When I was a kid my MOTU Webstor broke: I overdid the powerpunch waist swivvel and something snapped inisde and it stopped working. But to my young mind it was not "This toy is broken" it was "This character's spine broke."
I think I have covered most of the issues you talked about today. Thumbs and crotches are easy to repair, and a must to learn if you collect Joes. TF's are fun ones to fix as the designs are so over complicated. Nothing lasts for ever. It think toy collectors need to remember that.
One interesting one not mentioned that falls into the deterioration department is (yet another Toybiz instance of using rubber) the Cave troll from the Lord of the Rings line. The entire head/face was rubber so that he could like....express emotions when roaring. It was cool at the time, but now...mine is actually mostly intact but VERY mummified. So cracked. I don't even want to TOUCH it for fear the face would fall off like Jeff Golblums in The Fly. But I've actually seen ones in way worse shape than mine and that faceless face is the stuff of nightmares.
Lol I used to take baths playing with my gi joes and the screw on the back and whatever metal parts eventually rusted… as I remember my dad bought me the 89 Batman figure that did the cape wing span when you squeezed his legs… I was playing with it once and one of his arms popped out.. I assumed it was broken and hid it forever until it was found in the garage.. I was questioned about it and just said I thought I lost it. His arm had gone missing so I had an armless Batman until it just had to be thrown out. Easy fix now as an adult but as a kid.. i wouldn’t have known
Dave over at Toy Polloi has some great videos on how to fix broken thumbs and crotches for GI Joes, as well as lots of MotU, Transformer, and Star Wars figure repairs. Stickiness is something I've had to deal with quite a bit lately - a bunch of small Konami figures I had went sticky, as did most of my Neca Pirates of the Caribbean figures, plus some others. You can wipe them down with lighter fluid, which helps to a degree if it's not too bad. A soak overnight in a strong concentration of dishwashing liquid also helps, but ultimately these are delaying tactics and I ended up binning quite a few figures. On the plus side, this did open up some space for some new stuff...
It's funny that you included the Horde snake. Mine looks like yours if not worse. My Arkham City Riddler broke at the wrist getting him out of the box. Another in the line broke the first time I tried to bend his arm.
My auto morpher MMPR green ranger had a broken leg, he got thrown across the room by lord zed and broke his leg. my mom had to super glue it together so he had a permanent stiff leg.
Somehow, my vintage, well played with GI Joe collection survived without any broken thumbs. However, 2 of my favorites suffered from other injuries. Jet pack Hawk had a broken front of his crotch and Lowlight’s one leg got broken pegs. I made a little crutch out of tooth picks for Low Light to get around with.

Perhaps THE worst breakage incident I've ever had though was the McFarlane Aliens/Predator stuff. I had the entire line including their AVP 2-Pack and the Queen all in storage in a bin....and went through a move. When I opened that bin up, it might as well have been like excivating an archeological digsite. It felt like sifting through leftover bones. A lot of McFarlane was just not made to last...and I even knew it too so was extra careful in packing them in that bin. Didn't matter. The GOOD news is the NECA Aliens/Predator stuff is so much better, so now it doesn't bother me nearly as muc since I've upgraded (though I will confess NECA when first kinda up and coming had some quality control issues too - but they're SO much better with it now). But at the time it looked like I took them through a warzone.
I’m way late to this episode, but one I remember was the 1998 Godzilla, the I think 10” one with tail whip action. The rubber on the take cracked easily, and the piece got lost long ago so it looks like he had a weird skeleton tail. Another more recent was the Indominous Rex skeleton and submarine set from Jurassic World. The skeleton had to be boiled to loosen it up, much like many NECA figures. I was a victim of this one, and on top of that it was a Walmart Black Friday exclusive. Luckily my Walmart got a pallet of them so there were some left I was able to exchange for a new one.
Almost 40 years later, I still remember scaring the crap out of my 4yo cousin with that Fright Zone snake glove on at least 3 family visits, when we were kids. She hated that thing 👍🤣🤣
Spider-Man: The Movie toys, no matter how revolutionary they were in terms of articulation, were cursed to break at the supremely delicate joints. My cousins accustomed to battering their toys around, so all of their Spideys were mutilated by the end of '02. Around '05, I accidentally left my Super Poseable Green Goblin pegged on his glider when I put him back in the toy box, and the ankle snapped clean off when I pulled him back out. Naturally, I was devastated to find out that the joint couldn't be repaired, so I threw him on the ground in a fit of rage; the entire body completely shattered in a spectacular fashion upon impact. Most recently, circa '17, I found a Battle Ravaged GG at a con, new in package. Already owning a mint one, I decided to take him out for display. The simple act of removing the figure out of package caused the neck piece to snap in two.
I had the original RGB Fright Features and I'm fairly certain all of them broke over time, whether it be the feature not resetting correctly or an arm or leg breaking off from overuse. Thankfully the current "Fright Features" Ghostbusters and Stranger Things toys have much simpler mechanics that are less likely to fall apart. Really hoping Hasbro rereleases the aforementioned RGB with some slicker movements that'll last longer.
You spoke of GI Joe, customizing, repairing, and holes on the backs of action figures. Personally I just want screws in the torso shell ALWAYS, the glue and ultrasonic welding approach has proved to be terrible long term regardless of aesthetics. Seen more than a few new toys like new-Mego and other 1/9 scale that needs repairs and mods right out of the box which would be easier with three screws included which is only pennies, maybe a nickel at most ijs.
G1 Transformers were notoriously fragile, some more than others. For instance, the top and bottom half of the Autobot Jazz is connected by this thin spindle of plastic. It was very easy to snap and cut Jazz into 2 pieces.
Castle Grayskull hinges.... And also Infaceables line from Galoob with the rubber faces that would vac-form over the hard 3D face layered beneath them. Aaaaaaaalways ripped or missing faces today.
#Hasbro Has Done It Allraedy in 2009's Revenge Of The Fallen! I Have A #Megatron Tank with Electronic Sounds That Shot 2-Missles, But ONLY His Head Transformed... Beast wars Transmetal Megatron, specifically the Hasbro release is made of extremely brittle brown plastic, and due to how his waist joint is ratcheted he just explodes in half. It's similar to Gold plastic syndrome in the case it was noticed a few years after the figure was released, but unlike gold plastic syndrome he'll stay intact unless you bend the joints in a certain way. You frequently see the parts of him not made with that weird brittle brown plastic in used parts lots and it's probably due to this. The breakages caused by merely handling things the way they're intended to be handled are the worst. Having to heat up joints with a hair dryer to get them working is nothing compared to figures disintegrating even when the joints are perfect. On the subject of the MOTU revelations figures, I keep passing up the chance to get them every time I see them. The designs are really cool but it's like every time I see the few I want in stock It's always when money's tight lmao. Skeletor, skelegod, and faker are the big 3 in that sense, and they seem to occasionally show up from time to time in some places by me. The MOTU origins waves have been nonexistant save for skeletor and he man for the entire last 2 years in my area, more than likely thanks to store employees doing shady business. I'm guessing the reason the revelations figures aren't selling too well is due to the fact that the series they're from, aside from the animation, is kinda sub-par. It acts like it's a sequel to the original series but retcons too many things and borrows from the 2000s reboot's lore while also altering those. If it was it's own thing with a plot leading up to what happened it'd probably have been received a lot better. Also a legit shame they turned skelegod into a red-herring villain in the second part, he had a really cool design and a "skeletor becomes god" plot has genuine potential.
Yeah, Bluestreak broke his windshield and the tires fell apart. They did action figures of Black Hole characters that were cool, but their thumbs broke off. The Transformers old and new, are terrible about breaking or falling off. Gobots did better though they have some accessories that get lost easily. I had better luck with Star Wars toys that didn't break on me.
True story - I think every kid knew A KID that was INFAMOUS for breaking every OTHER kids toys. 🤣One day I found the early 90's Toybiz Juggernaut, first release one, at I think it was like a drugstore when out with my mom. I just begged her for it. Well the Juggernaut had this gimmick where he has a lever on his back they you could push up and down and his arms would move up and down. I just get out of the car and open him up and I see Shawn coming down the street....oh no. NOT him. And he asks if he can see it...."Um yeah, I guess...." and he just starts pushing that back lever faster and faster and faster until the ONLY way I can discribe it is Juggernaut BASICALLY exploded. I had him home for about 3 minutes. 🤣Those old Toybiz figures def. had some quality control issues, but in this case...my friend actually just managed to defeat the Juggernaut.

Yes, gold plastic syndrome. Some brown and light blue plastics also have issues.
