Really moving and expressive. Instead of shredding, Jeff Berlin puts his incredible facility to use creating rich, emotional, gorgeous music. It's not about how many notes you can play but rather playing them with guts, feeling and conviction. Thanks, man.

As I've said for years: Jeff Berlin is worth the price of admission alone. I remember seeing him at The Last Chance in Poughkeepsie playing with Holdsworth and his bass solo was supreme!

Back MANY years ago, When i was playing bass, people would ask me "Who the hell is this Jeff Berlin"? I guess it was because i was always talking about him and how much i admired him. i had a good reason to admire this guy i think.

Thank you for bringing this up. Where do people get this the idea that chords are not meant for bass? It doesn't make sense to me. I mean, pianists used chords in bass parts all the time, and no one cares about that.

When Jeff came to Venezuela, he did a beautiful version of our national anthem and some influential people went nuts- in a bad way. Too bad Venezuelan press and politics were musically challenged to appreciate it, and Jeff never played it again. I just hope someone taped it so I can hear his version.

  • @Marlowann

What are you talking about? There is an incredible groove in Jeff Berlin's playing here. Just because there isn't a definite and perfect tempo to it doesn't mean it can't flow... If that were true, plenty Classical music would be down the toilet by now.
He's playing the bass freely, chordally, and melodically, and it's beautiful.
If by "groove" you mean "playing a bassline in a band setting in time with the right feel," and if that's all you think a bassist should do, then I'm sorry.

It's actually a Dean bass guitar. Quite a surprise, seeing as how dean isn't exactly known as 'high dollar' instrument. Maybe it's just me, but dean kind of has the stigma about it. I always think of it as a 'beginner bass'. But Jeff really likes it - and I have grown to like it as well. There's way too many players that have that 'slap' tone. It's refreshing to hear a bass like this.

I dont mind the string noise at all. Classical guitarist have string noise and its part of the expression in his playing. Id get rid of the reverb though he does not need it. That beautiful tone is incredible and this is not just shredding but something he painstakingly worked out. At times it sounds like 2 or 3 instruments playing and he is not even tapping or slapping. Berlin is an original and one of the greatest bassist in the world. We only get to see him at Namm shows or doing clinics on utube these days. I wish he was gigging more.

Most people don't lift up their fingers when they are playing, they either mute the strings with their right hand or the use this nifty little device called a noise gate that blocks out lower volume noise, seeing him play like this proves that he has very nice control over the guitar because he isn't using a noise gate, it requires more skill to play like that. And if you really feel like badmouthing someone then why don't you play it better, then ill listen...

@GreenbergBass I didn't realize that. I guess I see what you mean because I know this great jazz guitarist who plays some excelling fusion/jazz and his tone is always too high on the treble end. He never uses the neck pickup.
I like when players mix it up by switching pickups here and there for effect. It makes a difference. I have played guitar 25+ years and have always had an affinity for bass. I just picked up a fretless SX short scale, having a blast learning and playing

@connorbassplayer - Because Leo Fender called it that. Doesn't make it right. He also called the Strat's vibrato bridge a tremolo. The electric bass isn't just a low guitar. It's descended from the double bass at least as much as it is from the electric guitar.

  • @strongbadian4747
