See Through Walls in Cinema 4D Tutorial

  • Some times you want to be able to see through a ceiling, floor, or wall but still have the wall bounce light back into the scene. In this Cinema 4D tutorial I show how to set this up by using the "front/back" attribute of the Material tag.
    UPDATE
It turns out, that having one side invisible will still allow light to pass through it, SO you need to block the light with a solid. BUT you will still be able to see through the wall and have the "solid" side bounce light.

Thanks so much, dude! I was trying to make an infinity mirror cabinet and couldn't figure out how to make a one way mirror. This did the trick!

I prefer to load black color into the Alpha channel instead of Transparency. You don’t get ghosting effect which makes the viewport cleaner. Also I think it might be a little faster at render time because it’s not calculating refractions and other parameters related to transparency. Cheers!

I was just trying out your tutorial and, because it didn't work for me, rewatched your video. And I now realized that it's not working for you either?
Compare your shadow in the upper left ceiling corner when rendering without the ceiling with the shadow when rendering from the top down with the transparent ceiling. It's identical and doesn't look like the shadow from inside with a solid ceiling. You can even see the edge/corner of the wall being shadowed. I guess the solution would be something with a render tag, but I'm trying to figure that out now.

this is what I also realized so this tutorial is actually non sense but it's still interesting to think about that issue

I'm in the same road here... I want the wall (or ceiling) to be transparent in the render BUT to block the outside light... if you found a solution please do tell... Thanks!

some times you can add ambient/sky light to add some subtle top light back in, but using a real ceiling if your set has a ceiling is more realistic for sure

Does this work with physical sky as well? because it seems to be casting shadows on the plane where I wanted to block the light coming in from a building. I've postioned it that way so the camera fits in, I could make the room bigger to allow the camera to fit but i would like to know what im doing wrong :(
also you should get this channel up annd running again, you've got great content!

how do I get the skylight to go through my ceiling? when I render my project with the ceiling its blocking the light and its causing the scene to be dark.

After comparing the two images, It doesn't seem to work even in your video. There is clear light coming in from the top illuminating the far top left corner. In the visible ceiling case, the light is correctly blocked.

Could you please make a tutorial on how to 3D scan yourself without using any fancy equipment ?
