This is exactly a video I needed today. Thank you, Göran. Getting a step closer to my goal is worth the struggle today. After all, if I don't feel up to more, I can cut the run a bit shorter.
I started couch to 5k in a desperate attempt to get healthy (was 40lbs overweight, a smoker and very sedentary.) Never expected to love it, and I didn't for a long time 😅 What made the biggest difference was when I noticed the effect on my mental health & ADHD. Once I realised how much better I felt - happier, calmer, more focused, more confident, and with a real sense of achievement and pride - I was hooked. If I don't want to go for a run I just remind myself how great I'll feel afterwards, and I tell myself it doesn't need to be a great run, I just need to get out the door! Going for adventures really helps me too, and I'm the sort of person who always wants to be working towards a big, exciting goal - currently training for my first ultra :D
Oh, and I stopped smoking, lost the 40lbs, and am now a very active and healthy person :D I can't go back in time and change my previous unhealthy habits, but I can do all I can to improve my health going forwards 🥰
@@r-pupz7032 That sounds awesome, good on you! I've never been overweight, but I know exactly what you're talking about with regards to mental health. Running has helped me a lot more than my therapist ever did. 😅
Incredible job sticking with it and changing your life!! I wish you many great adventures. Have fun in your ultra. They're an incredible way of adding a little "epic" to your life!
I usually never struggle to find the motivation but on the rare occasions when I really do not feel like going for a run I just tell myself to make do with a short run, or an easy run, and sometimes those runs turn out to be up there amongst my best runs. And even when they are not I feel that the consistency of getting my runs in, even on a bad day, is a lot better than skipping the run and spending the day feeling 'guilty' instead. I run 6 days week and keep Sunday as a rest day, which seems to work really well for me.
I agree, motivation is important, if you're not motivated to run, then why would you run? And I mean in the sense of being motivated to be a runner. That said, day to day I don't think you should rely on motivation because you're not going to be motivated every day. I'm more for setting up my life in a way that makes it easy to get out through the door. Establishing routines and if I run in the morning, I make sure I have everything ready, I select the clothes and shoes I'm going to use the night before and place them so I can easily just grab them. Then if I'm not motivated, I just force myself out through the door based on those routines and with pure discipline, the days when I really, really don't want to, I tell myself I can quit after 10 minutes if I still don't want to, that works wonders for me.
There's this quote that I always think of during hard times, especially during my runs that helps me a lot: "The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart."
I would say consitency and understanding of life: sometimes running goes well and sometimes it doesn't. Trust the process. Lately there has been extremely slow running conditions because all the melting snow so my running has as well felt slow and not so fun. Now after two weeks of not so fun runs I finally had super nice run, oh boy it felt great!
Love this 🙌 Trust the process is what Ive always used in my golf, swing changes can take years to get benefit from and I've accepted that over the years however I can't seem to cross this over into my running. Im newish to running and I really need to adopt this mindset. For some reason it's not so easy.
Nice list. I scored 8 out of 10. The two missing for me were the music and the plan. That said, I'm at 50 years of running and counting. Races mean less for me as I age. I'm now running more and more just for the health of it!
Thanks for the kick in the butt today. Freezing rain, 40mph wind gusts and very tired legs made me want to skip a hard yet important run today. I went out there and gave it my best .. all thanks to you.
Motivation is key. One thing is though that i have seen in people and also in me. Some times just the part where you know you need to find different types of run can cause issues. When you are less motivated or for mor importance have less time to spend the part where you need to choose something unknown you might skip it as well. For some this is the key but not everyone. I like both. But it depends. Some days i just want to go into my dreams and just take an easy run on known territories. And some days i need to think. And some days i need to escape and then i search for new stuff to do :) Motivitation is key. Also the fact of the endorfins you get after is important to remember. You NEVER regret many runs you do. Almost none. BUT you will ALWAYS regret the runs you didnt do :)
I've always just tolerated running. I don't get that good feeling afterwards, I don't get a runner's high. I also can't get emotionally into most music (Video game music does though which is weird). I have to rely on external motivations such as my long term goals to push myself.
Bra video Göran! Jag tränar inför min första halvmara. Känner mig väldigt motiverad. Det verkar som att vi springer på samma ö. Kanske vi råkas i spåret en dag? Ser fram mot din nästa video. 😊
I think shorter term to keep me motivated. "I don't want to run, it's tiring and sometimes painful. That is WHY I run, why I workout, because it's hard, because it's painful. I'm tougher though." Do this because they're a challenge, because they're hard. I don't look towards to feeling after, I know I'll feel good. The feeling if I don't do it though does motivate me, because I'll feel shitty if I don't do it... Unfortunately I got sick last week, probably covid again, and now after five days without running or other exercise I'm really feeling crap, of course part of that is not being completely over whatever I caught.
TH-cam started recommending me your channel after I visited Norway last September (only Oslo but i want to return to visit Tromsø, Bergen, etc). I finally subscribed today!
nice video man, idk if i can do hard runs anymore, i got diagnozed with a heart condition called BER that is commonly found among young athletes, max efforts kinda on hold right now until further investigations 🙏
I agree and disagree. Motivation is definitely good especially when you first start training, but I believe discipline is more important. There are definitely days when I don’t feel motivated at all, but the discipline I have developed from years of running tells me to strap on my shoes and run. It’s not even a question I ask myself anymore, I know I’m going to run every day.
Agree. You cannot and will not be happy to go for a run every single time. Thats where discipline comes in, and discipline in a muscle you can train. And the good thing about training that muscle is that you get better in doing other things you do not like as well. It helps against procrastination, but only if you are mindful about it, I think.
his point is if you want to *improve* you need the motivation. If you're running on discipline and routine only you will put in the mimimum amount of effort to tell yourself that you've done enough for today.
This is exactly a video I needed today. Thank you, Göran. Getting a step closer to my goal is worth the struggle today. After all, if I don't feel up to more, I can cut the run a bit shorter.

This is so true. Short runs for me too.
Motivation and mental health is the key ! You are right, the mind have incredible impact on performances
This is why I subscribed to your channel :) Just the right video......as I am struggling to recover

Legs, you'll never run fast if you don’t have legs 😁
Or stumps plus running blades! I guess as long as you have thighs you're good to go :D
Saw a man with two running blade prosthetics come in at a sub-3 marathon here in Tokyo last week!
Or wheels.
That is discrimination to the non-legged
@@JapanJacquesYep seen that guy as well. Amazing.
I’m so glad I found this channel to motivate and educate myself. No chance I’d be still running after starting just a year ago otherwise
Thanks for that nice comment makes me very happy to hear 😀
Breakcore music while running 🏃♂️ 👌

Har börjat studera till brandman så är nu motiverad till att ta tag ordentligt i min träning 😊🚒🔥🧑🚒
this why i'm so annoyed and upset parkrun have removed the records and stats, they were a big motivation for me.
Finding a sport that I actually enjoy practicing actually removed the need to motivate myself.
What are your thoughts on motivation vs dedication?
Thanks Coach for inspiring video

Where you live is so beautiful, that will be my motivation. 😊
Motivation is great, but creating healthy discipline is more important. Discipline will get you out the door when you don't feel motivated.

Beautiful country💕
It would be intresting with a "behind the scenes" video, where you show how you film and edit your videos :D
Legendary channel! How do you even manage to run with such a massive set of cojones?
Feet?
I love Norway, if I had great socialized healthcare and awesome places to run I bet I would be motivated…
I don't think you would. Has to come from within.

Cool to hear wanted to run that myself but was to late and it got all booked up
I tell you one thing: It's super-irrelevant how fast you can run. Who cares?
