Mint Flashbar 2 Review and Comparison for SX-70

  • My name is Li and I take photo for fun.
Recently I've taken a liking to shooting on the vintage Polaroid SX-70 cameras, but using disposable flashes for indoor photos didn't sit well with me (it's unsustainable and expensive).
So as anyone in my situation would, I picked up a Mint Flashbar 2 and played around with it for a bit. However, my feelings about the Mint Flashbar 2 are quite reserved: I understand the appeal of the portability but the light quality does not live up to the hype. The brightness of the Mint Flashbar 2 falls short of the vintage flashes by 1.3 to 2 stops of light and there is a blue color cast to the light as well. For the price that I paid, I would have expected much better. However, if you're comfortable living with these compromises, the Mint Flashbar 2 is a good, portable flash to have in a pinch.
I have, on the otherhand, managed to find that there is a plethora of other electronic flashes, most of which were made in the 1970s and 1980s, which produce much better light than the Mint Flashbar II at the cost of portability; these old school flashes are indeed quite bulky. That is a trade off I'm more than willing to make, though. Some examples of these vintage electronic flashes are below.
    Google search links:
Nissin SX-70 Flash (the one I use)
    bit.ly/3Apn4kN
Polatronic 2350 (recommended often on forums)
    bit.ly/3AidKii
ITT Magic Flash (common on ebay, but with mix reviews about durability)
    bit.ly/3OZLzbZ
There are many more vintage electronic flashes out there and most of them are powered by standard AA batteries. When you're searching around though, make sure to do you're doing your research on which type of connectors are used on the specific flash you're looking for, as not all of the PCB connections are compatible with the old SX-70s (some of these flashes are designed specifically for the Polaroid Sonar cameras).
Hopefully some of you out there can make use of this information and find a SX-70 flash that suits your needs. Happy shooting!

Wow man, such high quality videos.
Ngl I think the mint bars help shape and light skin tones better

That might be true. I found that the Nissin tends to have a more magenta tint compared to the magnesium cartridges and the Mint FlashBar.

@@coffeeandspice yeah, I have an old school flash as well. It depends on the setting how it’ll react

Wouldn’t turning the exposure comp dial only lengthen the shutter speed? When shooting flash, shutter speed only affects the strength of ambient light and shouldn’t increase the amount of exposure gained from the flash.

      I think it depends.
From my experience, when I plug a flash into the camera, the camera defaults to 1/40s shutter and adjusts the aperture based on how far the focal point is. If my subject is far away and the camera maxes out at f/8, then turning up the dial would only change shutter speed and doesn't do much for the flash. In any other case, the camera adjusts the aperture between f/32 and f/8, which does affect flash exposure, before it changes the shutter speed.
In the comparison discussed in the video, the Mint FlashBar II would just have a shorter max effective distance, even if you crank the dial on the camera.
I'm sure that's not the case for all versions of the sx-70, especially the Alpha-7, but at least for the earlier copies, I've found that that's the case.
      Hope that helps?

The sx70 changes the aperture for using the flash, it closes it or opens it depending on focus settings and the exposure dial when using the flash

    你好,想请问sx70怎么连接使用nissin闪光灯?

    • @coffeeandspice
      @coffeeandspice  ปีที่แล้ว

      nissin闪光分两部分。下面的一部分是装电池的;这一部分是用一个夹子夹在相机的下面。另外一部分是闪光;这一部分是有插头的,连接在相机的上面,跟MintFlashbar一样。上下两部分是有电线连接的。
