
You think all TH-camr's are dumb dont you?
The book is awesome. I love toward the end when a cab driver recognized Pat Bateman and gave him a little payback.
That’s awesome I read the book not too long ago and to see a review from you is great
Nice analysis, I like the film but love the novel. I read it first back in the nineties whilst studying psychology, it was a nice break from statistical analysis.
Sopranos content extravaganza.... Into a American psycho video? You just earned my subscription.
PS: Novel to Film comparison video suggestions:
1. Elmore Leonard: Rum Punch aka: Jackie Brown
2. Cormac McCarthy: No Country For Old Men
3. JRR Tolkien: The Hobby and/or Lord of the Rings trilogy
4. Upton Sinclair: Oil aka: There Will Be Blood
The best movie to analyze in this way is Shawshank Redemption.
It's a thousand times better than Kings short story.
Can you do a video on Hannibal Lecter? love Silence of the Lambs and the others. Also, who won the members only contest??
This is one of my favorite movies! The dialogue and delivery is what makes American psycho so unique to me. Christian Bale really delivered and so did the set designs. Such as Dorsia’s and the font print on famous business card. Both completely fictional yet are almost their own characters in the movie. I do believe this is a rare time that the movie is on par with the book but it’s because of the flawless execution of production and the actors involved.
Interesting, great movie and Bale's as eccentric as ever here
Patrick Bateman reminds me of California governor Gavin Newsom!
Loving the mix up in content. I think you should defo do more general gangster movie analysis aswell!!!!!
An EXCELLENT choice to follow up all the Sopranos content!
Another video suggestion could be Eyes Wide Shut. It came out the same year as The Sopranos but also the film is psychological like American Psycho.
Getting to see Bryce's dance is what gives the movie the edge for me.
Something doesn't sit right with how Harrion directed it.
In the novel there's a part where Patrick and the gang run into a group of girls that are there complete counterparts. They talk extensively about the rules or wearing fur and gossip about model's. The same way Patrick and friends gossip about suits and executives.
Bret's book was pretty egalitarian in calling everyone greedy and heartless. Harrion creates a world where women are suddenly the only people who can see thru everything.
Great Stuff!
You should do an analysis of No Country For Old Men Kino. I'm excited to see where your channel goes
Thank you! No Country will be next in this series!
It is crazy that I watched all of the Soprano Logs, and then a few days later, I decide to look up videos analyzing American Psycho XC
Thanks for sharing filmography details. There is a film directed by Miranda July named Kajilluonaire and I wonder if you had any interest in covering that one. Richard Jenkins describing the big one (earthquake) is the best thing ever 😆
0:44 this example is actually wrong because what they did was stretch it out rather than cut down the book is shorter than Lord of the Rings books
Great video!!! Please do more
It is kinda funny that Steinem protested the book, as I saw an interview with the writer where he said it was in large part a criticism of what society thinks a man should be

When I saw the title American Psycho, I expected video about Paulie Gualtieri!
It's interesting to hear that Leo was considered for the part, but I honestly can't see anyone else but Bale portraying Bateman.

Great video! I think it’s a great idea to do something different after all The Sopranos. Good work!
I love American Psycho. I haven't ever read the Book. but I find it interesting how Bateman focuses on the most seemingly insignificant of Details.
like the Business Card Scene. he knew exactly how the Cards were different and he judged his as inferior.
it seems as though Bateman really wants to distinguish himself among his Peers but they don't know him from anybody else in a suit and as a result it's hard for The Audience to know him
the way the Movie ends it's hard to tell if anything really happened at all or if Bateman is just stuck in his own Fantasy Land.

It’s definitely darker and more bizarre/upsetting.

You should do rules of attraction next
I imagine watching the movie, then reading the book is a great idea. In the movie, you see everything in an objective sense. However, after seeing everything in an objective light, when you read the book, you see how everything effects him.
For example:
In the movie, you see how he tries to fit in with his “friends”
Where as in the book, you see how he views the sheer worthlessness of his friends, and that he only needs them to fit in.
“Try getting a reservation at vesuvio now”
Fight Club and American Psycho are the only movies I know to surpass the book it's based on.
