After spending 3 weeks in hospital a friend went to my house to check things and told me my maidenhair had died. I told her to cut the whole plant back to 1 cm then burn the tips. Yes I said “burn”. I had to keep telling her I was serious. After about 6 weeks I was pleased to send her a photo of a beautiful bushy healthy plant. This same plant is now 40 years old and every couple of years if it gets tatty I give it the same treatment and it comes back more beautiful than before. I have only read this tip once before and am so glad I did. You will notice trees do the same thing after being in a bushfire.

Does this burning help start new growth? I cut my dead one down to 1cm and have had it like that for a week now. Should I consider burning🤔

@@claramsw Yes, I’ve been giving my maidenhair this treatment for a number of years. Be patient, it will take a few weeks before you start seeing new growth.

Hello again Clara. I just reread your question again and realised you said your maidenhair was dead. If so, this method won’t bring it back to life. However I trusted my ferns to someone to take care of whilst I was away for a few weeks and they forgot to water them. The ferns were in a very sad state and looked almost dead. I gave them the burn treatment and after struggling to survive they finally made it but it did take a few months to look healthy. As we are coming into the colder months it could take quite awhile for new growth to appear. It’s certainly worth a try. As I mentioned, you will notice trees sending out new growth after a bushfire. It’s a survival thing. Good luck.

@@suespence8381 Hello again Sue, I’m just seeing this. THANKFULLY THANKFULLY today I noticed it has begun to sprout very teeny little sprouts !! The happiest of days. I did end up burning it in the beginning, and I think that helped! I thought it was absolutely a goner. Thank you for your advice :) I didn’t think it would sprout in so little time either

Same thing happened to me with my Oxalis Tricolour. I thought it was dead as a dodo. On the advice of my sister, I took the whole plant and buried it under an inch of compost, and left it in a cool spot out of direct light, watering when ever the soil felt dry. The plant revived and is thriving

Thank you so so much for making this video!! This is exactly what I needed to watch. I’ve had mine for several months now and had it dry up for the first time. So sad, because it’s such a beautiful plant. Followed advice and cut it back down. I have hope because there are several cute little green baby shoots. Fingers crossed that it will make a full recovery!

Great video. I have been doing this but not the burning, for a couple of years now with great success. I give a total haircut each time, only because once I start trimming I get carried away. I relate so much to this video, haha. I am not sure how many times I have gone through this with mine. I've had it for 4 years now and at least once a year I end up losing all of it and having to let it all regrow again. Poor thing. I've had a few others over the years but this is the only one that I have kept and just keep reserecting. It's taken a decade but I finally figured it out, kind of. It only took a couple days for mine to start growing again this time around. I was super happy. She just got too dry for 2 days that I was out of town. I forgot to water her right before I left. Oh well, I think she has forgiven me haha.

Are you letting them dry out between watering? I tried to make sure mine never dried out completely and I kept it somewhere out of direct sun. Too much sun can crisp them up really quickly. It could be to do with humidity as well if the air is quite dry, if you've got a squirt bottle try giving them a spritz of water every now and then. Good luck!
