There's an old saying that goes, a man who writes a poem for his woman loves her, but a man who writes 50 poems for his woman loves poems. I suspect it is much the same with waifus and giant paper cutouts.
woah…
I think you summed it up perfectly :o
That's the exact vibe I got here too. Before this video I thought he was just a massive Maizono lover, but after watching it looks like she's just another character in all this, not necessarily the focus.
yo those’re some wise words
a man who creates a giant paper cutous for an anime character loves her, but a man who creates 50 giant paper cutouts for an anime character loves giant paper cutouts
The twist he's never even PLAYED Danganronpa was insane. And the twist he could fund this because his father wrote GREASE was amazing.
The anime is a 1:1 adaptation so I can see why he'd feel it'd be redundant. I've never seen the anime because I played the game. He probably did play DR2 and V3 though.
Also somehow I get the feeling the son turning their investment properties into gigantic art installments is something the father doubtlessly approves of, who is clearly otherwise suffering from Micheal Townley Syndrome judging from the abandoned state of the property.

@@NotAGoodUsername360 bruh Micheal Townley syndrome? I know people like to play medical experts on the internet but inventing a new syndrome is a new one for me.

I still can't believe he's this dedicated to a girl who died in the first chapter of the first game. Literally on screen for like, less than 10 hours.
even less than 5 maybe..
Pretty sure it's within like the 1st couple hours nevermind 10.
And it's crazy cuz the game tries to push you into reaaally liking her and I wasnt having it. She felt fake from the jump, and I was already trying to talk to Kyoko lol
@Star Wolf 128 idk, maybe they missed that. Maybe they are actually into it.
@Star Wolf 128
Not the biggest fan of her, but this is just not true
They leave her actual feelings for Makoto ambiguous in the OG game, but that doesn't mean she was only trying to trick him
Sayaka played the cards she was dealt, not knowing the full scope of the situation (the class trials and everyone dying if the killer got away hadn't been explained to them)
In additional material like Danganronpa IF, Sayaka is shown to care about Makoto when she puts her plans on hold to make sure he's okay
In any other situation, they probably would've been good friends, like in Talent Development Plan or Danganronpa S
Honestly, the fact Tobyn’s dad wrote grease makes SOOOO much sense.
The original broadway production of grease was a satire and parody about the 1950’s and 1950’s tropes. It seems his son is doing something along the same thing.

He is “internetionally” considered Sayaka’s husbando, and I don’t think anyone dares to step up to compete. I can’t think of anyone who can monopoly a waifu in such a way.
This is so crazy that it’s formidable.
There’s also not much competition because no one really cares about this character so the community is happy to let him have her

Johnny Sins 2: Memes are Dreams Boogaloo
I like his parents' reaction, because it's neither dismissive nor delusionally "supportive," it feels very sober with a mix of "our kid's a bit of a nut" and "we're kinda proud of him". That's really nice. Also, as much as I still think this hobby is a bit off, I gotta hand it to Tobyn that he's making an actual craft out of it. I work in advertisement and before the pandemic, on-site presentations with prints on black cardboards were still a thing (and our biggest misery in the office.) I've gotten pretty good with a cutter knife over the years, but it still pales to what Tobyn is pulling off: seamless, perfect straight cuts along the print, no ruler, and on an A3-sized sheet as well. That's real skill. Good on him!!
Thanks for this documentary, Nick!
He's self aware, he's passionate, he recognizes his privilege, he seems kind and he is Grease (!?) royalty? I like him.

Watching the premiere chat completely explode after the revelation that he never played Danganronpa has been so far the funniest experience I've had in youtube. You could never write something like this in fiction.
as someone said, the anime is practically a direct adaptation
I wondered when originally learning about this guy how he could possibly be a gamer if willing to spend so much time not gaming. Now I know the truth
Pretty common IRL nonetheless. I never read A Song of Ice and Fire series before I wrote my fic. Now it had passed 200k words.
@@fixedfunshow Yeah, but the weird thing about being obsessed with Maizono is that she's literally the template character that dies in the first hour of story. For anyone to reach any level of obsession, you could infer that said person has at least some emotional closure developed into that specific character. Maybe he played the post-game of DR1 or V3, and THEN he realized that she was the perfect girl for him or something. But no, he literally just saw her, thought she was cute, and decided to show to the world his relentless infatuation for Sayaka Maizono, that's it. And this is a reminder that sometimes there are no big explanations in life, it just happened. As simple as that.
@@Ardefisty I think he just found her nice, I doubt he even knows much about her or truly cares
His dad being one of the world's most famous playwriters was a crazy plottwist but it explains why he seems to have infinite money and space. Other than "autism" being the first word that I think of when I see this, it's just crazy how rich you must have to be to do stuff like this on this kind of scale
Suddenly I don’t feel so weird anymore… when I was 12 in 2002, I figured out that if you print from Paint on the school computer, it prints a picture on many papers. So I used like 50 pages to print a real size version of Yuki from Fruits Basket. And put it on my wall in my room. I also covered all of my walls, every single little space, in pictures of my favorite mangas. Half my room was dedicated to Arina Tanemura. Every inch that wasn’t furniture was covered. It was mostly cause I didn’t like my wallpaper, haha. But yeah now I don’t feel so abnormal anymore. Phew. (I don’t do that anymore though lmao)
Did you spend a huge amount of money on that or did your school not have a printing limit? At my school you had some free prints and then you had to pay to print more.
@@rachelcookie321 2002 schools aren;t exactly good with PC controls I guess.

"Abnormal" and "eccentric" people are often the most interesting. I've always gravitated toward the folks that others see as being weird, and the sort of social outcasts who were seen as strange simply because their interest were outside the mainstream, and many of those weirdos are still my friends to this day. If more folks did what they were passionate about, and expressed themselves how they wanted without letting others opinions dictate how they live their lives, I think this world would be a far more kind place, and it'd definitely be a hell of alot more fun!
It would be one thing if it was your average two bedroom home or apartment, but it's not. Calling THAT a house is being modest. That is an anime MANSION.

Tobyn, you’re the textbook definition of “be true to yourself.” You’re such an inspiration, an icon, a legend. Keep being you, man.
PRAISE SAYAKA
There's a fine line between eccentricity and insanity, and Tobyn casually uses that line as a jump rope. Truly, "the devil works fast, but Tobyn works faster." (Quotes because it's not my joke - someone @'d Tobyn when the new Hololive members debuted to ask him to do life-size FuwaMoco cutouts, and he responded with a photo of them completed and standing within an hour, prompting that response)
Also his original art is horrifying but super cool. This man is clearly an artist and crafter first, anime fan second, and knowing that makes it all make more sense.
The instant I saw the outside of his house, I knew who this was. I'm into Vtubing community, and this guy has kind of made a name for himself among that fandom for making truly GIGANTIC paper/cardboard cutouts of Vtubers (my first exposure to him was the 30-ft Calliope Mori he set up outside his garage); many of said Vtubers have even acknowledged them, and had pretty much the same reaction everyone has: shock, befuddlement, and then admiration. This really is just this guy's "thing"; man simply likes making paper cutouts. And, strangely specific as it may seem, it obviously takes a lot of work and dedication, and I really admire him for it.

I truly thought it was him from the thumbnail. I mean it could be something he'd do.
Michael Reeves is far more sane than this serial killer in training.
@@thirtythreeeyes8624 Did you even watch the whole video?
@@thirtythreeeyes8624 You obviously aren't familiar with Michael Reeves, the lazy Bond villain
As someone working in print for a few years now, his workflow and process for how he makes these is immensely impressive! At the start I Immediately was thinking "Oh he definitely has a wide-format printer or has a good connection with a local shop." Nope. All done with consumer level materials.
A true artist through and through.
I'm especially impressed that none of that was done with a continuous 'plotter format' printer; I'd assumed (wrongly) that was how he started since my school had to air gap theirs to prevent students from *accidentally* making larger-than-life posters with a few mis-clicks (while browsing) w/ the 'fit to page' default left on. (And using up the pigment/ink)
The fact I know more about the Maizono guy than I know anything about Grease says a lot lol
Just figured he got lucky with crypto or something, but that's some cool hidden lore, nice to see the parents being so supportive
I love that Tobyn wanted you to have the best video possible and allowed you to add the info and video about his dad in. Cause that would make the video more interesting. THAT is the thought process of a content creator. I hope his stuff gets even bigger and he's able to do whatever business he wants to do.
Say what you want, but this man feels more like some kind of passionate artist rather than a deranged anime fan
100% deranged anime fan. No need to normalize madness.
That’s what i think as well. Feel like a very rough exhibition to me. Tidy it up and redesign the space with some story. It can easy rebrand as an art exhibition lol. Pretty cool. It’s just so interesting how he would do things that big and extreme and i want to understand his story or reason behind it. 😂
fr, let the guy cook
He's both.
The line is very thin, even Hayao Miyazaki, perhaps the greatest anime artist of all time got into it because of a waifu initially.
i enjoy taka as the hall decorations, since he’s like an ultimate hall monitor
he is always watching. a l w a y s
22:02 she’s just standing there… menacingly
The gitaroo man music at 10:27 was an amazing pick. Love that song.
The best part is that this guy at least seems self aware about how bizarre this is and seems to be at least partially doing it for the meme
It's funny cuz it's a trivia fact that Sayaka and Leon were the first ever DR characters made, and the crew got tired of them so they decided they got out first. And then here we have a guy that's dedicated his life for Sayaka 😂
It's honestly so cool to see someone doing something that they enjoy without worrying about being weird. Think about how much you could achieve, and how happy you could be if you didn't care about being cringe.
I died when it said "Leon Worshipers shall perish hell"
This guy was unexpectedly so wholesome. I first pinned him as a cringe weeb like most people did but he's a really sweet self-aware guy with loving parents. Honestly amazing and bravo for making this video!!
Wholesome, but still VERY cringe.
@@Guru_1092 the guy said it himself that there’s a market for cringe content and mans is capitalizing on it.
If it was for a character who everyone likes it would be cringe. The fact it’s for an underrated/scapegoat character means it likely isn’t cringe
His dad is a white guy with an Asian wife. Runs in the family...
@@ma.2089 no it's still cringe
This was a much needed deep-dive on Tobyn. I could tell he was satirical from the start, but the commitment to the bit is even more absurd than I thought - I have respect for the man's dedication. Also, his dad's a legend - so big ups to that.
A lot of people were giving him crap before and honestly I think Sonichu and it’s maker kinda ruined a lot of people’s ability to trust in the baseline sanity and goodness of most people. Makes it hard to tell who’s satirical and artistically driven or just nuts.
Honestly, this guy could be an icon in street art if these were put up everywhere in the city, but the problem is, he's known as the only person who does this so he'd be suspected immediately
This is what i see myself doing in 10 years.
Loved how you painted this video in a positive light. This man is just embracing who is, without a care in the world. Incredible.

@@nintendodslite1 yes indeed
he's a kid with rich parents throwing away money to sate his severely autistic tendencies. The only good thing about it is the money is probably going to someone who needs it more.
It's fitting that the characters in Danganronpa are stylized to look like cardboard cutouts ingame, too. That army of Monokumas looked just like it would ingame.
Super impressive. This was a lovely video and the family seems wholesome.
I SAW HIM FROM HIS OMORI VID WHERE HE PUSHED A GIANT MARI STANDEE DOWN THE STAIRS 😭
The goddamn end reveal that Tobyn's dad is one of the writers for Grease is absolutely fucking insane. I feel like I'm in The Twilight Zone.
The twist at the end tho 💀 glad to see their parents are absolutely fine with it
if someone breaks in his house they will have a fucking panic attack
Your music selection is the exact stuff I've e loved since I was a kid, wow how cool!
Dude, this is insane. This man, Tobyn, the son of the person who wrote the musical called Grease, is a huge anime fan. And the reveal that he didn't even play danganronpa... I just felt like a cosmic event just happened.
I love this channel, you make whatever is interesting to you and go all out with it. And such an insane connection with his Dad too! What a timeline we live in
hello nathaniel

We did it, boys! We found Nathaniel B
The Ishimaru’s all across the wall was so funny for some reason😭
Also I wanna steal his Monokuma army
I’ve always been the type to dedicate my room to random things, i literally have a lego batman shrine. but this guy and specifically this video REALLY inspired me to make my Mr Small wall. it’s now my favorite thing ever so
If Yayao Kusama can find fame and respect for filling rooms with polka dot covered things, this guy can do the same with waifus. It's all art at the end of the day. Can't wait to see the YSL collab with maisano on handbags and luggage.
i love this comparison
Yayoi worked her ass off to get where she is and often was mocked or had her ideas stolen from her. Additionally, she broke into the American art world as a woman from a foreign country. She had to learn English and leave her family and comfort behind to accomplish her dreams.
This kid was born with a silver spoon and parents who are supportive (which is good), but are also enabling him to allow his passion to overtake their comfort (bad).
There is a big difference.
@@raspdereWho gives a shit where someone comes from? Isn't the point of art that anybody, no matter your background, can partake in it? Why do we care if the guy is rich? Why does that affect his ability to make art? Why are people so obsessed with every artist having to go through some insane tough and heartbreaking backstory to get to where they are? Why can't some artists just be appreciated even when they were born with a silver spoon?
I love how both of you spelled it differently and missed. Her name is Yayoi Kusama. She is not exactly famous for her mental health, so let's hope this guy's case is better.
@@judit5173 It's a typo. I don't type very well on my phone due to autocorrect! I'm sorry for that and have fixed it.
You guys can’t even hate him, it’s a really impressive art form AND he’s crazy dedicated to it. He puts his appreciation into ACTUALLY doing something, rather than wasting time constantly replaying her part of the game, and I can’t help but want to be his friend
