    I usually attend Too many games expo, AVGC expo, and Retro Con in the PA/NJ area. I would say buying multiple things from same vendor will let you get a better overall price. Always bring a backpack so you don't have to unload at car multiple times. Finally, one of the biggest things as you mentioned is be polite/courteous to vendors as well as other guests. Games are supposed to be fun and hunting them down at a show can be win win for everyone.

    the last part with being respectful and good hygiene is really good for going out in public in general. the world would be alot better place if most people did this. Great video as always.

    I have been to two Comic Con conventions a Star Wars conventions in Texas and a 10 year Anniversary for Ever Quest in Las Vegas back in 2009 on the day that Micheal Jackson passed away. Going to these conventions are so much fun. Yeah, i highly recommend bringing cash before you show up to the convention, because the ATM's on site might run out of money or might be none at all. Great tips video John!

    Just to add about hygiene it can also help cut down on illness. If you (general you) have a cold, wash your hands! Use a tissue. Take extra steps to be mindful of the people around you. It sucks to come back from a fun time and be sick. I came back from NCECA once feeling kinda of blah, only to wake up the following day with pink eye. Anyway, great video John. Hoping this weekend I can get to watching your video. Looking forward Portland.

    All good points. The hygiene thing is important though, I walked away from a vendor table right after the con opened because one of the patrons had a tremendous odor that covered a wide radius. I actually met John today and he was a hell of a nice guy!

    The negotiating on prices is my biggest concern every time because the up front cost of even attending an expo forces me to make up for that cost. Oh wow you got a great deal on a game, well not really if you factor ticket cost. Buying enough stuff might overcome this, but again only if you can score good deals below the averages on ebay, stores, etc.

  • @MrVirobot
    @MrVirobot 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haggle with our local game store often. But I've never offered a price that I know would offend the owner because I like the store. I also sometimes take note of stuff that has been collecting dust since the last time I was in and offered to purchase it if it's something I wanted, and haggle a bit.
    Last thing you want to do is piss of your local game store owner if you are a collector.

  • @tambo_matt
    @tambo_matt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    just a extra thought though is seems obvious to some, many vendors prefer cash and will do better deals because they wont have to pay merchant fees etc
    A personal tip is to take a poster tube in a backpack as to make sure those goodies stay undamaged,

    Thanks for the helpful tips John! I've never been to a gaming convention, and I'm pretty bummed that I missed the one in Oaks, PA in June because that's not too far from where I live. Unfortunately I don't personally know too many people who would be interested in shelling out money to attend a convention, but there's always a chance! I will have to get my haggling skills up before I try to strike some deals at one of these events.

    Hey John, thank you for this vid! I attended my first game con last year here in AZ, Game On Expo, and I honestly did not know what to expect. Your tips are great and hope more fellow gamers and vendors watch it.
    The only thing that caught me off guard was the pricing. I was expecting to pay under ebay/amazon prices, but some vendors were going way out of line on price. Would you recommend to haggle off their marked price or actual game value price? Thank you!

    So basically I'm heading up to the So Cal Retro Gaming Convention next month, February 2019. There's gas, there's hotel, there's admission to get in ($80 for 2 tickets for both days). Are there deals that can be had at these conventions that would justify the cost of paying $80 just to get into the building? I can get a lot of games on e-bay with that money. Is is really worth the cost of admission? And this goes for any convention that charges admission. Let me know. Thanks.

    There are dishonest vendors at these shows. Broken games and hardware are not common, but it happens. These vendors are usually obvious if you regularly attend; note the vendors you buy from successfully, for the next show. Also, sometimes you will see a vendor who is just a dude selling his collection...these guys can give the best deal, and sometimes some gems in their collection.
